Due to the alcohol, I only slept for a few hours. When I woke up, I estimated that the noise had disturbed Miao Miao, who was lying on the big bed, squinting at me. "What time is it, Zhuang Jun? Why are you up?"
As I was putting on my makeup, I explained, "I have to go to work now. You can sleep a bit more. Call me when you’ve had enough rest around noon."
By this point, I had quickly changed my shoes and heard Miao Miao's sleepy voice mumbling, "So early? Aren't you tired?"
I shook my head and replied naturally, "Not tired."
It wasn't that I wasn't tired; it was that I knew my sleep was so light that I often couldn't fall asleep, and my temper was particularly bad.
"Have you seen Gu Xiang? What did he say?"
"I saw him. He said I'm suffering from nervous exhaustion and prescribed some medication."
I left the hotel while managing my curly hair. It wasn't yet time to officially start work, and there were only a few pedestrians on the street; it was quite quiet.
I took the nearly empty subway to Luming Company, hurriedly running three steps at a time. Fortunately, I arrived right on time and wasn’t late.
Breathless, I sat down next to Dong Lu, who scrutinized me closely.
Her purposeful gaze didn’t leave me, and I suppressed my irritation, turning my face to force a smile. "Sister Lu, I'm working overtime today and tomorrow as well."
Dong Lu raised an eyebrow and withdrew her gaze. Regardless of what she was thinking at that moment, I couldn’t be bothered; as long as she turned her annoying face away, that was enough.
Another busy day began. During a meeting midway through, it was mentioned that there had been new developments in the business with President Kang. When Lu Ming spoke about this, there was no look of surprise on his face; it seemed like just another ordinary matter to him, as it had been that day.
Lu Ming said that such high-intensity work couldn't last much longer. In about a week, he would start a month-long paid vacation. This news stirred up excitement, and even though I was about to leave, I couldn't help but be influenced by the emotions of those around me.
At noon, Miao Miao returned to the company to find me, looking vibrant with her sunglasses on as she walked straight to my side. She asked why I wasn't off work yet. I awkwardly glanced at her and replied, "I still have to wait a bit longer; you can sit and wait for me."
"That's not acceptable," Miao Miao firmly rejected. Behind her sunglasses, I couldn't tell if she was looking at me or at Dong Lu beside me. "I'm going to talk to Lu Ming about this; how can they exploit labor like this?"
After saying that, Miao Miao strutted toward Lu Ming's office, and the people around us looked on sympathetically. I knew Miao Miao wanted to stand up for me with Lu Ming, and seeing her act this way made me quite happy.
Before long, Miao Miao came out of Lu Ming's office, reaching for my bag on the table. "Let's go eat; I'm starving."
I almost wanted to kneel and call her "my lady," but fearing it might not be well-received, I just followed her with a playful attitude as we walked out.
As soon as we stepped out of the company, I started getting excited. "Miao Miao, you were amazing! You should have seen Dong Lu's face; it must have made her furious, haha."
Miao Miao smiled back. "If she can bully you like that, then she needs to be reminded of her place. Just think of yourself as part of a kingdom; even if you lose against her, you won't lose anything. Be brave."
While we were having lunch together, Miao Miao's phone kept vibrating non-stop. She neither answered nor turned it off, letting call after call come in.
I knew who was calling; Miao Miao surely did too. She had her reasons for not answering, and I didn't want to interfere. However, seeing her pretend to be indifferent made me uncomfortable. Unable to hold back, I quietly asked her, "Miao Miao, are you okay? Aren't you going to answer that call?"
Miao Miao took a bite of her vegetable salad with a fork and after chewing and swallowing it slowly picked up her cup of red tea. "They're coming anyway; what's the point in answering?"
I was still caught up in what Miao Miao said when I suddenly saw Wang Nan running over breathlessly. Looking at Miao Miao's calm demeanor made me wonder if she had already anticipated this situation.
When Wang Nan approached, he nodded slightly as a greeting. I politely returned the gesture and shifted a bit inward to make space for him, but Wang Nan did not sit down.
"Miao Miao."
Wang Nan bent slightly at the waist, standing next to Miao Miao. He looked as usual but appeared somewhat fatigued, with a stubble of dark hair on his chin and bloodshot eyes.
Miao Miao seemed oblivious to Wang Nan's presence, continuing to shove food into her mouth. Before Wang Nan arrived, she hadn't shown such hunger; now she looked like she hadn't eaten in a long time, her stomach growling.
"Miao Miao."
Wang Nan called out again in a lowered voice, but Miao Miao still ignored him. I felt a bit anxious watching this unfold and quietly urged Wang Nan to sit down first to avoid drawing more attention.
Wang Nan had no choice but to sit beside me. Facing Miao Miao, he reached out to grab her hand, but she subtly pulled away. Watching this back-and-forth made my heart ache; it reminded me so much of the time between me and Wang Xu, just like it was now.
At the most critical moment, one could only move forward while the other had to retreat.
"Miao Miao, don’t you have anything to say to me?"
Miao Miao wiped her mouth with a tissue and smiled with squinted eyes: "Wang Nan, I've made my feelings very clear. From now on, you go your way and I'll go mine. We have no marriage ties, so why complicate things? It's over; what's the point of this?"
Wang Nan seemed to gradually calm down. He said seriously: "Mu Miaomiao, I didn't realize you could be so ruthless."
"Wang Nan, is it me who's ruthless or you who's naive? What do you think bringing me home to meet your parents would accomplish? You enjoy seeing them belittle me in front of you? How old are you that you still can't see your parents have no intention of accepting me? Wake up! Just because we like each other doesn't mean anything; don't waste my time."
"Miao Miao, I genuinely thought they wanted me to bring you home for the New Year because they accepted you. I've been saying good things about you to them for years; their agreement was just a matter of time. Can breaking up really solve anything?"
"Breaking up can certainly solve problems. Aren't you talking nonsense? If we're not together, you can be with that Harvard woman. Your parents will be happy, the Harvard woman will be happy, and I can easily find a place that accepts me. How is that not solving the problem? Why don't you explain that to me?"
"And what about me? Miao Miao, have you ever thought about my feelings? Did you ever care about me during our relationship?"
"Me? Wang Nan, are you asking me?" Miao Miao laughed in anger. "No, really not. How could I think about you? I've only been thinking about myself. I, Mu Miaomiao, climbed up to your family’s high branch; I have to curry favor with you. My ultimate goal has always been for myself. Don't dream that I genuinely care about you; go back home and indulge in your fantasies. Maybe the Harvard woman actually cares about you."
Miao Miao waved her hand dismissively.
Lying. I knew very well that Miao Miao was lying. She seemed heartless as she hurt Wang Nan, but deep down, she felt wronged and distressed. She was just strong-willed and didn't want anyone to see her vulnerable side. In reality, Miao Miao cared more than anyone else.
"I knew it, Mu Miaomiao, you're heartless." Wang Nan sneered coldly and stood up to leave.
I grabbed Wang Nan's arm and wouldn't let go. Wang Nan looked down at me while Miao Miao casually said, "Let her go, Zhuang Jun. Otherwise, people might think you're keeping her here to pay the bill. Don't scare her."
I could see that Wang Nan was even angrier now and desperately shook his head to explain, "It's not like that, Wang Nan! After being with Miao Miao for so long, don't you understand what kind of person she is? Can't you tell whether she's saying this for you or for herself? You really can't figure it out?"
"Zhuang Jun, shut up!" I barely finished speaking when Miao Miao let out a low hiss to stop my interference.
I knew that Miao Miao cared about her pride, so I could only hint at it without going further. Right now, Wang Nan was upset; it was understandable that he couldn't think clearly. But I was afraid that after their impulsive actions, they would start regretting it—the ones getting hurt would be themselves.
Wang Nan seemed contemplative, but Miao Miao issued the final dismissal. After Wang Nan gave me a grateful glance, he still left. I noticed Miao Miao's shoulders shaking and knew she was feeling upset again.
"Miao Miao, why do this? Wang Nan has already lowered his head to admit his mistakes."
"It's useless, Zhuang Jun. You don’t understand; it really is useless. What good does it do if Wang Nan likes me? Can he withstand the pressure from his family? Long pain is worse than short pain; afterward, Wang Nan will probably thank me for this act of letting go."
Miao Miao pretended to be relaxed, and no matter how much I tried to persuade her, there was no change. I knew she didn't dislike Wang Nan; perhaps she just didn't know when she would be able to move past this pain. But as she said, enduring a long pain is worse than a short one.
The most important factor wasn't Wang Nan's attitude, but rather the decision made by Wang Nan's parents. I didn't want to say much more about it.
I returned to the company with Miao Miao. She said that since she was bored, she would stay at my company for a while to keep me company. I was quite happy about it, but Dong Lu had some objections. Half-jokingly, she told me that although there were no rules against it, it seemed inappropriate to bring someone along to work.
Miao Miao was already upset and couldn't care less about Dong Lu's cold remarks. She laughed and said loudly, "I didn't know there was such a rule, but what can I do? I can't help it if I'm friends with the Boss. Just wait for me."
Miao Miao stood up and headed straight for Lu Ming's office. When she came out, Lu Ming followed her, which made Dong Lu's expression worsen.
“Lu Ming, this company is so big; does it matter if I, Mu Miaomiao, sit on a stool? I'm not peeking at your company's confidential documents or planning to stay here forever. I'm just keeping my sister company. Is there a problem with that?”
Lu Ming's agreement probably put Dong Lu in a difficult position. She stood up abruptly, her voice trembling: “Lu Zong, I want to say that while the company doesn't have explicit rules, everyone has been following the unwritten ones. If we let one or two people set a bad example, what happens when someone leaves? Who will clean up the mess left behind?”
“What? Are you saying your company is a mess?” Miao Miao seized on Dong Lu's words and suddenly asked.
