Chapter Nine: Reeds and Rushes
When Junxi opened her eyes, the sky was just beginning to brighten. Looking out the window, the sports field of Purple Gold Campus was bathed in the soft glow of dawn, yet there were already people jogging.
Xue Waiwai hadn’t returned all night. Junxi had called several times, but no one answered. It wasn’t until midnight that she finally called back. From her tone, it was clear she had sobered up. Impatiently, she said, “Wen Junxi says you’re clueless, and you really are addicted to being clueless. Don’t you know that every moment is precious?”
A moment?
It turned out that the Department Representative’s innocent expression was all a facade!
Alas, men are truly more difficult to understand than women.
Junxi recalled Zhou Xuanyu's inscrutable expression when they parted last night. He hadn’t shown any signs when she called him “Xuan Yu Uncle,” nor had he seemed embarrassed when she exposed his fear of cats.
She stubbornly decided to wait for his response.
He ignored her completely and raised an eyebrow at the approaching Dormitory Supervisor. “Aren’t you going in? Do you want me to witness what it’s like for Tang Seng to chant?”
The Mathematics Department’s Department Representative was just a rookie who knew how to cover his tracks; how much more so for a man like Zhou Xuanyu, who had long since mastered the art of navigating the complexities of romance and life?
He was so meticulous that how could a girl like her, who had never even been in a serious relationship, see through him?
Forget it, forget it.
...
The school semester had already ended, and the other girls in the dormitory had gradually moved out for their internships, leaving only her and Xue Waiwai holding down the fort. With Xue Waiwai gone, the entire room felt empty and quiet.
She went to the bathroom to freshen up, contemplating that since she had no classes or part-time jobs today, she could go back and see her younger brother. It had been a long time since she last visited; for the sake of making a living, she spent more time with other people's children than with her own brother.
Her phone, resting on the bed, buzzed with a "zizizizi" sound. It was an unfamiliar number calling Junxi.
She answered it, and on the other end was a woman with a gentle tone who immediately called her name. She responded, and only then did the caller introduce herself.
She said she was Galen, the manager of the Human Resources Department at Hengfu Group, calling to inform her that she needed to report to the company tomorrow.
The news came too quickly and unexpectedly. Junxi was stunned for a few seconds before remembering to thank her.
Galen laughed warmly on the other end and casually reminded her of the documents she needed to bring and some important notes for reporting. At the end of the call, she even apologized for calling so early because she had to catch a flight abroad, hoping she hadn’t disturbed Junxi's sweet dreams.
The caller's excessive politeness left Junxi feeling surprised and flattered.
However, it was ultimately good news.
Junxi held her phone, excitedly pacing around the room, contemplating who to share the good news with first. In the end, she typed a message and sent it to both Xue Waiwai and Zhou Ziyan.
Almost immediately, a reply from Zhou Ziyan came through: "So does that mean you should treat us to dinner?"
The message ended with a period; Zhou Ziyan was not one to use question marks often. Even if the decision wasn’t his to make, he had a habit of taking charge.
Junxi called him up. Zhou Ziyan hadn’t gotten out of bed yet and complained in a nasal voice that she wasn’t a rooster and wondered why she was waking him up so early.
In a good mood, Junxi decided not to argue with him and simply said, "Zhou Ziyan, there's no time like the present. Let's set dinner for tonight. I’ll pick up Wen Xuan, and the three of us will go together."
Zhou Ziyan grumbled, "Can’t it just be the two of us?"
"Who wants to be in a two-person world with you! Eat or don’t eat!"
"Eat, eat, eat!"
