Knowing is one thing, but the difficult path ahead is also a reality. After ending the call with Miao Miao, I collapsed onto my bed, reflecting on everything that had happened today. I went into the bathroom to put away the sanitary napkin, but then I thought about how unnecessary that action would be if Wang Xu saw it again; it might raise his suspicions.
Wang Xu probably wouldn’t listen to me and stay away; he might show up again in a few days, and I couldn’t afford to be careless.
Instead, one morning, my mom suddenly came to me holding a sanitary napkin, shaking me awake. As I groggily opened my eyes, I saw her waving the item in her hand.
“Zhuang Jun, what will you do if Wang Xu sees this in the bathroom?”
I vaguely recognized what my mom was holding and noticed her anxious expression, which warmed my heart.
It was comforting that she was starting to support me and think about my plans, not rejecting everything I had done. She was genuinely considering my situation.
“Mom, don’t worry. I’ve already explained everything.”
I recounted what she hadn’t heard that day, and my mom sighed in relief, murmuring softly, “That’s good. That’s good. If Wang Xu and your mother-in-law find out the truth, it could be serious. You need to think this through.”
“Mom, I’ve thought it through. I’ve been clear about this for a while now. Please don’t worry about me; I’ll handle it well.”
I reassured her like this, but deep down, I didn’t feel as confident. I was walking on thin ice; one misstep could lead to trouble.
To be safe, I asked Miao Miao about her break time and arranged for her to come over when she had some free time. This way, if Wang Xu saw Miao Miao, it would help support the lies I had told earlier.
Miao Miao agreed readily. The day she came over happened to be when Wang Xu also showed up. As expected, no matter how Wang Xu changed, he could still guess some of the steps he might take. When he arrived and saw Miao Miao moving freely around the house, his expression shifted; he cheerfully greeted Miao Miao first.
Miao Miao gave him a disdainful glance and casually walked into the living room, sitting on the sofa and picking up an apple to eat with ease. Compared to Miao Miao’s relaxed demeanor, Wang Xu appeared much more awkward as he rubbed his hands together and chuckled nervously.
“I wasn’t planning on coming over, but Mom insisted I check on you to see if you needed anything. If you’re missing something, since my parents are getting older and can’t go out easily, I can run errands.”
Upon hearing this, Miao Miao perked up and smiled brightly: “So you’re here as a gopher? That’s great! I want to eat abalone and shark fin; just get whatever is expensive! I've been so busy lately that my skin has gotten worse; I need something to nourish it.”
After listening to Miao Miao, Wang Xu twitched the corner of his mouth and looked at me with hope, waiting for my response.
"Didn't you hear?" I tilted my chin in Miao Miao's direction.
"What?" Wang Xu looked a bit confused.
"Weren't you told what to buy? Go on, if you don't get it, don't come back," I made a gesture to send him off, and Wang Xu seemed a bit anxious.
"No, I came over mainly to ask what you wanted to buy. I'm not asking anyone else. If you need anything, I'll go get it so you can recover well."
"Abalone and shark fin, that's what I want. I want all kinds of delicacies. Did you hear that? If you did, just go," I said while sitting next to Miao Miao and picking up the apple flesh she had peeled for me.
Miao Miao spoke loudly, "Some people just talk without acting. Now that we're adults, of course we can talk and make things happen, but people should be more sincere. If you can't do it, then don't say it. Yet they still act all open and generous; it's really nauseating."
Miao Miao's words were pointed, and Wang Xu could tell. He leaned closer to me with a dark expression, "Alright, I'll go find it for you. But the things you're asking for aren't easy to get. What else do you want? I'll buy everything together."
"Let's wait and see; I'll call you if I think of anything else," I continued eating the apple that Miao Miao handed me, speaking vaguely.
Wang Xu really stood up and walked outside. After he closed the door, Miao Miao chuckled.
"Look at Wang Xu; he puts on an act like he's being humble. When he saw me a while ago, he still knew how to call out to me. Now he doesn't anymore; he knows how to keep his tail tucked in. Just look at him."
Miao Miao spoke while eating the apple, her words also vague, but I understood her meaning clearly; my thoughts were not much different from hers.
After a while, Wang Xu returned with bags in hand and set them down. He was still smiling as he leaned closer to me. Before he could sit down, I suddenly said, "Isn't there a place on South Road that sells crystal buns? They're really delicious. Just thinking about them makes me hungry. Go buy me a portion, Wang Xu; I really want to eat them."
"Right! I know that place too. Hurry up and go, Wang Xu! If you're late, they'll sell out! What are you waiting for? Go quickly!" Miao Miao chimed in to urge him.
Wang Xu was still standing stiffly without sitting down when both Miao Miao and I pushed him out the door with our words.
After running back and forth a couple of times, Wang Xu, panting, placed the items he was carrying on the coffee table in front of me. Before I could say anything, he hesitantly said, "Wife, just tell me everything you need at once. Running back and forth like this is quite a waste of time."
Of course, it was a waste of time; that was the point. I silently admitted it in my heart but pretended to be surprised. "Really? You're right; how could I only think about making you run around? It must be tough for you. It's all my fault; I accidentally took myself too seriously."
"No, that's not true. Wife, I'm more than willing to run for you. Just tell me what else you want to eat, and I'll buy it for you. Don't hold back; you know that's not what I meant," he replied.
"Alright then, Wang Xu, bring me something else," Miao Miao interjected from the side.
Wang Xu looked slightly displeased. "What does this have to do with you? I'm helping Zhuang Jun; why are you butting in?"
I immediately stopped him. "Wang Xu, how can you talk like that? Miao Miao came over to take care of me because she knows I'm pregnant. What have you been doing during this time? If Miao Miao wants something to eat, just ask if you're bringing it or not."
Wang Xu frowned with a pained expression while Miao Miao sighed deeply. "Sigh, forget it. Some people clearly don't take this matter to heart and obviously don't know what gratitude is. Whatever, Zhuang Jun, just learn from experience and don't expect too much from anyone; otherwise, you'll end up disappointed."
I nodded continuously at her words while Wang Xu grabbed my arm and pulled me away from Miao Miao, lowering his voice to argue, "Don't listen to her nonsense. How could I not care about you? If I didn't care about you, would I have quit my job? If I didn't care about you, would I be running over here every few days? You know me better than that."
"Hmph." Miao Miao shot him a sideways glance and sneered, "Wang Xu, speak honestly. Stop lying through your teeth. At your age, it's embarrassing how easily you lie without even blushing."
"What am I lying about? You need to clarify that! I'm here taking care of Zhuang Jun and not listening to your gossip. If you've got something to say, say it at home! Are you so desperate for a man that you're coming here to ruin someone else's family? Zhuang Jun has been nice to you; look at what you're doing now—standing here trying to break up someone else's family!"
"Wang Xu!" I stepped in front of him and glared. "Stop talking nonsense or get out of here; you're just an eyesore."
"Zhuang Jun, isn't he the one being an eyesore? Look at him; is he really here to take care of you? I think he doesn't believe you're pregnant at all or he's definitely thinking whether your child belongs to someone else!"
Miao Miao's words were shocking, and Wang Xu's face turned pale instantly. He nervously glanced between me and Miao Miao before whispering angrily, "Don't talk nonsense!"
"Nonsense? Just look! Zhuang Jun, look quickly—Wang Xu's face has changed! He's guilty as charged! He must be doubting you! No matter what he's doubting about you, he clearly doesn't believe it! Zhuang Jun, why haven't you taken Wang Xu to the hospital for a check-up in front of him yet? When the time is right, go do a paternity test! Oh wait—he probably thinks you're not even pregnant! Don't let Wang Xu worry all day long; it's too much stress for him."
Miao Miao elongated her tone at the end of her statement while Wang Xu's face flushed red with anger as he gasped for breath in rebuttal. "Are you going to keep talking nonsense?"
I saw that Wang Xu was already angry, so I immediately pulled at his sleeve and shouted, "What are you getting angry about? If Miao Miao is wrong, why are you in such a hurry? Are you feeling guilty? You just want to take me to the hospital, right? Fine, let's go now. This way you can relax and get a good night's sleep!"
As Miao Miao and I exchanged words like this, Wang Xu became flustered. He hurriedly said many things to appease me, insisting that he had no ulterior motives and was only there to take care of my health, with no other intentions. Whether or not we went to the hospital was entirely up to me.
"Wang Xu, let me tell you, Miao Miao often comes to accompany me to the hospital and takes care of me with great thoughtfulness. If you say anything bad about Miao Miao again, then I have something to discuss with you."
"Okay, okay, I won't say anything more. I'm just anxious because I'm going to be a dad! I'm excited! Please don't casually talk about not wanting the baby or anything like that; I can't handle it. Moreover, my mom would be upset too. Besides, my parents definitely want a grandchild. I might be a bit too anxious. I promise you that I won't interfere with anything from now on, okay? Please don't be angry."
Seeing that Wang Xu was genuinely swearing an oath, I finally eased up and let him leave first. Wang Xu looked reluctant but still left. After he walked away for a while, I took a moment to calm down and exchanged a glance with Miao Miao.
"Do you think Wang Xu fell for it? He probably won't try to test you for a while now. We should still keep an eye on him. Since he cares so much about the child, he shouldn't be thinking too much about it, right?"
"I... I don't know."
I felt dejected because I often couldn't gauge Wang Xu's emotions accurately. Based on what I knew about him and Miao Miao's plan to lay all his worries bare and make him panic a bit.
But whether we succeeded or not remained uncertain.
