"I need to clarify something first. Normally, this person is quite reliable and wouldn't let me down. I'm not sure if something went wrong, but I feel like something is off."
"Yeah, it seems like he has a strong sense of self. At this point, it's too late to change anything." I was a bit worried, and the more I worried, the more anxious I became.
"It's fine. Just pretend to be taking the medication. Act like it's effective at first, and once I find out what's going on, we'll see how to proceed. One step at a time." Miao Miao was relatively calm and rational.
"Okay. Let's continue like this for now; after all, it might just be a misunderstanding." At this point, I could only force a smile to comfort myself. Nothing must go wrong; it absolutely cannot.
My grandmother often asked me how I was feeling, checking in every few hours. I could only awkwardly say that I was taking traditional Chinese medicine. Even if I were on Western medicine, it wouldn't work this quickly, right? She seemed slightly displeased but didn't press further.
I took the initiative to ask about Wang Xu's situation, and my grandmother was very pleased. She said Wang Xu was mostly fine but still stubbornly wanted to find someone. As she spoke, she watched my expression. When she saw that I wasn't stopping her, she slowly put away her hopeful gaze. She continued to boast that she hadn't told Wang Xu about this matter. Her mentioning it made me a bit wary, especially considering Brother Sheng's instability. I could only pretend to ask my grandmother why.
"Well, you know Wang Xu's temper. He can't even take care of himself right now. If I tell him about this, he'll definitely get upset with me—talking about science or whatever. All I know is that whatever can help my grandson is good enough. Wang Xu really... he reads so many books but doesn't seem to have that awareness."
I praised her for her high awareness! She truly saved me a lot of trouble as she claimed. Seeing my agreement, my grandmother beamed with joy and said she would find another expert to give her grandson a good name. She had discovered a naming expert in the suburbs and told me to wait a few days for a surprise, as if encountering a grandmother like her was the greatest luck.
After saying goodbye to my grandmother outside, I took a bus home, worried that if she visited too often, my parents would notice and feel uncomfortable. However, when I got home, my mother was sitting in the living room examining the traditional Chinese medicine I had brought back from my grandmother.
I hurried over excitedly: "Mom, why are you messing with my things?"
My mother turned around after hearing my voice and explained, "I was tidying up your room. This medicine has such a strong smell that I could smell it as soon as I opened the wardrobe. What is this? Why did you put it in there?"
I realized I had overreacted and quickly corrected myself: "This is medicine for Miao Miao; it's not mine."
Although my mother wasn't as perceptive as my dad, she knew I was lying. She was displeased with my deception: "If this is for Miao Miao, then why didn't you give it to her when you went out? Why keep it in the wardrobe? Tell me the truth—what is this? Are you trying to deceive me too?"
My mother was clearly angry; her expression had turned serious. She rarely interfered in my matters or got angry. Now that she was acting this way, I felt anxious and didn't know how to convince her or myself.
"Mom, it's really not anything serious; it's complicated and hard to explain. Just trust me—I absolutely didn't mean to deceive you guys. You know I've really been wanting to divorce Wang Xu; this is something crucial with no other meaning behind it. Mom, please just go along with what I'm saying—don't ask or tell Dad about it, okay?"
I kept explaining to my mother repeatedly; her expression softened a bit. I knew that whatever she did came from caring for me; her intentions were always for my sake. All I could do was explain over and over until she felt reassured.
It was not easy to convince my mom not to tell my dad about this matter. Finally, I understood one thing: my inner tension eased a bit. The medicine in my hand felt like a hot potato; I couldn't throw it away or keep it, so I decided to just put it in the wardrobe—out of sight, out of mind.
In the afternoon, Miao Miao rushed to find me, saying there was something urgent that required us to meet and talk. From her tone, I guessed it wasn't good news, and I felt anxious. Every second waiting for her felt like torture, and I wondered what was going on.
When Miao Miao arrived, she immediately got to the point: "This is really my fault. If I had been a bit more cautious, we wouldn't be in this situation. Brother Sheng is not an ordinary person; he is here specifically to deal with you and me!"
Even though I had suspected it, hearing Miao Miao say it made my heart sink. I found her description strange: "What do you mean? Are you saying it's about both of us?"
Miao Miao nodded heavily: "Yes, it's about you and me. The person who introduced me thought he was just a friend of Wang Nan's, so I didn't think much of it. But little did I know he was sent here to mess with us. It makes me so angry!"
Miao Miao clenched her fists, and when she mentioned that person, she looked like she wanted to tear him apart.
"Who?" I asked curiously, but deep down, I already had an idea.
"Wang Yue."
When Miao Miao said this name, I was shocked—not because Wang Yue sent someone after us, but because I was astonished at how much hatred she must have for both me and Miao Miao. Why would she go to such lengths?
"Do you know how infuriating this woman is? She somehow found out we were busy with this matter and actually sent someone to tell me that Brother Sheng is a good option. If I had known Brother Sheng was arranged by her, there’s no way I would have considered him!"
Miao Miao's frustration stemmed from her trust in the wrong person. I understood how devastating this blow was for her and knew she wasn't at fault; sometimes things just slip through the cracks. I didn't blame her at all; instead, I lamented how twisted my fate seemed.
"Wang Yue must have some purpose behind this. What does she want? If we can satisfy her demands first, we can handle our side later."
Miao Miao nodded: "That's what I thought too. So I went to find Wang Yue to clarify things. Guess what she said? She claimed she didn't need anything from us; whatever we have, she doesn't lack for anything. Why would she need anything from us? You have no idea—I almost couldn't hold back from cursing her out when she said that! Is there anyone who talks like that? It's truly outrageous."
From Miao Miao's recounting of the conversation, I could sense her dissatisfaction. I knew she must be feeling upset; I'd feel the same way if I were in her shoes.
Miao Miao continued: "I held back though; after all, we need something from her. I've been through situations like this before—gritting my teeth and getting through it is all that's needed. There's no point in arguing with her. But then she jumped straight to conclusions, saying she had no other intentions but wanted us to fail at what we were trying to do—just that simple."
It's that simple.
These few words are terrifyingly simple, and I can imagine the smug expression on Wang Yue's face at that moment.
"I think she did it on purpose, deliberately letting us discover her tricks." My conclusion wasn't just a casual remark; I had a strong feeling about it.
"Yeah, I guess so," Miao Miao agreed with me. "She must be enjoying the fact that we need her. She has no idea how proud she is!"
Miao Miao said this through gritted teeth. Although I was also flustered, I was curious about her anger and asked, "What exactly happened between you and Wang Yue? She probably dislikes me because of Lu Ming, but why does she treat you this way?"
Miao Miao has always been good at socializing; if there wasn't something serious, she wouldn't have let things get so tense with Wang Yue.
Miao Miao replied calmly, her expression filled with disdain. "That's right. She doesn't like you because of a man, and she doesn't like me for the same reason."
I was shocked. "Are you saying…"
"Yeah, because of Wang Nan. Just as much as she likes Lu Ming now, she liked Wang Nan back then."
It's terrifying; I never thought this woman could go crazy over a man like that. But thinking it through, it makes sense—she holds grudges against both me and Miao Miao. However, realizing Wang Yue's motives doesn't change anything; in the end, she won't let us off the hook.
"Such a woman is truly frightening," I couldn't help but exclaim. This situation is really tricky.
Wang Yue definitely won't let Miao Miao and me off the hook. If Miao Miao were still with Wang Nan, she would definitely seek him out to resolve this issue. But I know Miao Miao well enough; she's decided to cut ties with Wang Nan completely and doesn't want to have any further involvement with him.
Wang Yue must know Miao Miao's temperament and is blocking us from finding a solution.
Of course, I wouldn't let Miao Miao go against her own choices for my sake, so I decided to handle it myself.
"It's fine, I'll take care of it. Everything will be okay."
Miao Miao was shocked: "How are you going to solve this? Don't act recklessly, Zhuang Jun."
I knew this person was found by Miao Miao. She must be feeling guilty, and I didn't want her to worry about my situation. To put it simply, there is a way to handle this, but it would be difficult for both me and Miao Miao.
"Are you...?" Miao Miao looked at me suspiciously.
I nodded: "At this point, giving up is not an option. Although it's tough, I'm willing to try. It's okay, I've made up my mind, so don't try to persuade me."
Miao Miao hesitated: "I know you've never liked Lu Ming. If you don't want to, I can go find Wang Nan..."
Before Miao Miao could finish, I interrupted her: "Let me go talk to Lu Ming. You said she likes Lu Ming now, so he should be more effective than Wang Nan. Just don't try to change my mind; I'm prepared for this. Lu Ming won't bite. If I fail, then you can go find Wang Nan."
It sounded like I was sure to succeed, but Lu Ming wasn't someone who would just do what he was told. I couldn't guarantee that I could convince him; I just had to give it a try. I pushed aside any previous conflicts; the most important thing was to get a divorce first!
"Alright, if you're willing to accept it, then give it a shot. Don't push yourself too hard; there are definitely other ways to handle this. If it becomes too difficult, just wait and see."
I knew that since Wang Yue had said this, she wouldn't just give up easily. If it weren't for either Wang Nan or Lu Ming, she probably wouldn't back down at all.
I prepared myself mentally and placed my only hope on Lu Ming.
