"Alright, Miss Zhuang, if you want to hurry, let's hurry. I've almost finished my part with Lu Zong, so now please check the goods," Huang Zhang said, pointing to the voice recorder in front of him and even pushing it closer to me.
I watched as the voice recorder moved nearer, and for a moment, I hesitated to reach out for it, my hand hovering in the air before I ultimately pulled it back silently.
Huang Zhang raised an eyebrow at me.
"What’s wrong? Doesn’t Miss Zhuang want to take a look? Is it not what you wanted?" He smiled in a way that felt very greasy.
"What does Deng Xiaomei mean to you?" I looked up at him seriously; this might be the last time I saw Huang Zhang, and I wanted to ask one final question.
"Her?" Huang Zhang smirked coldly: "Miss Zhuang, what do you think she is?"
My thoughts were in disarray.
"I think you may not have any love for Deng Xiaomei, but after being by your side for so long and sacrificing so much for you, even if she has been with many men, she still relies on you. I believe Deng Xiaomei would hope that you at least don’t look down on her."
"Look down on her? Haha, Miss Zhuang, that's an interesting point, but isn’t that your goal?"
"I don’t have any goals. If I could do it all over again, I would just hope to maintain a good family, not resign and cut off my own future when I wasn't pregnant, and while understanding my husband, also protect my own interests. If I could go back further, I wouldn’t marry a weak man from a single-parent family. Although that’s very realistic, it’s my only hope now."
"Heh, typical woman’s thinking." Huang Zhang didn’t scoff at my words outright, but it was clear he strongly disagreed; perhaps in his world, there were only pros and cons without emotions involved.
"So your collaboration this time is more important than Deng Xiaomei, is that what you're saying?"
I used to think that money could always be earned back as long as people were around; losing some profits didn’t matter. But facing Huang Zhang, his attitude towards Deng Xiaomei made me realize that some people truly don’t think that way.
"Yes." Huang Zhang looked quite impatient; he seemed unwilling to continue this topic. He pushed the voice recorder directly into my hands: "Take a quick look. If it's what you want, take it. If not, just tear up the contract and we’ll end the transaction here."
He was already too impatient to put on a smile in front of Lu Ming. Perhaps after this deal, he felt justified in not having to act submissive before Lu Ming anymore.
I picked up the recorder and checked it repeatedly, knowing it was the same one from before. The testimony inside was very clear. Ironically, because of Deng Xiaomei's confidence at that time, she deliberately said things in front of us that could serve as evidence, relying on the support of Huang Zhang behind her.
And now, the very Huang Zhang she depended on was placing Deng Xiaomei's trust on the table, urging me to accept quickly. I knew I had no right to pity Deng Xiaomei; I could only sigh for her current situation. In truth, we were all the same.
We were all small women living in a vast world.
"Alright, your things are now in your hands. How you handle them next is your business. Of course, since President Lu is so generous, I must also present a generous gift to President Lu. Whether Xiaomei lives or dies from now on will be decided by President Lu and Miss Zhuang. I, Huang, promise here that I will not get involved in whatever happens in the future."
Huang Zhang smiled as he looked at Lu Ming. Lu Ming glanced at him coldly and mocked him with a sarcastic tone, "President Huang is indeed generous; let me thank President Huang for his kindness."
"No, no, it's thanks to President Lu's support. If it weren't for President Lu's good intentions to help, my cooperation with Miss Zhuang might not have been settled yet, hahaha."
Huang Zhang was obviously pleased with his cunning maneuvering. Watching his smug face made me feel sick. I stood up and said that since it was over, I would leave first. Lu Ming stood up as well and said he would leave together with me. We walked out of the private room one after the other, but my mood remained quite poor.
Clearly, I had obtained what I wanted, yet I felt particularly oppressed. Acquiring something in such an undignified manner felt just like stealing; it left an uncomfortable feeling in my heart. Lu Ming seemed unaffected, relaxed as if he had just enjoyed an afternoon tea.
I initially thought this transaction would be insignificant for Lu Ming and wouldn’t cause him much loss. However, before evening arrived, a phone call from Wang Yue came in, and she immediately scolded me: "Zhuang Jun, what do you mean by this? Explain yourself! How has Lu Ge treated you? And how have you treated Lu Ge? Don't go too far!"
I immediately realized that Wang Yue must have found out about Lu Ming helping me with the transaction involving Huang Zhang. This was indeed my fault; I could only bear it. But that didn’t mean Wang Yue had the right to lecture me as an outsider: "I think this is my personal matter."
"Personal matter? Ha! You really have the nerve to say that! Do you know how important this cooperation is for Lu Ge? You may feel relaxed and happy now, but what about Lu Ge? Have you ever thought about him?"
"Lu Ming is an adult; does he not know what he is doing? Does he need you to come here and point fingers at me for what I'm doing wrong? If Lu Ming is foolish enough not to understand what he's paying for better than you do, then if you come here to blame me, I have nothing to say."
Wang Yue was probably furious from my words; she stammered "you you you" for a long time before finally hanging up in anger. Although I sounded bold on the phone, I was still nervous inside. She wouldn't have called me out of nowhere just to scold me—was everything causing too great a loss for Lu Ming?
My guess was ultimately confirmed when Qin Yi called me to explain the situation.
It turned out to be more complicated than I had imagined; this collaboration with Huang Zhang was indeed significant for Lu Ming.
"I'm sorry, Zhuang Jun, I accidentally let it slip to Wang Yue. It wasn't Lu Ming who told me; it was someone on my side who overheard Huang Zhang mention good news. I didn't realize it was related to Lu Ming, so I asked a few more questions. I truly didn't mean to pry into your personal matters."
I took a deep breath and urged her to continue. Qin Yi went on, "I didn't expect Lu Ming to be so generous. He usually treats the women around him quite well. Although he doesn't say much, he helps when he can. However, this time, the loss is significant."
I nervously pressed for details, "What exactly happened? Lu Ming never mentioned anything to me; I have no idea what’s going on."
"Oh? Is that so? That's really unfortunate. I think if you had known, you probably wouldn't have agreed to this matter."
Qin Yi's words stirred up my guilt, and I quickly asked, "Please tell me what you need to say now; I'm quite anxious. If there’s anything I can do, I will find a way to make up for it."
"I'm really sorry; it wasn't intentional. Actually, Lu Ming's father intended to use this collaboration as a test for him. If Lu Ming performed well, things would go smoothly for him afterward. But now this issue has reached Lu Ming's father, and he is very angry. He says he wants to punish Lu Ming and take back all the authority he has."
The more Qin Yi spoke, the colder my heart felt. If that were true, the voice recorder in my hand represented both hope and despair. If that were the case, my debt to Lu Ming would be far greater than I realized.
"Qin Yi, by telling me this, what do you hope I will do? The contract with Huang Zhang has already been signed. How can I make up for my current mistakes?"
I genuinely didn’t know what to do; I felt lost. Facing this situation was more stressful than discovering Wang Xu’s infidelity. I couldn't even bear to think about how to cope if the consequences were confirmed.
"Honestly, I'm not sure either. I'll try to see if I can talk to Lu Ming's father through my dad. He’s a very stubborn man; once he decides something, it's hard to change his mind. But I'll do my best to salvage this situation; would that be okay?"
"That would really mean a lot; thank you so much, Qin Yi."
"You're welcome. Well then, goodbye."
After hanging up the phone, all the negative emotions inside me surged forth. How could this be happening? Although I could clearly sense that Wang Yue's call was definitely related to Qin Yi, if it was indeed her intention to point this out, then it wouldn't be surprising. However, if that were the case, no matter how Qin Yi tried to tell me, it wouldn't lessen my guilt.
Feeling distressed, I pressed Lu Ming's number and directly asked him if it was really as Qin Yi said—if I had caused him such deep suffering. Lu Ming did not deny it: "That's correct."
"You!" I was filled with anger. "Aren't you just trying to harm me on purpose? You clearly wanted me to live in guilt! You know that if I found out about this, I would feel terrible. Why would you do this? Don't you think you're being extremely unreasonable?"
Cursing at Lu Ming like this didn't alleviate my guilt at all. What should I do? I was so confused.
"You don't need to feel guilty; this is something I owe you, and I'm repaying it," Lu Ming suddenly said.
"What? What do you mean you owe me?" I couldn't grasp what Lu Ming was saying. He had helped me so many times; what could he possibly owe me? Was he referring to the time he imprisoned me?
"This all started because of me, so consider it my repayment to you."
I couldn't understand; I simply couldn't comprehend what Lu Ming was saying. Just when I wanted him to explain further, he said, "Sorry, I have an important meeting here. Let's talk later. Goodbye."
With that, Lu Ming hung up the phone. His mention of a meeting prevented me from immediately calling him back for clarification. So for the next while, I was tormented by a whirlwind of questions and guilt, just waiting for Lu Ming's explanation.
