The next day, Miao Miao and Gu Xiang came to our house, carrying large bags of items. I hurried over to help them and invited them to sit in the living room.
My mom was also very happy, sitting next to Miao Miao, holding her hand and chatting warmly, expressing her gratitude while also peeling oranges for Gu Xiang.
Miao Miao often comes to our house, so she feels quite relaxed here. It was Gu Xiang's first visit, and he seemed a bit reserved. I teased him about being so uptight, saying he didn't seem like someone who was well-versed in psychology. Gu Xiang replied that before being an expert in psychology, he was still a person.
We chatted and laughed until my dad came home, smiling as he pulled Gu Xiang over to have a drink with him. Although my mom didn't like seeing my dad drink, she let it slide since it was for Gu Xiang's sake.
Gu Xiang wasn't used to drinking baijiu, but to avoid disappointing my dad, he had a few glasses. His face started turning red, and his speech became slightly slurred. I had never seen Gu Xiang like this before; I couldn't help but smirk at his dazed expression.
I felt unusually happy after cutting ties with Wang Xu; everything seemed amusing to me. I glanced at my mom and noticed the worry in her eyes. My heart warmed, and I squeezed her hand, wanting to reassure her that everything was fine now.
Everyone was enjoying the food and drinks, especially me; I felt like crying from happiness.
After a few rounds of drinks, a sudden rapid knocking on the door interrupted the laughter inside. Everyone fell silent. My mom stood up first and muttered, "Who could it be at this hour? Is it some relative? Is it Old Liu and the others?"
She looked at my dad, who had turned red from drinking too much. He waved his hand dismissively, "Just go see who it is; you'll find out. Come on, Xiao Gu, let's have another drink."
My dad was genuinely enjoying himself. My mom got up to open the door but took a while without any response. Then we heard some faint arguing outside. Everyone at the table sensed something was off. By the time Miao Miao and I reached the door, we found that it was Wang Xu knocking.
Wang Xu's face was flushed; I couldn't tell if it was from drinking or something else. He glared with wide eyes like a thirsty wolf spotting its prey. Seeing him like that made me nervous; I quickly stepped forward and pulled my mom behind me for protection.
Looking at Wang Xu's expression, I truly couldn't guess what he might do next.
"What are you doing here? You know you're not welcome," I said.
Upon hearing my voice, Wang Xu slowly lifted his head to look at me. The whole process felt terrifying; his shocked demeanor clearly indicated that something had happened.
"You, Zhuang Jun, tell me the truth." He spoke slowly and heavily, staring at me as if trying to see through me. "Are you pregnant or not?"
I was taken aback, looking fearfully at Wang Xu in front of me, then glancing at Miao Miao who had walked over. I never expected Wang Xu would ask me such things!
I pretended to be calm and swallowed hard, trying not to reveal any signs of panic. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Wang Xu suddenly shouted at me, "I'm asking you! Have you ever been pregnant? Are you lying to me? You never had a child, did you?"
His barrage of questions made my scalp tingle. I felt flustered and didn't know how to respond, but Miao Miao pulled me back. My dad and Gu Xiang stood in front of me, and my dad was furious, grabbing Wang Xu by the collar as if he was about to hit him.
"You still don't regret it, do you? You still want to provoke my daughter? Do you believe I could beat you to death right now? I've wanted to hit you for a long time!" My dad was genuinely angry. Although he was a police officer, he knew he shouldn't resort to violence easily.
Even though he was furious with Wang Xu, he hadn't laid a hand on him until now. With his grip on Wang Xu's collar tightening, I feared that this might lead to trouble and affect my dad's reputation.
"Dad, please don't get angry. Don't do anything rash; let's talk this out." Miao Miao and my mom were both trying to calm him down, urging him to let go of Wang Xu. Gu Xiang also chimed in, and eventually, my dad released his grip.
"I think you know that you're not welcome here. If you have something to say, say it now; if not, please leave." Gu Xiang stood slightly in front of my dad, maintaining a safe distance between the two.
Wang Xu's eyes were still red as he pushed through the crowd, glaring at me and repeating his question.
"I'm asking you, Zhuang Jun, are you pregnant or not? Don't lie to me."
I already understood Wang Xu's purpose for coming here and prepared myself mentally to respond: "I don't know what you're talking about. How would you know if I'm pregnant?"
"Of course I wouldn't know! It’s only now that I see how ugly your true nature is. You’re pretending to be a good person while claiming not to want any money or property? You're just pretending to be pregnant to trick me into giving you money, right?"
Wang Xu became increasingly agitated; it seemed like he wanted to charge at me. Gu Xiang kept blocking him, which allowed me this moment of safety to speak.
"Wang Xu, you know that when speaking, one must provide evidence. How can you accuse me of not being pregnant without any proof? Such a significant matter cannot be decided by me alone. So tell me, why do you suspect me? Bring out your evidence!"
I was taking a gamble, betting that Wang Xu had nothing to prove his claims. Otherwise, he wouldn't have rushed over to question me like this; he would have directly accused me instead.
This was a psychological game between Wang Xu and me. Clearly, he didn't expect my firm stance. He tugged at the corners of his mouth, the sarcasm on his face unmistakable. "Fine, I have no evidence, but the heavens are watching. Zhuang Jun, you know very well what you've done!"
"Then tell me, why did you come to doubt me for no reason? Who told you all this?" I was particularly curious about that.
"Hah, I'm not afraid for you to know. That's right, it was Deng Xiaomei. Surprised? You thought the person you wanted to deal with was already finished, yet she can still turn the tables on you," Wang Xu mocked coldly.
I couldn't help but laugh in anger. "What does Deng Xiaomei have to do with me? She's someone who destroyed my family and is still not satisfied. What good could she possibly say about me? If she claims I’m not pregnant and you believe her, then I could just as easily say that her child is fabricated. Would you believe that?"
Wang Xu's face turned particularly ugly. "You're just being unreasonable! Ever since you became friends with Mu Miaomiao, you've been daydreaming all day long. Which man doesn't cheat? Even if I cheated once, so what? Can't it be forgiven?"
Thinking about Wang Xu's infidelity reminded me of what Lu Ming said; this shouldn't have been something I had to deal with. Due to one of his decisions, fate had fallen upon us. As I pondered this, I didn't immediately respond to Wang Xu's words until Miao Miao tugged at my sleeve, bringing my thoughts back to reality.
"I gave you a chance before; I wanted to maintain our family relationship. But the way you and your mother-in-law treat me shows that you don't see me as family. Now you're playing the victim? Let me tell you, Wang Xu, it was you who cheated first! There's nothing more to discuss; if you've made a mistake, then own up to it!"
"Yes, I made a mistake; I admit I cheated. But that's not why I'm here today! I'm here to ask if you're really pregnant or if you've been lying to me all along by refusing to let me accompany you to the hospital because you're afraid of being exposed!"
I felt utterly helpless. "I've already said that everything requires evidence. If you come here without proof trying to force an admission from me, I won't agree! Don't think that just because you speak carelessly, I'll accept your claims."
"Fine." Wang Xu seemed on the verge of exploding. If it weren't for my dad and Gu Xiang being present, I couldn't guarantee he wouldn't have the impulse to strangle me right there. Now he smiled strangely with a flushed face: "You want evidence? Fine! Just wait! Zhuang Jun, when I bring evidence before you, don't come crying to me!"
Wang Xu stormed off in anger, leaving behind a room full of silence. Miao Miao stood beside me and asked if everything was alright. I shook my head: "Isn't this just what I've brought upon myself?"
Now my back was drenched in cold sweat; behind my forced calmness lay endless fear. I never expected Wang Xu would discover this matter; I thought I had hidden it well enough.
Yes, if it weren't for a lie I casually told back then, I wouldn't have to go through such elaborate deceptions, constantly worrying about when I would be discovered. I'm truly fed up with living in fear like this.
I thought I would be able to get a divorce soon and escape this life, but it seems that will take some more time.
I'm really scared. If Wang Xu finds out that I was never pregnant, what will he do?
"Don't be afraid, Zhuang Jun. You're about to get divorced anyway. Even if Wang Xu finds out, so what? It would just be a joke. He and his mother are adults; how could they not know whether I was pregnant or not? It's no one's fault. Alright, you don't need to worry about any of this. Just stop thinking about it."
Miao Miao is worried that I might feel uneasy again and quickly comforts me not to take it to heart. I know I must not let myself be affected, but it's frustrating that a perfectly good dinner party has been ruined by Wang Xu's presence, especially in front of Gu Xiang.
"I'm really sorry for making you witness this. This is my rotten family situation; it's quite funny, isn't it?" I awkwardly smile at Gu Xiang.
Gu Xiang shakes her head, her expression serious: "If you ever need help in the future, make sure to call me. Don't bear it all alone. You're a woman and have little resistance; don't let yourself be bullied."
Gu Xiang's concern for me is quite heartwarming. I nod gratefully. Although everyone is trying to act unaffected, we all know that tonight has been completely ruined by Wang Xu.
Not just tonight; I'm afraid my nightmares will continue to be haunted by Wang Xu.
