Following the days with Elder Mage, Van Loon not only learned the mysteries of magic, but also began an unprecedented challenge for him - learning to read. Elder Mage understood that although he could impart much knowledge to Van Loon, he also knew that one day he would not be able to satisfy Van Loon's growing thirst for knowledge. Therefore, learning how to self-study became an important skill for Van Loon in this strange world, and literacy was the key to it all.
Every day, Elder Mage would spend some time teaching Van Loon the written language of this different world. They would sit at the table in the small wooden house, Elder Mage holding a stick and writing various characters on the ground or on a wooden board, while Van Loon used his keen observation and memory to learn these strange symbols.
At first, for Van Loon, these characters were like a series of puzzles, making it difficult for him to understand the meaning behind these lines and curves. But as time passed, these symbols began to form connections in his mind, and he started to recognize some simple words and even slowly understand some simple sentences.
This process was not just a learning of knowledge for Van Loon, but also a spiritual growth. Whenever he could read a new word or understand a passage, he felt a sense of accomplishment. He knew that this learning was not just to satisfy his curiosity, but also to enable him to better survive and explore in this vast world.
In the process of learning language and writing, Van Loon also attempted a highly challenging skill for him—writing with a pen held in his mouth. Although being a sheep, he did not have fingers suitable for writing, but his determination and innovative spirit drove him to find new ways to overcome this limitation.
He first learned how to securely hold the pen with his teeth. This process was not easy, as he had to learn how to balance the weight of the pen while keeping the tip on the paper. Initially, he often struggled with the pen slipping from his mouth or the tip failing to leave a mark on the paper.
However, Van Loon did not give up. He practiced repeatedly and gradually became familiar with this special way of writing. Although his handwriting was crooked, at least it was recognizable. Every time he successfully wrote a word, his heart was filled with pride and satisfaction.
This process was not only a test of his willpower and patience, but also proof of his continuous self-challenge and improvement. Through this unique method, Van Loon gradually could record his learning experiences and thoughts in writing. Although the method was unconventional, for him, it was an important way of self-expression and learning. He knew that no matter which world he was in, as long as he had determination and creativity, he would always find a way to overcome difficulties.
In this almost year-long period, as the seasons change, Van Loon's life and learning gradually stabilize. He has personally experienced and felt the changes in the natural world, from the blossoming of spring, the heat of summer, the desolation of autumn, to the cold of winter. In this process, he not only learned a lot about the knowledge and skills of the other world, but also gained a deeper understanding of his own situation.
While learning magic, herbology, and languages, Van Loon has been quietly reflecting on his past and future. Whenever he is idle in the quiet night or during his daily work, he always thinks of the demon that binds his fate - Nightshade. Nightshade's existence and the heavy contract always linger in his mind. The debt of two thousand souls is both a heavy burden and a constant reminder of his identity and mission that he cannot forget.
Although the current life is peaceful and fulfilling, Van Loon knows that he cannot escape the demands of the night shadows forever. The burden of this contract makes him feel uneasy at all times, and it is also one of the driving forces behind his continuous learning and growth. He knows that sooner or later, he must face this reality and find his own solution. He has both anticipation and fear for this unknown future, but more than anything, he has a firm determination to bravely face whatever comes his way.
However, the peaceful days are quickly disrupted by a letter. Van Loon watches Elder Mage with a furrowed brow, feeling somewhat anxious. He knows that this letter is bound to carry important information that will cause a disturbance in their lives. Elder Mage takes a deep breath, sets the letter aside, and then slowly sits back in his chair, his eyes revealing deep concern.
Elder Mage looked at Van Loon with a hint of helplessness in his tone: "The federal is summoning me back. They want me to continue a experiment I was once involved in - a magical weapon called the Destroyer." His voice was filled with heaviness and struggle, as if this task was extremely difficult for him.
Upon hearing this, Van Loon couldn't help but feel shocked. In the year they had spent together, he had never heard Elder Mage mention his past, let alone such a deep connection with the federal. He could sense Elder Mage's hesitation and struggle with this task, as if it conflicted with his moral beliefs.
Elder Mage looked into the distance, as if recalling certain moments from the past, and then continued, "I used to be a magic scholar in the federal, participating in many significant magical studies. But when I discovered they wanted to use my research to create destructive weapons, I chose to escape. I didn't want my knowledge to be used for destruction and killing."
Van Loon listened, filled with sympathy and admiration for Elder Mage. He knew that the choices Elder Mage faced were not easy, and that such choices might also affect his own future. Van Loon stood quietly on the side, unable to express his feelings in words, but his eyes were full of support and understanding. He hoped to help Elder Mage through this difficult time in his own way.
