Chapter 26: The Dew of White Dew
The vendor spoke of difficulties, yet his movements were swift and fluid.
The crowd pressed her closer to him; her hand brushed against his, then quickly withdrew. Moments later, it touched his again. She decided to step aside, allowing the parents holding children to move forward. He remained still, whether out of interest or simply patience was unclear.
As more onlookers gathered, she felt herself drifting further away from him.
"Alright!" The vendor lifted the bamboo skewer, as if a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
Zhou Xuanyu took it and turned to look for her.
Junxi had unknowingly been pushed to the outer edge; he didn't see her at first and paused in confusion.
The vendor teased, "Sir, look at you, not even keeping an eye on your little one."
Laughter erupted among the crowd, and he couldn't help but smile. Just then, she squeezed back through the throng, raising her eyebrows with a cheerful smile as she asked him, "Is it ready?"
The Flower Basket spun in his hand before he passed it to her. He paid while she eagerly extended her little tongue toward it, only to pull back shyly before she could taste it.
Zhou Xuanyu emerged from the crowd with her.
She admired the exquisitely crafted Flower Basket in her hands and suddenly said, "This is actually the first time I've received flowers."
She was serious, not joking at all. He was somewhat surprised; did young boys no longer give flowers when pursuing girls?
"So you don't want to eat it?"
"I want it to last a little longer."
She held the bamboo skewer like a proud yet timid child.
He averted his gaze and walked silently beside her.
"How did you get here?" she seemed to remember something.
"I was eating nearby."
"Then why did you come out?"
"I came out to get some fresh air."
She touched the tip of her nose. "You had a drink, didn't you?"
Zhou Xuanyu nodded at her confident expression.
To him, she looked like a little adult now.
Thinking back, she had always been like a little adult. From a young age, she would speak with a maturity beyond her years and loved to comment on the women around him.
"Zhou Xuanyu, can't you make your girlfriend dress better? Aren't you afraid Zhou Ziyan will get jealous?"
"Zhou Xuanyu, is this woman dealing drugs? Just look at her face."
"Zhou Xuanyu, if your girlfriend could speak properly, I wouldn't get goosebumps every time."
Zhou Xuanyu... back then, she never called him 'uncle.'
At that time, she was always so bold and arrogant, pointing fingers and making sharp comments. The women around him would leave one after another because of her, but he enjoyed indulging her.
Eventually, he found someone she could tolerate...
The band in the square was playing the last encore song, "Just One Last Dance." It wasn't a new song, but sung by a male voice, it felt heart-wrenching.
The dancers gradually stopped and listened quietly.
Her footsteps slowed down, becoming slower and slower until she finally stopped, as if something had pricked at her heart, her gaze flickering.
Zhou Xuanyu followed her, guessing what might be on her mind, so he chose not to ask.
As the music came to an end, the band bowed, and the crowd began to disperse.
She gradually composed herself and turned to Zhou Xuanyu, raising the Flower Basket in her hand and saying, "I have to go back. Thank you for the candy."
Zhou Xuanyu naturally wouldn't let her leave just like that; he stopped her.
"How do you want to thank me?"
"Huh?"
She clearly hadn't expected Zhou Xuanyu to ask that, and she was momentarily taken aback.
Zhou Xuanyu had his hands in his pockets, calmly waiting for her response.
After a while, she smiled mischievously and said, "It's just a piece of candy; it doesn't mean I have to pledge myself to you, right?"
Zhou Xuanyu shook his head. "You could also perform without selling yourself."
