"What did you say?"
"Send the child to Grandma?"
"Are you crazy?"
"Grandma is so old, how can she take care of a child?"
"Then why not just hire a nanny?"
Aunt Shiyu was emotionally agitated; she could hardly believe that Chen Donglai would say such a thing. She simply could not accept it. However, one sentence from Chen Donglai pulled her back to reality.
"What do you want me to do?"
"The child cannot be ignored!"
Yes, the child cannot be neglected. But she also cannot be handed over to someone else! I reached out and hugged Aunt Shiyu's thigh, gently rubbing against her.
"Mom, please don't be angry, okay?"
"Ling'er doesn't want you to be upset."
Aunt Shiyu squatted down and stroked my head.
"Good child, Mommy is not angry."
"Mommy just..."
She glanced at Chen Donglai, her expression pained.
"Just feels a bit hurt inside and can't express it."
Those wounds are the pains that Mommy will never be able to let go of. They will follow her throughout her life, affecting her emotions and making it impossible for her to bear it again. I gently patted her back in an attempt to soothe her, like comforting a small child.
After a long time, Aunt Shiyu's emotions gradually calmed down. She looked at Chen Donglai with a serene gaze.
"Anyway, I must take care of Ling'er."
"If you disagree, then I will take her away."
"You choose."
Chen Donglai was completely flustered. He anxiously paced in circles.
"No, Shi Yu, we are engaged! You can't just leave like that!"
"Then what do you suggest we do?"
Chen Donglai was taken aback. He had no solution. Suddenly, he slapped his forehead and came up with an idea.
"I've got it!"
He ran over and squatted down in front of me.
"You call me Dad."
I shook my head.
"I'm not calling you that."
He widened his eyes.
"Why won't you call me that?"
I timidly replied, "You're not my dad."
Chen Donglai was on the verge of losing it.
"How could I not be your dad?"
"Look, you're a child, and a child's dad is an adult."
"I am an adult, so I am your dad!"
What kind of logic is this? It feels a bit forced, doesn't it?
Chen Donglai continued, "As long as you call me Dad, I'll bring your mom back!"
My eyes lit up.
"Really?"
Chen Donglai nodded.
"Really!"
I immediately shouted, "Dad!"
Chen Donglai nodded in satisfaction.
"Good, give Mommy another kiss!"
I wrapped my arms around Aunt Shiyu's neck and kissed her on the cheek.
Aunt Shiyu's expression softened a lot.
Chen Donglai finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Wife, please don't be angry anymore, okay?"
"It was all my fault just now."
"I apologize to you!"
Aunt Shiyu huffed.
"That's more like it."
Chen Donglai took me from Aunt Shiyu's arms.
"I'll take the child to bed first, wait for me a moment."
I wrapped my arms around Chen Donglai's neck and walked with him toward my room.
On the way, I whispered to him, "Dad, please take me to the orphanage."
Chen Donglai looked at me in confusion.
"Why?"
I lowered my head.
"Ling'er is an uninvited guest."
"Ling'er doesn't want to disrupt Daddy and Mommy."
Chen Donglai gently rubbed my nose.
"Silly girl, what are you saying?"
"You don't need to worry about adult matters."
He placed me on the bed and tucked me in.
"From now on, I will be your dad, and Aunt Shiyu will be your mom."
"Okay?"
I nodded.
Chen Donglai looked at me affectionately.
"Good child, good night."
He turned off the light, closed the door, and left.
I lay in bed, feeling warm inside. From now on, I have a dad and a mom. Although Dad is quite strict, he treats Mom very well. Mom is gentle and strong. I am their child. But I still don't know my name. What should I be called? Chen Donglai walked out of the room, scratching his head in thought. What name should I give the child?
"Ling'er, it's time to get up."
"Today is an important day!"
Dad shook me awake. I rubbed my eyes and sat up.
"Dad, what is it?"
"I'm taking you to register your household!"
I blinked my eyes.
"What does registering mean?"
Dad smiled and said, "Once you register, you'll officially have a name."
My eyes lit up.
"Really? Am I going to have a name too?"
That's great! I was so happy that I danced around.
"I have a name now!"
"I have a name now!"
Dad looked at me with a smile.
"Your name is Chen Ling'er."
"Do you remember it?"
I nodded slightly.
"Chen Ling'er."
This is the first time I have had my own name since I can remember.
Although it may not be perfect, it symbolizes my identity.
From today on, I finally have a connection to this world.
I quickly got dressed, washed up, and followed my dad out of the house.
I heard Dad say that my biological mother broke something and needed to compensate for it.
I didn't care at all.
I just hoped she would stay far away from me.
Aunt Shiyu came down from upstairs, smiling as she picked me up and kissed me on the cheek.
"Our Ling'er is truly the cutest child in the world!"
I shyly smiled back.
"Good morning, Mom."
"Today, I will need to trouble you."
Aunt Shiyu said with a smile, "It's no trouble at all."
"Being able to take our Ling'er with me is a blessing!"
I couldn't help but laugh.
It felt like a feather was gently tickling my heart.
So ticklish.
So happy.
Dad drove us out.
On the way, he received a phone call from someone.
"Bro, have you guys left yet?"
"Just left, what's up?"
"I'm over by the kindergarten; you can come straight here."
"Okay."
Dad hung up the phone and focused on driving.
Aunt Shiyu suddenly asked, "Why did he go to pick up Ling'er?"
Dad explained, "He said he and Ling'er share a similar fate; they are both illegitimate children."
"He was raised by Great-Grandmother since he was little, so he knows how to take care of Ling'er."
Aunt Shiyu snorted.
"Hmph, who needs him to meddle?"
Dad smiled and said, "He's the younger brother; it's only right for him to help."
Aunt Shiyu didn't respond.
However, her expression seemed a bit shaken, as if she was pondering something.
After a while, she asked, "Are you planning to send Ling'er to kindergarten?"
Dad nodded.
"Well, both Shi Yu and I have to work; we don't have time to take care of her."
"I can't leave Great-Grandmother alone at home; I'm worried."
"If we send her to kindergarten, Mukuya can help us look after her."
Aunt Shiyu shot him a glare.
"You really know how to calculate things."
"Your own child, and you want someone else to take care of her."
Dad chuckled.
"There's no other way."
"You won't quit your job."
Aunt Shiyu fell silent.
The car stopped in front of the kindergarten.
A young man walked over with a smile.
"Is this my little niece?"
"She’s really adorable!"
I hid behind Aunt Shiyu and peeked at him.
Dad picked me up and smiled at him, saying, "Ling'er, quickly greet your uncle."
I softly called out, "Uncle."
He happily took me into his arms.
"Little Ling, you are so good."
"From now on, I will be your uncle."
"If anyone dares to bully you, just tell your uncle, and he will take care of them!"
I nodded.
"Thank you, Uncle."
He smiled as he sent me into the kindergarten.
I waved my little hand and said goodbye to everyone.
"Goodbye, Dad!"
"Goodbye, Mom!"
"Goodbye, Uncle!"
Aunt Shiyu looked reluctant.
"Ling'er, Mom will come to pick you up after school this afternoon."
I nodded.
"Okay."
"Mom, you should go home and rest."
"Ling'er will be strong."
Aunt Shiyu's eyes turned red.
She came over and patted my head.
"Good child."
"You are truly a little angel sent by heaven to your mom."
I smiled at her.
"Mom, Ling'er loves you."
Aunt Shiyu smiled.
Dad took her hand, and they got into the car together.
They had to hurry to a meeting.
Watching their car leave, I turned around and walked into the kindergarten.
