My interactions with Lu Ming have always been filled with tension, and this time, the accusation from Wang Xu of deliberately harming me has been firmly established. I might not have to worry about facing the same danger for a while. The next time I see Wang Xu on the road, I will take a detour.
Regarding this matter, my mother-in-law came to find me, but I definitely won't meet her. Having learned my lesson once in such a short time, it would truly be a matter of intelligence if I fell for it again.
However, my mother-in-law knows where I live. She doesn't need to come to my workplace to block me; she can just stand at the entrance of our community and see me every day. At first, I had no choice but to walk past her. After all, if I took two quick steps, she couldn't keep up. Once I was far enough away, she would sit down on the ground and shout that I had knocked someone over and was trying to run away.
People around would glance over; although they didn't take any action, their eyes were full of condemnation towards me. I knew that explaining wouldn't help, so I tried to avoid such situations by leaving through the back entrance of the community. But after doing this several times, when my mother-in-law didn't see me at the front gate, she discovered the existence of the back gate and went to the Management Office of the community to cause a scene, claiming that their decision to open the back gate was outrageous.
The community manager thought it was an inside resident who had been giving my mother-in-law a hard time and asked her for her specific address. When she couldn't provide one, the manager realized she didn't live there. My mother-in-law stubbornly reported my name, saying she was my mother-in-law.
That's how the manager found me and explained the situation. Upon hearing it, I exploded with anger and quickly stated that I had nothing to do with that old woman; she was purely slandering me. Seeing my anger, the manager admitted that they had been somewhat negligent in their duties and promised to handle the matter properly before carefully apologizing and leaving my home.
My mother saw everything clearly and immediately asked what had happened. She could tell from the manager's description that it was my mother-in-law and questioned why she was still trying to find me by any means possible. Before I could answer, I heard keys in the door; looking over, it was my dad coming home.
"Why are you back so late today? Did you work overtime? Do you want something to eat? There's still some food left; I'll heat it up for you."
My mom stood up to heat food for my dad, but he stopped her and looked at me: "Zhuang Jun, come here for a moment."
My mom glanced between us while I gave her a reassuring look before following my dad into his study. As soon as we entered, he asked me.
"Do you know your mother-in-law has been coming around these past few days?"
I was taken aback; it turned out my dad had encountered her too. I had been wondering why my mother-in-law's gaze seemed off lately. Besides, both my parents have ordinary looks; from a distance, they wouldn't be recognizable. Since my mom's schedule isn't fixed due to not working, she probably wouldn't run into her. Yet somehow, my dad did.
"I know; I've been avoiding her and don't plan on meeting her," I admitted honestly.
My dad nodded: "You don't have to see her; I'll handle this matter. Your mom will probably find out soon enough. I'll talk to her about it. You might want to stay near your company for now and not come back until this trouble passes."
I understood what he meant—he wanted to resolve everything before letting me return home. My eyes felt warm: "No need for that, Dad. If she doesn't see me, she'll definitely keep trying. I'll go meet her and clarify things; nothing will happen."
My dad frowned, looking very concerned: "Then I'll go with you; you can't go alone."
The last incident left both me and my dad feeling uneasy, so this time I agreed to come along. Two people are better than one, even though I don't think my mother-in-law poses any threat to me. But I had thought the same about Wang Xu before, and look what happened.
When my dad and I suddenly approached, my mother-in-law's face was filled with surprise. Perhaps she didn't expect me to take the initiative to find her. She stared at me for a while without saying a word.
"You came to find me for something, so just say it. Once you're done, don't come back. It won't be good for either of us."
My mother-in-law sneered, seemingly wanting to say something, but after glancing at my dad standing behind me, she softened her tone. The fact that her words lacked sarcasm was already quite valuable.
"I came to talk to you about my son."
I knew that was the case; she had nothing else to discuss with me.
"It's useless for you to come to me about your son. The police are handling it. I neither reported him nor arrested him, so talking to me won't change anything. Besides, he really did cause me harm; no matter the outcome, he deserves it."
My mother-in-law became increasingly agitated. "How is that fair? You have no evidence against him! What did my son do that landed him in detention? It's all a misunderstanding! Just go tell the police, and it will all be fine!"
I chuckled lightly. "Why should I go talk to the police? I wasn't the only one who witnessed what happened; the police recorded other people's testimonies as evidence. On the surface, I wasn't injured, but how can you determine the mental harm I suffered? Who can walk away unscathed from such a situation? Auntie, I'm not heartless; I'm a person with feelings."
My dad's arm wrapped around my shoulder tightened as he listened to me speak. In his warm embrace, I felt his strength supporting me—much more than if I were alone.
Perhaps hearing me call her "Auntie" infuriated my mother-in-law. She hesitated, unsure of what to say next, but eventually returned to the same issue.
"Anyway, you have nothing going on right now. Considering you spent three years with the Wang Family, just help get my son out of there. Let's not dwell on past grievances; what do you think?"
My dad seemed too angry to remain silent any longer.
"This is a legal matter. Your son committed intentional harm; it's not something you can just brush off with words. The situation is serious."
As my dad spoke, my mother-in-law finally turned her gaze toward him. After thinking for a moment, her eyes lit up: "In-law, aren't you a police officer? Why don't you talk things over there and help get Wang Xu out?"
My dad snorted coldly, "I don't have that right, and besides, don't throw around titles carelessly."
My mother-in-law pursed her lips and muttered a couple of things I couldn't quite hear. In the end, she still directed her anger at me. I suppose the reason she does this every time is that I've been treated like a soft persimmon for too long, allowing her to act so recklessly now.
"Zhuang Jun, we were once family. How can you just stand by and watch Wang Xu go in without doing anything? Isn't that too much? Aren't you afraid of what others will say?"
"Hmph, if I really let it go like this, then I'd be worried about what others might say behind my back."
My mother-in-law became anxious. "Alright, alright. I see you're not budging. Just tell me what you want. Name your conditions, and we can discuss it."
Conditions!?
I couldn't help but laugh in disbelief. My mother-in-law looked at me as if she had played her last card. She seemed to think that this tactic would surely achieve her goal and have a certain effect. Ultimately, she still believed I was someone who sought fame and fortune, someone who coveted their family's wealth.
I found her words annoying to hear but didn't let them bother me.
"I don't want anything, so I can't offer any conditions. The Wang Family has nothing I desire, so there's no deal here. You should head back; it's getting late, and the weather hasn't been great lately. Take care of yourself at your age; let's leave it at that."
I pulled my dad and tried to walk away. Spending so much time with her was just to prevent her from continuing to disrupt my life. If she chose to act however she wanted outside her own home, it was none of my concern.
I've said all I needed to say; how she interprets it is her business.
Perhaps our turning away triggered something in my mother-in-law's frail nerves because she suddenly shouted in a frenzied scream: "Zhuang Jun, you vixen! You seduced my son and turned our family into this mess, yet you shamelessly want to shirk responsibility! You're truly outrageous!"
My dad's face turned pale with anger, and he was about to turn back to argue with her. Seeing that he looked ready to confront her physically, I quickly grabbed him to calm him down.
I had heard such sharp and bitter words from my mother-in-law before; they went in one ear and out the other as if nothing had happened. But my dad rarely encountered such situations. Hearing my mother-in-law slander me like that naturally made him furious.
"Shut your mouth! Do you believe I won't take you in there for a couple of days?"
My father's threats, when heard by my mother-in-law, took on a different meaning: "Alright, alright! Look at you, abusing your power to bring me in but not taking my son out. You admit it, don't you? I'm going to report you!"
"Fine, go ahead and hurry up. Don't linger here. Do you know the address? I'll write it down for you so you can go right now. If your complaint fails, it's because you're incompetent!"
My father was also unwilling to back down, arguing back. I pulled him aside; after all, both of them were about to retire. It was inappropriate for them to make a scene over this matter, which was essentially mine. I was already grown up; why should I add trouble for my father?
"Alright, alright! The officials are oppressing the people! Everyone come and see! The police are abusing their power to kill! The police think they're so great that they can kill at will!"
It started again, reminiscent of what had happened earlier at the door. I had seen my mother-in-law's shameless behavior many times before, and with my father here now, it made my headache worse.
"Enough already! No matter how much you shout, it won't help. I'll do my best; if it works out, great. If not, there's nothing I can do."
Suddenly, my mother-in-law fell silent, her glasses gleaming: "Are you serious?"
I nodded, secretly calculating that if I could just get through this moment, I could trick her for now.
My mother-in-law seemed satisfied: "Alright then, I'll wait for you at the door tomorrow morning. Hurry up and come out—eight o'clock! No, seven o'clock!"
