Chapter Fourteen: Reeds and Rushes
Junxi emerged after finishing the bandaging. Zhou Xuanyu was standing by the window in the corridor, taking a phone call. The window faced the entrance of the hospital.
She walked over and heard him say, "I see you. Come in through the door, fifth floor..."
Noticing Junxi out of the corner of his eye, he quickly changed his words, "You don't need to come up; we'll go down."
Waiting downstairs was the Infant Water Spirit. She had a bag slung over her shoulder, and a mask covered half of her face. Upon seeing Junxi, she said, "Your brother has already been sent back; don't worry."
Junxi thanked her.
She shook her head and turned to Zhou Xuanyu, removing one ear strap of her mask. She reached out and lightly hooked his arm, speaking softly, "Your car performs so well that it makes you unconsciously want to step on the gas. I wasn't even sure if I was speeding. But that road is quite remote; there shouldn't be any cameras..."
Remote?
The road to her grandmother's house was difficult to navigate but not exactly remote.
Thinking about it, women often tend to exaggerate when they are being affectionate, which was understandable.
Zhou Xuanyu let the Infant Water Spirit finish her long string of words before he nodded slightly.
Junxi followed behind them, biting into the steamed cake in her hand. The sweet, glutinous taste was something she usually enjoyed, but now that it had cooled, it was tasteless.
She wanted to go back to school by herself, but Zhou Xuanyu insisted on seeing her home.
The Infant Water Spirit chimed in from the side, "It's not safe for a girl to be out alone at night. Have you seen all those news reports about female college students going missing recently?"
Unable to refuse their kind intentions, she reluctantly accepted their company despite her dislike of being a third wheel.
Once they got into the car, the Infant Water Spirit sat sideways in the passenger seat, making a phone call. It seemed to be her agent arranging her schedule for the next few days. She appeared disinterested, merely playing with her long hair and responding with "mm-hmm" every now and then.
"I remember now," the Infant Water Spirit suddenly turned to Junxi, covering the receiver with her hand. "Two years ago, I had a lecture at Purple Gold, and you were the host, right?"
The sudden recognition took Junxi by surprise, but she smiled and nodded. "Yes, it was thanks to your help that I was able to complete my task smoothly."
"Oh, that was nothing. Your department head told me that your family was going through tough times and needed that grant to make ends meet..."
The Infant Water Spirit shifted the conversation to Junxi's past financial struggles.
Junxi responded with a light "mm," falling silent afterward.
Zhou Xuanyu tightened his grip on the steering wheel and glanced in the rearview mirror. The slender figure was enveloped in shadow, and the city lights filtered through the car window onto her face, illuminating the embarrassment etched between her brows.
"Water Spirit, I'll take you home first," Zhou Xuanyu said.
The Infant Water Spirit glanced at Zhou Xuanyu, whose serious expression reminded her that her previous words had been biased and impolite.
She froze for a moment, feeling a bit uncomfortable, but quickly apologized.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way."
Junxi had already adjusted her emotions. She looked up, her smile seemingly radiant. "You're right, and there's no need to apologize. At that time, I really needed money, and I still do now. After all, needing money is not something to be ashamed of."
The Infant Water Spirit remained noncommittal and did not take the opportunity to end the topic.
"If you're in trouble, you can talk to me. I'm already involved in charity, supporting a student in need; it's just a small effort..."
Zhou Xuanyu's car suddenly came to a halt, interrupting her words.
"We've arrived."
