This conclusion is not good news for me at all. I had previously believed that Wang Xu was determined to hold onto his meager assets, but his firm refusal left me even more confused. What does he really want? Why is he so tightly bound to our broken marriage?
When Miao Miao heard this, she was just as shocked as I was. She stared at me for a long time without saying anything, and when she finally spoke, it was, "What exactly does Wang Xu want?"
"I still don't know, and I can't figure it out."
Now, Wang Xu's attitude has become an unsolved mystery for me.
"What are we going to do now? What do you think he really wants? Does he truly not want the family assets, or does he want you to give him something?" Miao Miao's expression was grim; if there were a mirror, I would probably look just as bad.
"Miao Miao, I really don't know. I thought about it, and if Wang Xu was after money, then he wouldn't have dismissed my words so easily. He outright denied my suggestion and insisted that it's impossible for him to divorce me. Miao Miao, please help me think of any possibilities that I might have overlooked."
Miao Miao nodded gently. "Well, when you mentioned this, it left me confused too. If Wang Xu is so adamant, there must be a reason behind it. Could it be that your mother-in-law has accepted you?"
Miao Miao's speculation made me laugh in disbelief; that was simply impossible. If I were pregnant with Wang Xu's child right now, there might be a slim chance of that happening. But at this moment, how could I believe that my mother-in-law would ever accept me?
I wasn't that naive.
"Hey, I'm just throwing out ideas. With your mother-in-law's stubborn personality, no matter what kind of daughter-in-law she has around her, she's bound to be difficult. Don't worry; let's think about it some more. There must be a way."
"Yeah."
Despite saying that, Miao Miao likely felt just as lost as I did. Even after spending three years by Wang Xu's side, I couldn't figure out his intentions; how could someone less familiar like Miao Miao do so?
Our relationship had become so tense that continuing like this would make it impossible to share a bed peacefully. Just looking at each other's faces would probably remind us of all those unpleasant memories and make us feel sick.
Is it possible that Wang Xu hates me so much that he no longer cares about these things and just wants to drag me into his suffering?
"This thinking took too long and yielded no conclusions," Miao Miao sighed, saying that before experiencing great storms, she really thought she understood everything. But when faced with real issues, she realized she was just a naive young girl, even younger than Deng Xiaomei, who was at a higher level than them.
"People really need to spend a few more years honing their skills in society to gain a complete understanding," Miao Miao sighed lightly.
After what happened with Wang Xu, I shared the same sentiment as Miao Miao. After resigning and staying at home for half a year, aside from household chores, I spent my days idly in front of the computer and television. Time passed without any gains; it felt like I had wasted all of it.
I discussed my desire to continue working with Miao Miao, who was very supportive. "Of course you can! You want to go to Zhang Ju, right? If you’re interested, I can have Wang Nan arrange a meeting in a couple of days. Zhang Ju is easy to talk to. If you stay under him for a while and interact with people in the official ranks, you’ll definitely gain something."
I thought that sounded good. If I could become even half as capable as Miao Miao, it would be progress for me.
I agreed to this plan, and Miao Miao said she would notify me when there were updates. In the days following her departure, I stayed home to keep my mom company and help with some household chores.
While I was cutting onions, my mom suddenly said something that made me pause: "Do you think Wang Xu's attitude about not getting divorced is known by his mother?"
It was just an ordinary remark from my mom, but after I processed it, a thought flashed in my mind that startled me into deep contemplation. My hand holding the knife dropped without being retracted in time, and I felt a sharp pain in my fingertip. Looking down, I saw that I had cut a small gash on my left index finger.
"What are you doing being so careless and cutting your hand? Quickly rinse it under water! I'll get you a Band-Aid. You really are so clumsy," my mom chattered as she left the kitchen.
I obediently held my hand under the faucet, watching the water turn pink as it washed away the blood. It didn't hurt much; it was just my mom's words that lingered in my mind.
My mom quickly returned, dried off the water from my finger, and applied a Band-Aid for me. She leaned down carefully to help me while reminding me, "What were you thinking? You need to focus when cutting vegetables."
"Mom, I was thinking about finding a way out."
"A way out?"
"Well, a way out."
Suddenly, the hope sparked by my mother's words was captured by me; this might be a solution, quite possibly.
After lunch, I called Miao Miao and shared my thoughts with her. Her cheerful voice came through the phone: "Right! How did I not think of it? Wang Xu cares so much about his mother; she must know something."
Exactly, I had overlooked the existence of his mother-in-law. Wang Xu is very obedient to her; he might even let her know his thoughts. Or rather, this idea could involve her participation. Wang Xu is overly cautious, and Deng Xiaomei is too deep-minded. There’s another breakthrough point: the mother-in-law.
I had previously forgotten her value by mistake. If there’s a chance to come up with a plan starting from her, perhaps there’s still hope.
"That's right, but this time we can't act rashly. Last time we suffered because of Deng Xiaomei; we can't just meet with the mother-in-law casually. We also need to think about their possible defenses while we act."
"Yes, last time it was a big mistake due to carelessness. If we are careless again this time, we will really fall into a passive position."
Although this breakthrough is small and may not cause any fatal damage to Wang Xu, it’s better than being completely empty-handed like before. Both Miao Miao and I were excited. After discussing this matter, Miao Miao mentioned that Wang Nan had a gathering with the same people as last time in the afternoon and asked if I wanted to go since I had nothing else to do.
I thought it was a good idea. I was also somewhat interested in what Miao Miao said about Zhang Ju; after all, it’s a job in a government department.
I mentioned my desire to return to work to my mother. She hesitated for a moment and then asked me, "If you can handle it, then go ahead. If you still want to rest, your dad and I support you."
"Yeah, Mom, I really want to work now. I've been idle for so long that I've become useless."
"Alright then, be careful tonight. If you don't come back, call home again."
After saying goodbye to my mother, I went to the café that Miao Miao mentioned to wait for her. She rushed over, ordered a cup of coffee, and said to wait a bit longer since Zhang Ju might still have some matters to attend to before coming over. I agreed.
After waiting for half an hour, Wang Nan called. Miao Miao and I went to the place Wang Nan mentioned, but we still didn't see Zhang Ju. Miao Miao looked around the entire private room and greeted everyone before bringing up Zhang Ju. Wang Nan reassured her, "You still need to wait a bit longer, don't rush."
When Wang Nan said this, he glanced at me, and I could only awkwardly smile back at him, as if he knew something.
Hearing Wang Nan say that, Miao Miao sighed in relief and patted my hand, winking at me.
Lu Ming was also there today, similarly without a female companion. Looking around the room, it seemed that besides me, Lu Ming was the only one alone.
Almost an hour later, Zhang Ju finally arrived, smiling and saying he was tied up with work and couldn't get away. He repeatedly apologized and said he would drink three cups as punishment.
With the main seat filled, a few people chatted for a while until there was a lull in the conversation. Seizing the opportunity, Miao Miao chimed in, "Zhang Ju is so busy; the people below really lack insight. If Zhang Ju had one or two capable assistants like my sisters, it wouldn't cut into his rest time."
Zhang Ju waved his hand, still smiling. The person he brought along was probably a subordinate who awkwardly twitched his mouth at Miao Miao's words.
Miao Miao ignored him and subtly tugged at my sleeve, signaling me to stand up. She then said loudly, "Zhang Ju, my sister wants to toast you."
I stood up, holding the bottom of my cup respectfully and said, "Zhang Ju, I toast you."
Everyone present, including Zhang Ju, were seasoned individuals who understood the underlying meaning of Miao Miao's words. They likely realized she was trying to give Wang Nan face while also testing whether Zhang Ju would take me under his wing to see if Miao Miao was lying.
Zhang Ju smiled and waited for everyone to exchange a few words before clapping his hands and exclaiming, "Haha, if I disagreed with Miao Miao's suggestion, I wouldn't be able to stay here."
That was considered a half-agreement.
Miao Miao continued to echo him: "Zhang Ju, don't doubt it! My sister can definitely help you soar even higher!"
"Alright, alright!"
Zhang Ju has completely agreed. Miao Miao and I took turns having a few drinks with Zhang Ju. The atmosphere was quite good, except for Lu Ming, who had not expressed his opinion on the matter. He participated in other topics and Zhang Ju would listen attentively when he spoke.
Thanks to Miao Miao, I felt happy inside. There was progress regarding the divorce, and I had some stability at work. Perhaps I finally felt at ease, which allowed me to have time to observe Lu Ming.
Just as I glanced over, Lu Ming's hawk-like gaze happened to meet mine. When our eyes locked, I could clearly sense the hint of anger in Lu Ming.
However, when he turned his gaze away and resumed talking to others, his expression returned to normal, wearing a light smile as if nothing had happened.
"Zhuang Jun, what are you staring at so intently?" Miao Miao nudged me with her elbow.
I quickly withdrew my gaze and shook my head. "Nothing, just had a bit too much to drink, feeling dizzy."
"I have some hangover medicine in my bag; you should take some later. What's done is done, just relax."
Yeah, finally I can relax.
