My mother-in-law still comes to see me every few days, but she never mentions the house or the incident with Wang Xu. It's clear that her concern isn't out of newfound conscience; rather, she is worried about the impact on her unborn grandchild.
I take this opportunity to casually mention that I'm having some issues with my pregnancy. My mother-in-law looks alarmed: "What’s wrong, Zhuang Jun? Tell me where it hurts. You're making me anxious."
I think to myself, isn't this exactly what I want? I place my hand on the back of her hand.
"The doctor just said it's unstable, but you know how it is—doctors these days love to prescribe medications just to earn commissions. I'm really afraid of taking their drugs. Not only would I be wasting money, but it could also delay things. If they were truly effective, I wouldn't have waited until now to get pregnant. Mom, you know me; I've worked hard to conceive this child. How can I just choose any treatment?"
Her eyes widen as she ponders my words: "Yes, that's not right. We should wait and think of a better plan."
"Ah." I quickly glance at her worried expression. "I was born in the wrong era. If only I could find a good doctor like you did."
She slaps her thigh: "Exactly! Dr. Li would be perfect. Zhuang Jun, should we go back and see Dr. Li?"
I shake my head: "Dr. Li is too far away; I can't manage that right now. Besides, my relatives back home have never liked me much, so I won’t go."
My mother-in-law looks troubled: "Alright, we won't go for now. I'll keep looking for options, but you must take care of yourself!"
"Yes. I'll do my best to take care of myself."
Her concern deepens at my words; I can tell she's genuinely worried about this matter, so all I can do is wait.
Miao Miao reassures me that she will arrange for Brother Sheng to gradually approach my mother-in-law.
I have my doubts about Brother Sheng as well, so I asked Miao Miao about it. She sighed and said, "Do you think I'm not aware? But this gradual approach has a high chance of failure for most people; it requires someone who is smooth and experienced in dealing with others. If he becomes too smooth, there will be other issues—like now, where I'm worried he might betray us. But it should be fine; if we offer him enough benefits to keep him quiet, it would be strange if he spoke up."
Since Miao Miao said that, I'll just wait and see how things unfold.
Sure enough, after just a couple of days, my mother-in-law's resentment began to dissipate a little. Mysteriously, she told me that she had found a miraculous doctor whose medical skills were said to be heavenly, and many people knew about him.
Feigning surprise, I asked her where this doctor came from.
The background of Brother Sheng that my mother-in-law mentioned did exist, but he had already retreated from the world and was no longer practicing; it was merely a case of misattribution to Brother Sheng.
Of course, my mother-in-law was unaware of this. When she mysteriously revealed the name, I pretended to think hard and said, "Mother-in-law, I feel like I've heard this name somewhere before, but I'm not sure if I remembered it correctly."
"That's him! It must be him! Everyone around here who has had children basically knows about him. But he stopped practicing long ago. Many people want to consult him but can't get an appointment. If I hadn't happened to meet him once by chance, who knows what we would do now."
"How did you meet him? What a coincidence! Please tell me more; I'm quite curious."
My mother-in-law smiled at me and said, "That time I was on the bus and happened to see a woman get on. She looked about your age and didn't seem to be pregnant at all. Then that miraculous doctor stood up and offered her his seat, reminding her to take care of her baby. Isn't that amazing?"
I chuckled in response, "Of course! Just hearing about it feels unbelievable."
"Exactly! The pregnant woman was so excited and kept asking him how he knew. When the doctor mentioned his name, she immediately got even more excited and said she had heard about him for a long time and wanted to meet him; it was harder than climbing to the sky!"
"And then?" I feigned interest, pretending to be eager for more details, which made my mother-in-law even more animated in her storytelling.
As if she had discovered a great secret, she continued: "Then the pregnant woman started asking all sorts of questions. I listened closely; some of her symptoms were similar to yours—unsteady pregnancy. The doctor explained a lot to her, and the pregnant woman kept thanking him, saying she wanted to show her gratitude. The doctor didn’t act high and mighty at all; he just told her to take good care of herself!"
Seeing my mother-in-law with a grin that seemed unable to close, I immediately put on a thoughtful expression: "But mother-in-law, don’t you think it could be a scam? What if that pregnant woman followed your miraculous doctor’s advice and ended up being cheated out of a lot of money? Wouldn't that be just like going to a hospital?"
By steering the conversation towards Brother Sheng potentially scamming people, I noticed my mother-in-law's mood shifted slightly.
"Where did you hear that? The divine doctor never said he would help the pregnant woman with medicine; he only mentioned a few precautions. He wouldn't even agree to the pregnant woman's requests. I think it's because he's encountered too many suspicious people like you that he refuses to help now."
Due to this suspicion, my mother-in-law's attitude towards me was not very favorable. Although she tried to suppress it, her words still conveyed that sentiment.
I quickly softened my tone: "Mother-in-law, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have been so suspicious. But whenever this topic comes up, I instinctively think it's a scam for money. As long as it isn't, that's fine. But you also said that the pregnant woman didn't get what she wanted despite her pleas. Did you manage to succeed?"
I pretended to worship her.
My mother-in-law sighed, "Well, I haven't succeeded yet, but I have the divine doctor's phone number. It was hard to get! Just give it a few more days, and I will definitely have him check on you and prescribe some medicine! Don't worry!"
What she didn't know was that I had always been at ease about this matter; after all, it would eventually succeed. I whispered a few encouraging words in her ear to make her believe that her efforts would soon bear fruit.
I found her enthusiasm amusing.
When I called Miao Miao to share the news, I could hear her scoffing at my mother-in-law.
"She's really foolish. At her age, she's still so stubborn. To think she once forced you to drink fertility potion makes me sick. What era are we in? She's so feudal and backward. But if she were a bit smarter, we would have a harder time."
"Yeah, I don't know whether to laugh or cry about having such a mother-in-law. I used to take care of her feelings so well. Looking back, how could I have demeaned myself like that?"
"Haha, Zhuang Jun, you were just blinded by emotions. Just wake up; everything will be fine."
Will everything really be fine? I can only hope so.
My mother-in-law was even more proactive than I had imagined. Through the messages relayed by Miao Miao, it seemed she went through great lengths to find the so-called divine doctor—she practically cried, threw tantrums, and even threatened to hang herself until Brother Wang came to check on my situation.
I asked Miao Miao, if my mother-in-law told Wang Xu about this, wouldn't Wang Xu easily see through it?
Miao Miao said the possibility was low. Wang Xu was already overwhelmed, and my mother-in-law wasn't concerned about whether Wang Xu knew or not. Wang Xu was definitely in a state of agitation right now; how much of what my mother-in-law said could he even take in? If my mother-in-law understood this, she would surely choose not to say anything.
I found Miao Miao's analysis reasonable, so I waited at home for my mother-in-law to come back and share her so-called good news. I believed it wouldn't be long before that moment arrived, after all, the control of time had always been in my hands, as long as nothing unexpected happened.
Sure enough, when my mother-in-law came to find me again, her eyes were almost filled with tears, and she was so excited that she didn't know which sentence to start with, flustered and at a loss. I comforted her, telling her to take her time and calm down first.
"Now is not the time to be calm! Zhuang Jun, you don't know, we have hope now!"
My mother-in-law was extremely excited. I observed her coldly; when she looked at me, I pretended to be curious: "What happened, Mother? Hurry up and tell me; I'm really curious."
Without taking a breath, my mother-in-law immediately replied, "Remember the miraculous doctor I told you about? Do you know? I actually invited him today!"
My mother-in-law was all smiles, and I feigned happiness in response while coldly answering her in my heart.
How could I not know? What I've been thinking about is precisely the arrival of today. Today brings both your sorrow and my joy; you just don't realize it.
I want to see now who will be laughing until the end from this point forward—me, Zhuang Jun, or you few indifferent people who treat my feelings as nothing!
