Chapter Sixteen: Reeds and Rushes
The next day, rain began to fall, a continuous autumn drizzle that chilled to the bone.
Junxi got up early, took the subway, and transferred buses twice before finally arriving at Hengfu Group to report for duty. Galen was still away on a business trip, and it was Galen's assistant, Xiaolin Fang, who arranged her onboarding.
Xiaolin Fang was a friendly girl, particularly warm-hearted towards others.
Junxi casually asked where her desk was, and Xiaolin Fang proceeded to introduce her to more than twenty people in the office, one by one. When it came to the new president, she couldn't help but speak even more enthusiastically.
"Don't be fooled by Mr. Zhou's cold demeanor; he's actually a really good person."
"How do you know that?"
"Of course I know."
Xiaolin Fang smiled modestly, her reserved demeanor leaving Junxi feeling somewhat at a loss. She decided not to ask further, but Xiaolin Fang couldn't help but continue.
"During yesterday's meeting, I had an allergy attack and sneezed several times. Mr. Zhou didn't say anything at the time, but when the meeting ended, he specifically reminded everyone that the weather was getting cooler and to be careful of catching a cold."
Specifically reminding everyone...
Junxi did not expose anything. When a young girl is in love, she often mistakes unintentional actions for deliberate ones; after all, she was the same way.
"Why haven't I seen Mr. Zhou? Is he out?" Junxi pretended to be nonchalant as she glanced around. The curtains in the President's Office were not drawn, revealing an empty room inside.
"Mr. Zhou's schedule is something we little folks can't know," Xiaolin Fang replied, casually pointing to the desk by the window. "There it is, your spot. A prime location, you know? So many people are envious of it!"
Just as Junxi was about to ask why it was a prime location, she looked up and realized that this position faced Zhou Xuanyu's office, and everything clicked into place.
After going through the onboarding process and completing all the formalities, it was already time for lunch.
Xiaolin Fang took care of her and specifically came over to say she would take her to the upscale restaurant on the 15th floor for a taste of luxury. Just then, Zhou Ziyan's call disrupted their plans.
Junxi signaled for Xiaolin Fang to go ahead and eat; she couldn't afford to ignore this important call.
Zhou Ziyan was calling to apologize for what happened with the Red-Dressed Woman yesterday. He insisted on taking Junxi out for lunch to show his sincerity.
Junxi declined.
He persisted, "I'm already downstairs at the company."
This man always prioritized his own actions over others' plans.
Reluctantly, Junxi went downstairs. Just as she stepped out of the elevator, she received a text message from Zhou Ziyan.
"Turn left when you go out, black Cayenne, I'll be waiting for you in the car."
She glanced through the glass of the hall and indeed saw a Cayenne parked to the left of the entrance. The dark body and tinted windows made it impossible to see inside from the outside.
Zhou Ziyan was sensible enough to stay hidden in the car to avoid drawing attention.
Junxi jogged over and opened the back door.
"Why did you change cars again?"
She muttered as she settled in, only to realize there was more than one person inside.
Zhou Ziyan was sitting in the passenger seat, while the driver was Zhou Xuanyu.
Seeing her in a daze, Zhou Ziyan laughed heartily, "You're such a busybody! My uncle changes cars and you have to comment on it."
Junxi felt embarrassed; how was she supposed to know this was Zhou Xuanyu's car?
Zhou Xuanyu remained expressionless, glancing at her through the rearview mirror before getting straight to the point. "What do you want to eat?"
