Wang Xu asked me to discuss the divorce, and he didn't come alone.
When I arrived, I immediately spotted my mother-in-law sitting next to Wang Xu. She still had that face that seemed to be bought with a lot of money, and overall, she looked a bit worn out compared to before.
I noticed that Wang Xu not only came prepared but seemed to have something else in mind. His gaze wandered around the entire restaurant, and his palms rubbed nervously on his knees, clearly showing signs of anxiety.
It felt like he was ready to go on stage to accept an award. My heart sank as I decided to keep a neutral expression and approach them. Given my limited understanding of Wang Xu, I sensed something was off.
Finally, I mustered the courage to walk toward Wang Xu. Under their intense gazes, I sat down across from them. The waiter handed me a glass of water and asked if I wanted anything else; I casually ordered a lemonade.
Wang Xu called my name, but I didn’t react much. He glanced at his mother, who shot him a glare, and then he said, “Zhuang Jun, how have you been lately? You know why I asked you out today; it’s to discuss the divorce.”
After stumbling through his words, Wang Xu finally finished. I wanted to respond immediately; of course, I knew about it and had been waiting for this day for a long time.
“This is a draft of the divorce agreement prepared by the lawyer my mother and I found. Take a look; if it’s acceptable, we can proceed with the necessary paperwork.”
As he spoke hesitantly, I flipped through the contents of the divorce agreement and suddenly understood why Wang Xu looked so guilty!
His conscience must have been eaten by dogs!
“Wang Xu, what do you mean? You want me to voluntarily give up the house?” I pointed at the contents of the divorce agreement on the table, feeling like I was about to explode. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I would never have imagined that Wang Xu and his family could be so shameless.
“What’s wrong?” Before Wang Xu could speak, his mother interjected angrily: “This house was bought by my son. He paid the down payment all by himself. Even for renovations and loans, that was all on him. After the divorce, it should naturally go to my son. How can someone like you, who brought nothing into this marriage, have the audacity to ask for our house during the divorce?”
I nearly shouted in anger but managed to hold back. Having my mother-in-law beside me for so long must have been a test from heaven to strengthen my patience; her words made my blood boil.
“Mother-in-law, it seems your memory isn’t what it used to be due to your age. Let me ask you again: didn’t we contribute anything towards the renovations? Didn’t we help with the mortgage payments?”
I couldn’t understand why she could so confidently deny my contributions. It was true that the house was purchased before our marriage and that Wang Xu paid the down payment alone. However, we also contributed half towards the monthly payments and renovations—how could they think they wouldn’t have to share what was rightfully mine? It seemed like this mother-son duo had no intention of giving me my fair share!
"Ha, I may be getting older, but I can't just stand by and watch my son suffer. You say you paid for this house? Where's the money? Where's the evidence? The money for this house came directly from my son's bank card; what does it have to do with you?"
I was shocked as if struck by lightning. I knew my mother-in-law was shameless, but hearing her say such things made me furious.
"Haha, mother-in-law, this house is under Wang Xu's name with my name on it. Do you still want to deny it? The law indeed requires evidence, and since my name Zhuang Jun is on the property deed, I deserve a share. Are you regretting not forcing your son to leave my name off back then? But you should understand, this is what I am entitled to!"
Not to mention the name on the property deed, at that time, for convenience, the renovations and monthly payments were indeed made using Wang Xu's card, but I had also contributed my part. I never expected that now it would become evidence for my mother-in-law to accuse me of not paying; what a ridiculous joke!
"You think you deserve something? How rude of you! You didn't leave anything for us Wang Family, yet you want to take something from my family. You really have some nerve," my mother-in-law complained angrily.
I couldn't help but laugh; my heart ached from the laughter. They could be so shameless.
"Mother-in-law, is it that I didn't leave anything for the Wang Family, or is there another reason you don't know about? If it weren't for you, even if the child took my surname Zhuang, I would still give birth to him. But what did you do? You caused my child's death and still have the face to speak!"
"How can you blame everything on me? When we were looking for a miracle doctor, you didn't even ask! You're young; shouldn't you have inquired properly? Now you're blaming an old woman like me; aren't you afraid you'll never conceive again in your life?"
"You!" I trembled with anger and wanted to slap my mother-in-law across the face. I didn't care about any moral boundaries regarding elders and juniors; I wanted to tear her mouth apart and drag her down with me!
"Cough cough, let's all say less. Mom, come on, it's already this far; just stop talking," Wang Xu suddenly interjected with a seemingly caring tone.
I snapped back, "Shut up, Wang Xu!"
Wang Xu looked at me in disbelief.
"Don't pretend to be compassionate here. If you hadn't told your mom that the monthly payments and renovations were charged to your card, would she know? You brought your mom here after divorcing me; what do you think that means? You’re acting like a good person now; it really disgusts me. Just keep your insincere words to yourself and don’t add to my frustration!"
I was truly fed up with Wang Xu. His intention in bringing his mom was so obvious—he wanted two against one. Some things he couldn't say himself; his mom would say them for him. One played the bad cop while the other played the good cop; it was quite amusing how they came together to scheme against me.
Indeed, Wang Xu was stunned after hearing what I said, unable to react for a long time. Once he slowly regained his composure, he still felt the need to defend himself: "It's not that I asked my mom to come over; she insisted on coming. I couldn't stop her. The monthly payments and renovations were just me mentioning it casually; I didn't mean anything by it. You've misunderstood me, Zhuang Jun."
Wang Xu mumbled, his expression full of grievance. However, I understood that he would only keep insisting that I had misunderstood him, that he hadn't done anything wrong, and that it was all his mother's demands.
It was never his fault.
"So what if it is? Isn't this how it should be? Given the weight of our family's words, what's wrong with me getting involved?"
I sneered, "Of course not. I'm well aware that your words carry a lot of weight. Wang Xu listens to you and does everything based on your mood. Marriage is a matter between two people; our marriage, ha ha, has always involved three people."
"What about the three of us? Did I not take care of you enough when you were pregnant? I spent a lot of money buying you so many things and haven't even asked you for anything in return. You don't know how good you have it, yet you act like you've been wronged."
My mother-in-law's words nearly brought tears to my eyes.
Don't cry, I silently reminded myself while pinching my palm. I needed to regain my composure and cover up my emotions; I couldn't cry at this moment and give more power to my mother-in-law and Wang Xu. They weren't worth my tears.
"Just tell me what you mean. Didn't you come here to negotiate? What are the terms? Speak up so we can discuss them."
I had a feeling that these two were nothing more than two stubborn beasts. They believed I had truly been pregnant before and that I had miscarried, but this didn't stir even a hint of compassion or remorse in them. They only thought that since I was no longer useful, it was time to part ways. When separating, they would take as much from me as they could; they wouldn't let me gain even a little advantage.
In the end, I was the one who had been abandoned.
What a sad reality; these two seemed convinced they had succeeded in their scheme. Were they particularly pleased to find someone like me—a soft target they could manipulate into various shapes?
"We're here to negotiate with you. You voluntarily give up your share of the house, and we'll give you some money as compensation," my mother-in-law continued to dominate the conversation, just like at home.
I coldly asked, "How much are you planning to give me?"
"Let's just give you fifty thousand."
I couldn't stop laughing. When my mother-in-law casually mentioned the sum of fifty thousand, I almost wanted to strangle her. Fifty thousand! She actually said that!
"Actually, we can negotiate..." Wang Xu added quietly.
I was already deeply hurt and recklessly asked him, "When you thought Deng Xiaomei's child was yours, you bought her a house worth one hundred twenty thousand in full cash, just downstairs from our home, exactly like this one, with her name on it alone. Now that my child is gone, you all are rushing to divorce me, and you say I should give up a house worth one hundred twenty thousand and only get five thousand in return. Where do you get the nerve? Don't you think you're being too much?"
I had once been cared for by Wang Xu in every way, so encountering such a situation now made my heart feel even colder. The love I once had was treated this way; I should have gotten used to this disparity long ago.
I should have known Wang Xu was this kind of person.
"You rushed off to find another man and now greedily want our Wang family's money. Is that fair? Now that our Wang Xu agrees to divorce you, you still want to take everything? Let me tell you, all of this was earned by my son himself. Whether it's one hundred twenty thousand or two hundred twenty thousand, it's all money he earned himself. You can spend it however you want, but if you want a divorce, don't think about walking away with any of our family's wealth!"
My mother-in-law was fierce, almost banging the table as she spoke. Although she was quite frail, her presence was still formidable.
I couldn't find any words to describe the shock I felt at that moment. My mother-in-law actually threatened me with divorce to make me give up almost all of my assets. She could be so unreasonable! They were playing a ruthless game!
