Chapter 44: The Mountain Has Trees 4
The library of Yigao is located on the eighth floor of the Information Building. Since the elevator has just been replaced and is still in the debugging phase, Junxi can only take the stairs. She leans against the wall and climbs to the eighth floor, feeling the swelling pain in her ankle intensify, but she has no time to worry about herself.
The library is quiet. Standing outside, she quickly spots her brother, Jun Xuan, by the window. He has a stack of papers beside him but appears to be distracted. After a moment, as if sensing her gaze, he turns his head to look at her.
Junxi waves to her brother.
Jun Xuan gently pushes his chair back and stands up, walking around two rows of bookshelves to reach the door.
"I knew you would come find me," he says, pressing his thin lips together, his hands awkwardly shoved into his pockets as he leans against the doorframe.
Seeing her brother's evasive demeanor, Junxi furrows her brow.
"Did you get into a fight?" she asks, sounding calmer than she expected.
"Jie..."
"I'm asking you a question. Just answer yes or no."
Jun Xuan looks defeated and nods slightly.
"Why did you fight?"
"There's no reason, I just did it." Jun Xuan said nonchalantly, a demeanor he rarely displayed, making it all the more unusual.
Junxi pressed her forehead, a surge of anger rising to her head. Whenever she got angry, her face would flush.
"What kind of attitude is that? Who taught you to speak like this?"
"Calm down, sis. This is a library." He pointed to the enormous character for "Silence" in the corridor, his tone suggesting that Junxi was the one in the wrong.
Taking a deep breath, Junxi pulled Jun Xuan into the hallway.
"What happened to your leg?" Jun Xuan asked, noticing his sister limping and immediately grasping her arm.
"Don't worry about me." Junxi shook off Jun Xuan's grip. "Do you realize that because of fighting, you might get kicked out of the school dormitory?"
Jun Xuan's gaze flickered for a moment, but he remained stubborn. "If I can't stay there, then I won't."
"Where do you plan to live then? Grandma went back to the countryside last week. Are you expecting her to come back and take care of you?"
"If you lend me some money, I can rent a place and take care of myself."
"Wen Junxuan, when did you become so willful?"
Junxi felt a lump in her throat, tears nearly spilling from her eyes.
In the past, no matter how difficult things became, she would never easily shed tears. But at this moment, she simply couldn't hold back.
"Big sister..." Jun Xuan looked at Junxi's reddened eyes and nose, feeling a bit at a loss. He pressed a hand on Junxi's shoulder and gently rubbed it a few times. "Don't be like this. Can't I take back what I just said?"
"Then tell me, why did you get into a fight?"
"I..." He turned his head away. "I don't want to say."
"Are you starting to keep secrets from me now?"
"Big sister, it's not like that. I'm just afraid it will upset you." Jun Xuan sighed, revealing a hint of sorrow that didn't match his age. After a few seconds of silence, he chose to be honest. "That guy said our parents are corrupt officials. But I know they aren't... They aren't, right?"
Jun Xuan looked at Junxi with urgency, as if he needed to hear her say something reassuring.
Junxi was taken aback, the anger trapped in her chest brewing a mix of emotions.
"Yes, they aren't. They are innocent," she said firmly.
Jun Xuan smiled, his eyes shining brightly.
"So, I won't let those people spread their lies."
