The meaning of Deng Xiaomei is very clear; she is definitely not going to pay for this bag. Although Miao Miao and I originally had some responsibility, if it weren't for Deng Xiaomei, this incident wouldn't have happened. Therefore, we had no intention of compensating. The three of us stood in the store while the staff mediated in the middle, likely hoping one party would take on the responsibility.
"Aren't you divorced and received a lot of money? How come you can't afford a bag? You act like you're broke. Stop pretending; are you really that unwilling to part with money? No wonder you're having a divorce," Deng Xiaomei scoffed.
I sneered, "Yes, but you know how hard it is. You took my husband and made him buy you a house, so you can be with someone else's husband? Fortunately, you're not very clever; if it weren't for my evidence, all of this would fall on you."
There were originally three or four staff members around us, and they probably guessed why Deng Xiaomei and I were at each other's throats from the start. Their attitude began to shift in my favor, increasingly insisting that Deng Xiaomei should compensate.
"Miss, this bag was damaged while in your possession; you are obligated to pay for it. We will package it up for you now. Will you be paying in cash or by card?"
Deng Xiaomei's expression was one of incredulous laughter, her smile dripping with sarcasm. "On what basis do you think I should pay? I took the bag, but I got it from her; shouldn't she be responsible too?"
"Miss, it was during your struggle that the bag was damaged, so..."
Deng Xiaomei continued to negotiate with the staff, which had little to do with Miao Miao and me anymore. However, we chose to stay put and watch the show as Deng Xiaomei's face turned red while she kept deflecting responsibility. Miao Miao occasionally threw in some sharp comments.
"Hurry up and pay! Can't afford it? Did your boyfriend run out of money for you? How pathetic! Didn't you say someone was coming? Where are they? Oh, so you're not just after one man's husband? Everyone, take a good look at this person; what a talent!"
Deng Xiaomei shot Miao Miao an angry glare. "Don't go too far."
"How am I going too far? Did I say something wrong? Then use facts to refute me! Why has your arrogance diminished so much now that there's no one backing you up?"
Miao Miao was alluding to Huang Zhang. Now that Huang Zhang had washed his hands of Deng Xiaomei and even betrayed her, it's easy to imagine how miserable her situation had become. Moreover, any other lovers of Deng Xiaomei would likely hesitate to approach her after seeing Huang Zhang's actions. Compared to her past, Deng Xiaomei's current state was like night and day.
Just as our argument heated up, a young man suddenly walked in from outside. He looked to be about the same age as Deng Xiaomei and slowly approached, asking with confusion, "Xiaomei, what's going on?"
Deng Xiaomei grabbed the man's arm and tried to pull him away. I immediately called out to her, "How can you leave? You haven't compensated yet! Are you going to pay or not? If you don't pay, they will really call the police, and you won't be able to leave this mall."
After hearing my words, the man frowned as he looked at me and then back at Deng Xiaomei before asking again, "What happened? I've been waiting for you outside for quite a while; did something happen?"
Deng Xiaomei shook her head with a flushed face and whispered, "It’s none of your business; just ignore it."
"He can ignore it as long as you take responsibility. Oh right, I know you're no longer able to handle this. So handsome guy, let me tell you: this woman doesn't know what her relationship is with you, but she damaged someone's bag here. You decide whether you'll pay or she will; I think it should be you since she's used to spending other men's money," Miao Miao mocked coldly.
The man furrowed his brows tighter, clearly unhappy. "What do you mean by that? Can you speak properly? If something is damaged, compensation is necessary. Is there really a need for personal attacks?"
The man did not know who Deng Xiaomei was, yet he had been trying hard to defend her. Deng Xiaomei remained silent, her head down as she clutched the man's arm. Miao Miao scoffed, "Personal attack? If this is a personal attack, then what Deng Xiaomei did is truly outrageous."
"Can you speak properly? Just state the facts. What exactly is going on here? Can't anyone tell me?" The man said this while staring at Teller, who then explained the situation to him. The man remained quiet throughout the explanation and finally asked how much it would cost.
When Teller revealed the amount, the man's brows furrowed again as he muttered under his breath, "That's so expensive."
Throughout all of this, Deng Xiaomei acted like a stranger, silent with her head down and back turned to us. It felt as if she was completely detached from the situation, a stark contrast to her previous self.
"I'll take care of it; where do I pay?" The man suddenly said, which prompted Deng Xiaomei, who had been silent until now, to speak up: "Where are you getting that much money from? Don't meddle in this."
"It’s only fair to compensate. I still have money in my card; can I split it into two cards? The money in one card might not be enough..."
"Alright, alright, don’t embarrass me. Who asked you to help pay? You should leave; this has nothing to do with you. Just go; they can't do anything to me."
"Deng Xiaomei, you broke something and need to compensate for it. That's completely normal. Just buy the bag; you must really like it if you're holding onto it. Consider it a gift from me."
The man was caught up in the argument with Deng Xiaomei over who should pay. He wanted to help her but she refused. However, it seemed that Deng Xiaomei couldn't afford it herself, and the man was struggling too. Deng Xiaomei's insistence on not letting him pay seemed like an attempt to escape responsibility.
"Then they should also contribute; why shouldn't they pay?" Deng Xiaomei pointed at me and Miao Miao, visibly agitated and angry. "I'm willing to compensate, but they should also chip in."
Miao Miao rolled her eyes dramatically and replied helplessly, "Miss, the bag was fine when it was in our hands. If you hadn't yanked it away, none of this would have happened. Now you're trying to shirk responsibility? If not, we can call the police and let them handle it; let's see how that goes."
Deng Xiaomei surprisingly did not continue arguing with Miao Miao about this matter. The man seized the opportunity to say he would go pay and urged Deng Xiaomei not to dwell on it anymore. After he left, I noticed that Deng Xiaomei's eyes were red-rimmed, looking quite aggrieved.
I suddenly laughed and said, "So you do know how to feel pain. I thought you were cold-blooded; it's rare to see this side of you."
"Are you happy now? Satisfied? Do you think you've won? Let me tell you, this isn't over; don't think things will be easy for you!" Deng Xiaomei warned me through gritted teeth, looking particularly resentful.
I truly couldn't understand her perspective. "Deng Xiaomei, what right do you have to hate me? You destroyed my family and took my husband away from me. I think anything I do to you is justified. Instead of lowering yourself to live a decent life, you come here to blame me?"
"Bah," Deng Xiaomei spat angrily. "Do you think I want to be with your husband? Look at what your husband is like; who would want him? Do you think I want to push you out of the way and take your place? Stop dreaming! I planned to sell that apartment after a while anyway. But you—what else have you lost besides that apartment? With your attitude leading us here, it's all your own fault."
"I deserve this?" I laughed angrily. "Shouldn't I do something when my husband cheats? Am I supposed to willingly lose a house to you? Who do you think you are? I'm really grateful that you're not interested in my husband. Honestly, if it weren't for your pregnancy, Wang Xu wouldn't even be interested in you. Don't think I'm talking nonsense; just look at yourself, you look like a streetwalker. Have some shame, will you?"
Running into someone as brazen as Deng Xiaomei really is bad luck for me. It seems that when the man arrived, Deng Xiaomei stopped engaging and took his arm, quietly scolding him for getting involved in this matter. The man just smiled and said he was glad Deng Xiaomei was happy.
I stood a short distance away, watching Deng Xiaomei and the man, noting their matching ages and looks as they spoke to each other. Suddenly, it hit me; if Deng Xiaomei always presented herself like this, I might think they were just two students having a petty argument over trivial matters. But the identity she carries is something I could never forgive in my lifetime.
As I walked out of the store, I brushed past Deng Xiaomei. We both chose to ignore each other and continued on our way. Just thinking about her made me feel uneasy. Miao Miao probably noticed and pulled me into a dessert shop, ordering a bunch of treats and telling me not to overthink things. She said we should just wait for the divorce decree; Deng Xiaomei is now alone and can't pull any tricks anymore. Whatever happens next is her own responsibility.
I understood Miao Miao's point. Now that she no longer has Huang Zhang, she has no support. From now on, whatever we do to Deng Xiaomei is entirely up to us without any obstacles, unlike before when we had no way to act.
After taking a spoonful of dessert, Miao Miao sighed contentedly. "This is great! Seeing Deng Xiaomei like that was so satisfying. She just lost over ten thousand dollars; that should make her uncomfortable for a while, haha."
As Miao Miao continued talking, she glanced at me again. "Zhuang Jun, do you still have plans to deal with Deng Xiaomei?"
I nodded vigorously and replied seriously, "I have every intention of doing so—very seriously and firmly. Nothing will change that, so don't worry. What I saw today or didn't see doesn't matter; my resolve remains the same."
"Yeah, I know. I just wanted to remind you that some of the suffering you've endured shouldn't go unaddressed; it would be too unfair."
