I didn't expect Qin Yi to come looking for me, sitting across from me with a pleading attitude. She hadn't mentioned the significant help she had given me last time, but her presence alone was already conveying that fact.
"Zhuang Jun, it might be inappropriate for me to come to you, but this is my only option left. I believe there’s no one else who can help me besides you."
I slowly set down the cup of water in my hand and forced a smile. "Miss Qin, I think you're overthinking it. If there's something you can't handle, relying on me would be even more difficult. Of course, I appreciate your trust."
Qin Yi smiled gently, seemingly unfazed by my words. After a few seconds of silence, she said, "I think you underestimate yourself, Zhuang Jun. Sometimes I really like your personality—you're not competitive or aggressive. That's why sometimes I can't help but present things to you with both hands for you to take."
I wondered if I was overthinking or if Qin Yi was genuinely about to bring up her previous assistance. So I said seriously, "Miss Qin, I truly appreciate what you did before. Without your help, I wouldn't have been able to get divorced. So if there's something you need to discuss, let's talk about it and see if we can find a solution together."
Qin Yi smiled slightly, her expression clear as she nodded. "Of course. You probably guessed it; I'm here because of Lu Ming. What happened last time really affected him a lot. This matter could have been resolved easily; I could have just asked my father to help persuade him. But Lu Ming has been refusing, and now it's impossible to even contact him."
"Yeah, he probably really doesn't want to accept it."
Qin Yi paused for a moment. "That's true, but he can't just act on impulse. This situation is different from before; Lu Ming is just confused right now. He needs someone to persuade him, and I don't think I can do it anymore. If you're willing, Zhuang Jun..."
"Qin Yi," I gently interrupted her. Seeing that she wasn't angry, I continued, "First of all, I believe Lu Ming is an adult; he knows what he's doing and what he wants. Perhaps what you think he should want is actually something he doesn't want at all. Isn't it better to let go if he doesn't want it?"
"Ha! I think your mindset is quite youthful, Zhuang Jun." Qin Yi replied, "As Lu Ming's Ex-Wife, I understand how difficult each step has been for him. Some desperate measures are unavoidable; you might not feel this directly, but from his perspective, it's truly a last resort."
I lowered my head and continued listening to Qin Yi.
"It's been incredibly hard for him to get to this point. Right now, all he needs is a nod from me so we can go talk to my father for help together. Zhuang Jun, can you just stand by and watch Lu Ming suddenly lose everything?"
After a moment of silence, I pondered my response: "Qin Yi, although it sounds harsh to say this out loud, the person who previously left me with nothing is now asking me to choose his fate. I hope it ends up being the same as mine."
"Why should I help others get what they want after losing everything? Do I really seem that kind-hearted, that saintly?"
Qin Yi sighed, "Zhuang Jun, Lu Ming didn't mean to. He didn't think his choice would affect you, right? It was an unintentional mistake. What I hope you can understand is that he truly didn't do it on purpose."
"But my family has already been destroyed. What does that mean? Who can I turn to for justice? In the end, I'm the one who has to bear the consequences. I've prepared myself for the difficulties ahead, so I believe I have the willpower, and Lu Ming should have it too."
It seems to be a case of reaping what one sows.
"Zhuang Jun, no matter what, I'm asking you for help this time. If you're willing, I would be extremely grateful. This matter concerns Lu Ming's future, and I don't want him to ruin it. If you're willing to help me, I'll be very happy; if not, I respect your decision. Please think it over and let me know, okay?"
I have to admit that Qin Yi's success isn't just due to her family background or her personality. Even now, she hasn't used past events to pressure me; instead, she gives me room to choose. Honestly, my resolve has started to waver. The person asking for my help is none other than Qin Yi; how could I refuse?
In the end, I told her that I really needed to think about it before responding. She left happily, repeatedly thanking me for taking the time to meet her. I could only smile bitterly and say that it was truly a waste of her time. After we parted ways, I kept thinking about Qin Yi's request; I couldn't accept it but also couldn't refuse.
It was truly a dilemma.
That night, Miao Miao came home late. As soon as she got home, she dragged me out to the balcony to enjoy the moonlight. During this time, she didn't speak and just sighed repeatedly. Finally, I asked, "Instead of sighing at the moon, why don't you tell me what's going on? Is there new progress between you and Wang Nan?"
Miao Miao shot me a glance and said, "I want to tell you that I want to get back together with Wang Nan. What do you think?"
I nodded vigorously, "Of course I'm supportive! You two are a great match. So if you're really getting back together, does that mean his parents have agreed?"
A girl as stubborn as Miao Miao definitely wouldn't bow down easily unless something truly moved her.
Miao Miao shook her head, denying it: "It's not that his parents agreed; it's just that he has been insisting for a long time. He told me a lot about how we can't be apart. He wants to stay in the overseas project until his parents agree, and then come back to develop abroad. If his parents don't agree, he won't care."
Abroad, perhaps when we were younger, we thought of it as such a grand choice; going overseas seemed good. But at this age, we know that once you get into an overseas project, it's truly a matter of calling for help without any response.
"Where does Wang Nan plan to go?"
"Shate."
I gasped: "That's not a good choice."
"But there's no other way. Wang Nan said that's where he feels most suited. Once he gets there, he can really make a name for himself without relying on his family. He said that, and it made me excited. I really can't bear to be apart from Wang Nan. I know that if we want to be together, there will always be a way, even if it's difficult."
At this point, I already understood what Miao Miao meant. She wanted to leave here and be with Wang Nan; together they could overcome any harsh environment.
"Go ahead. As long as you want to, I believe you can consider everything thoroughly. Just go when you feel it's right; I'm here to support you."
I smiled at her, wanting to provide the strongest support as her best friend. This was the time she needed it the most while she was feeling uncertain.
"Ah, I wish it were that easy, but it's not as simple as it sounds. I'll think about it some more."
At that moment, I suddenly remembered the time I couldn't get in touch with Miao Miao while she was abroad. Now that I had time and had passed the most sensitive period, I always wanted to ask her what had happened. Miao Miao took a deep breath, her gaze firm, and slowly replied.
"I had an abortion while I was abroad."
“……”
“Wang Nan never knew. He probably thought I was just avoiding him and felt a bit unhappy because I was being unreasonable at that time. But I was actually going through the abortion procedure with his mother by my side. She told me that I wouldn’t be able to enter the Wang family’s door with this child. At that moment, I thought, since I can’t enter anyway, I can’t let a child suffer, so I agreed to the abortion.”
I suddenly grabbed Miao Miao's hand, but her expression was much calmer than I had imagined.
“Actually, don’t think that I was very sad. It’s really okay. When I think about how terrifying it would be to give birth to a child without a father and be looked down upon by my father’s family, it’s quite frightening. When the child was still inside me, there was no awareness at all; that was a kind of relief for me. So I didn’t feel too sad; it was just those days when I lacked the energy to face Wang Nan and was afraid of being exposed.”
Miao Miao was stronger and more rational than I had imagined. Compared to her, I felt more anxious. Instead, she cleared my doubts with just a few words. Yes, what other options were there? To give birth and accept the unfair treatment from the world and the cold remarks from those around?
I just didn’t expect that during that time, she had gone through so much. My heart ached for her, and I turned around to hug her, softly saying, “Miao Miao, my issues have been resolved now; you should take care of your own matters too. Although I don’t know how I can help, I will always support you from behind, just like you have always supported me. You must take care of yourself, okay?”
Saying such things felt empty, but it was all I could offer Miao Miao right now. I had already divorced, and she was still confused in love. What made me feel better was that she had met a man who knew how to cherish and care for her, someone who wouldn’t let go until the very end. She was already doing much better than me, so I knew she would definitely find happiness.
But I was also about to face a problem: my only and best friend in this life was about to leave me to seek her happiness. In my disappointment mixed with blessings, it felt somewhat sad to think that there would be fewer opportunities for frequent contact with Miao Miao in the future.
I hope they return to the country soon. It would be wonderful if Wang Nan’s parents came around and agreed to Miao Miao dating Wang Nan. Just thinking about such a happy scenario makes me look forward to it; at least it wouldn’t be too far away since keeping in touch is already difficult on ordinary days.
