Chapter Thirteen: Reeds and Rushes
Amidst the bustling crowd, Zhou Xuanyu's deep voice carried a weight reminiscent of the passage of time.
Junxi looked up, "So you still remember me."
Zhou Xuanyu lowered his gaze, her starry eyes shimmering with a warm smile. Despite her injuries, she seemed to have gained something precious.
Of course he remembered her—the girl with short hair that barely brushed her ears, who always looked up at others. She was afraid of the dark during power outages and would light candles to avoid burning down the old house. She would refuse injections because she feared the pain, leading to a whole entourage of private doctors… that proud and willful young lady of the Wen Family, Wen Junxi…
The memories were so vivid that he felt as if he no longer knew her.
The girl before him now had shoulder-length hair, her gaze calm and warm. She no longer feared the dark or pain; it seemed she could handle anything on her own…
"Look, let's wait over there," she said.
While Zhou Xuanyu was lost in thought, Junxi had already grabbed a number and pointed toward the seats in the corridor. In high spirits, she walked over and claimed two spots.
"Come sit for a while; we’ll be waiting for a long time."
Zhou Xuanyu didn’t sit down but asked her, "Are you hungry?"
Despite the earlier chaos, he had noticed that her plate of steak remained almost untouched.
"I'm okay," she replied.
Just as she finished speaking, her stomach betrayed her with a loud growl.
Junxi felt embarrassed, but saw Zhou Xuanyu's lips curl into a smile.
"I'll go buy something to eat. You just sit here and wait for me."
With that, Zhou Xuanyu turned and walked outside. The wind was strong that evening, and as he reached the door, he instinctively tightened his coat. In truth, he wanted to step out to clear his mind.
Why? Why had he suddenly said that to her?
The phone in his coat rang just at that moment.
It was Zhou Ziyan.
The situation on Zhou Ziyan's end seemed to have settled down; the unusual silence only highlighted his restlessness.
“Damn it, my predecessor from eight hundred years ago comes back to haunt me, and I can't even remember her name! Little Uncle, you really need to keep your eyes peeled from now on. Don't go looking for difficult women... Hey, is Junxi with you?”
“Yeah, she's at the hospital.”
“She’s okay, right?”
“Just checking her wound; she should be fine.”
Zhou Ziyan sighed, “Alright, I owe you one tonight. I won’t come over then. I'm all wet and sticky; I need to go home and take a shower to wash off this bad luck…”
The call ended.
Zhou Xuanyu glanced at his phone; it had run out of battery.
There were many snacks outside the hospital, so he casually bought a few. When he returned, Junxi was no longer there. The two seats were occupied by strangers he didn’t recognize.
He casually stopped a nurse, but before he could ask anything, she pointed toward the deepest part of the corridor. “Sir, you must be looking for that beautiful girl in Room 28. She went in for a bandage and specifically asked me to tell you that if I saw you, I should let you know to wait for her outside for a bit.”
“Thank you.”
The nurse smiled. “You’re welcome. Your girlfriend is very cute; she said that when she walks in later, the most handsome one will be you. Turns out she wasn’t just bragging…”
The nurse walked away, leaving behind only laughter.
Girlfriend… girlfriend?
He waited for a while, but she still hadn’t come out. The steamed cake he bought for her was steaming hot in the bag, and his hand holding it felt increasingly warm as his impatience grew.
Unable to wait any longer, he walked to the door of the bandaging room. Just as he was about to push the door open, he heard her screaming from inside.
"Ow! Ow! Brother, be gentle!"
The doctor, holding his throat, asked her how she could not bear such a little pain.
She chuckled good-naturedly and said that she used to be even less tolerant of pain, but over the years, she had made quite a bit of progress.
The doctor then asked her how she had improved.
She paused for a few seconds, pretending to be relaxed, and said, "I just got used to it."
"Then I'll help you improve even faster..."
"No need... Oh!" She exclaimed in surprise.
Zhou Xuanyu quickly pushed the door open.
"Xuan Yu Uncle, help me!"
He frowned as he noticed the white-coated doctor, his forehead creased with deep lines...
Why was she calling someone like this brother but referring to him as uncle?
Zhou Xuanyu calmly stepped back outside...
