Clearly, Miao Miao did not expect it to be Deng Xiaomei. She and I exchanged a glance filled with complex emotions, mixed with concern.
Indeed, this was the time to worry. Our original purpose for coming here was to win over Huang Zhang, to show him our background, loosen his grip, and encourage him to voluntarily give up Deng Xiaomei and hand over any recording devices he might have.
But Lu Ming said this was an important gathering. Huang Zhang bringing Deng Xiaomei along implied that he valued her highly. Did that mean our plan was in vain?
With such worries clouding my mind, Miao Miao directly asked Lu Ming for his opinion, trying to determine if Deng Xiaomei was indeed significant to Huang Zhang.
To my surprise, Lu Ming shook his head. "Probably not."
"But you said this occasion is very important. He didn't bring his wife but chose to bring Deng Xiaomei instead. What else could that mean?" I said anxiously, my tone a bit harsh. Miao Miao glanced at me worriedly, and Lu Ming shot me a confused look.
I could only apologize, "I'm sorry; I got too worked up. I didn't mean anything by it; I'm just a bit nervous."
Lu Ming gave me a calm look as if trying to ease my concerns and explained, "It's very likely that Huang Zhang has a target."
"A target?" Miao Miao asked in response.
"Yes, perhaps he is selecting a target and needs the allure of beauty to assist him. That explains why he didn't bring his wife but chose another female companion."
Lu Ming's words plunged me into deep thought. Indeed, I had been considering that in Huang Zhang's mind, in terms of status between his wife and Deng Xiaomei, Deng Xiaomei might hold a higher position, which is why he brought her along. However, thinking it through from another angle, he might be intending to fully exploit Deng Xiaomei, which is why he brought her here—very possibly.
Regardless, after analyzing it this way, I felt relieved. Miao Miao also seemed more relaxed than before. We decided to stick to our original plan and quietly follow Lu Ming on either side. Gradually, there would always be opportunities to approach Huang Zhang; we couldn't rush it.
Before that, what we needed to do was give Lu Ming enough face so that bringing us along would be a sure win for him. I followed Miao Miao closely and made sure to smile genuinely whenever Lu Ming met any friends. Occasionally, I praised Lu Ming in front of others while also complimenting them; with just a few words exchanged, the atmosphere remained harmonious.
As Miao Miao said, as long as she and I did well, Lu Ming would gain quite a bit from this—at least some of Lu Ming's business partners showed great interest during their cheerful exchanges. Lu Ming seemed quite satisfied; the smile on his face had grown since we first arrived.
After nearly an hour without any direct contact with Huang Zhang, Lu Ming suddenly leaned closer to my ear and whispered, "You and Mu Miaomiao should go take a break."
Mu Miaomiao winked at me, and I followed her into the lounge. Miao Miao linked her arm with mine and walked quickly, saying, "In ten minutes, let's go find Lu Ming."
I noticed she was quite cautious, but since nothing had happened earlier, I asked Miao Miao what was wrong. She sighed and said, "Don't be too nervous. Your eye makeup is a bit light underneath. Let's touch it up in the lounge before we go out. Lu Ming probably wants to see Huang Zhang."
He might know that I want to face Huang Zhang in the best condition, which is why he suggested I freshen up in the lounge.
I didn't have time to think further as Miao Miao pulled me down to sit and began applying layer after layer of makeup on my face. After about ten minutes, Miao Miao announced, "All done." I looked in the mirror and saw that I looked much more polished than before.
"Let's go out first."
What surprised both Miao Miao and me was that when we returned to Lu Ming's side, Huang Zhang was already alone; Deng Xiaomei was nowhere to be seen. We exchanged glances, but Lu Ming seemed unfazed. As Huang Zhang walked toward us, he stepped forward to continue waiting.
"Ha ha, Lu Zong! Long time no see! I didn't expect you to come too. If I had known, I would have searched the whole place for you," Huang Zhang laughed heartily as he shook hands with Lu Ming, looking in good spirits.
I stood on Lu Ming's right side, nervously clenching my fists. I still remembered how Huang Zhang looked; his face seemed like that of a sycophant. Looking at him reminded me not only of the voice recorder but also of the White Maggot in the juice; it had to be him.
"I wouldn't want to disturb President Huang's enjoyment," Lu Ming said, his tone cooler than before.
"Not at all! As long as Lu Zong has time, I'm always at your service," Huang Zhang replied cheerfully. He chatted with Lu Ming for a while before turning his attention to me and Miao Miao. When he looked over at us, I instinctively flinched, but then saw him frown in hesitation. "Is this Lu Zong's companion? She looks somewhat familiar."
Indeed, there was a difference between how Miao Miao and I looked with heavy makeup compared to our bare faces; it was understandable that Huang Zhang couldn't recognize us immediately. His confusion likely stemmed from my reaction.
Lu Ming introduced us generously: "This is Mu Miaomiao, and this is Zhuang Jun."
In less than a minute after Lu Ming's introduction, Huang Zhang's expression changed rapidly yet fleetingly. Within that short time frame, he quickly regained his smile and extended his hand generously. "Nice to meet you! It's my honor to meet two beautiful ladies."
I hesitated for a second before reaching out to shake his hand; Huang Zhang's palm was warm. He released my hand and shook Miao Miao's next.
Then Huang Zhang smiled and asked Lu Ming, "Lu Zong rarely shows such elegance by bringing two beauties along. I'm sure they must be extraordinary. Why didn't you introduce them to me earlier so I could have my eyes opened?"
Lu Ming reached out and pulled me closer to him. I took small steps to get nearer to Lu Ming, noticing a glint of excitement in Huang Zhang's eyes as he continued to smile.
"I don't want her to be too tired."
With that one sentence, Huang Zhang seemed to understand everything and looked at Lu Ming, bursting into laughter. "I didn't expect that Lu Zong has always been so gentlemanly and considerate. No wonder all the lovely ladies around him are drawn to him. It turns out it's not just his looks; even his level of gentleness is something I, Huang, cannot compare with."
Lu Ming smiled lightly. "President Huang, you flatter me. I'm still not as refined as you, constantly changing partners and never seeing the same face twice."
Lu Ming had previously mentioned that Huang Zhang changed his female companions at an astonishing speed, always bringing new faces each time. Deng Xiaomei had been by his side for such a long time, which was rare and indicated that she was not an easy character to deal with. It could even be said that Deng Xiaomei was willing to invest in Huang Zhang, earning his appreciation.
"Not at all! How can I compare to Lu Zong? You bring two at a time with such flair! Ah, this is my own fault for being presumptuous. I originally wanted to prepare a grand gift for Lu Zong, but it seems you don't need it anymore," Huang Zhang suddenly said regretfully.
Miao Miao and I exchanged glances, and I guessed Miao Miao also didn't quite understand what Huang Zhang meant. But as long as Lu Ming understood, we would have ways to find out later.
"President Huang, businessmen are always greedy. I'm quite curious about the grand gift from Huang Zhong."
Lu Ming's straightforward remark made Huang Zhang clap in approval. "Great! Hearing you say that puts me at ease. As long as you give the word, I can easily find ten or eight exquisite items for you, Lu Zong."
After Huang Zhang finished speaking, Lu Ming gave Miao Miao and me a knowing glance. Miao Miao pulled me away temporarily, leading us through the crowd. She whispered, "What does Huang Zhang mean? Is he planning to give Lu Ming something?"
I shook my head. "I don't know either; it sounds confusing. Lu Ming mentioned they have business relations—could it be related to the company?"
As Miao Miao and I walked outside in confusion, suddenly the lights in the venue dimmed. With a whoosh, the spotlight on the main stage lit up, and music began to play. The people around us were just as puzzled.
"What’s going on?"
"I don’t know; let’s wait and see."
Almost everyone's gaze turned toward the stage when suddenly Deng Xiaomei's voice echoed out, startling me. What was she doing?
Clearly, Deng Xiaomei was swaying her slender waist to the music, but what she was doing seemed very strange to me. She was brought here by Huang Zhang to dance?
Deng Xiaomei's eyes were filled with allure as she turned her gaze, raising her delicate hand to her face, sliding it down to her pronounced collarbone, and then slowly moving it down further until it rested on her curves. Finally, she elegantly moved her hand away. My gaze shifted downward to her flat abdomen; it seemed she had indeed given birth.
A woman who had just become a mother was posing seductively on stage. It wasn't until the music stopped that Deng Xiaomei ceased her movements and stood still, contentedly accepting the applause from the audience until Huang Zhang returned to the stage.
Huang Zhang stood beside Deng Xiaomei, expressing his gratitude. It was only then that I realized this gathering had been organized by Huang Zhang; he had arranged a performance for everyone present. To be fair, it was quite a challenge for Deng Xiaomei to come and do this so soon after giving birth, yet she managed to perform flawlessly.
As I pondered this, Miao Miao suddenly interjected, “Zhuang Jun, I really want to know what gift Huang Zhang is going to give.”
When she said this, she was staring intently at Deng Xiaomei. Following her gaze, my uneasy premonition intensified.
“Are you implying that...”
Miao Miao nodded lightly. “Are you saying that Huang Zhang intends to give Deng Xiaomei to Lu Ming? And that Lu Ming must have known about this all along, which is why he brought us here?”
Her speculative words sounded more like a statement of fact in my ears.
