Chapter Forty-Nine: The Mountain Has Trees
Although the accommodation issue was resolved, Junxi's plan to rent a house outside remained unchanged.
On the weekend, she took Jun Xuan with her to look at houses. On the way, they talked about the previous fight, and Junxi learned that not only had the school revoked Jun Xuan's punishment, but they had also arranged for him to stay in another dormitory. From then on, Jun Xuan would no longer have to face the bullying son of the Deputy Secretary and his gang of followers.
Handling matters with such meticulous care was Zhou Xuanyu's style.
"Big sister, who is so impressive? The principal has never spoken so kindly to anyone. Do you know? He even came to find me later and asked if I was satisfied with how things were handled."
"And are you satisfied?"
"Of course I'm satisfied." Jun Xuan smiled, casually touching his nose before asking, "It must be Uncle Xuan Yu, right?"
Junxi glanced at her brother; his gaze was very certain.
"You remember him?"
"Yeah, I remember."
Of course he remembered. Although he was young when that person left, he had been too naive to understand what was happening at home. Yet every word Zhou Xuanyu had said remained etched in his memory.
He placed a hand on his shoulder and told him, "From today onward, you must protect your sister like a man."
...
Junxi's new place was by the East River. Although it was in the city, it only took a few minutes to walk to the subway that went directly to Hengfu Group. Overall, it was much more convenient than living at school.
The landlord was a middle-aged woman who was eager to travel abroad and hoped that Junxi could move in within the next few days. Aside from the rushed timeline, everything else was acceptable for the siblings.
However, as Jun Xuan put it, since they had to move anyway, they might as well do it sooner rather than later.
After returning home, Junxi began packing. There wasn't much to take from school, and since her dormitory rights extended until after the graduation ceremony next summer, she didn't need to move everything out at once; she could come back anytime to retrieve her things.
Just as she was in the midst of packing energetically, Zhou Ziyan's call came in.
This guy had been out of touch for over a week, and if he didn't reach out soon, Junxi would start to wonder if he had blasted off into space.
Zhou Ziyan had a competition tomorrow. Although he had been rambling on about various things, Junxi knew he was actually nervous. He had always been this way; whenever he got anxious, he liked to pick fights or bicker with her.
In the game of winners and losers, sometimes the stakes couldn't be brushed off as lightly as one might claim. Junxi didn't know how to comfort him or help him relax, so she could only set aside her own tasks and engage in casual conversation with him.
Eventually, they reached a point where there was nothing left to discuss. He finally remembered to ask her, "What are you doing?"
"Packing up my things and getting ready to move."
He casually asked where the house was rented and what the conditions were like. Junxi answered, surprisingly not saying a single word of complaint.
It was rare for them to have such a calm conversation.
Perhaps this is what distance does—creates beauty.
In the end, Zhou Ziyan sentimentally remarked, "If only I were there."
"What difference would it make if you were?"
"I could help you move. You’re a woman; it’s not right for you to be without a man around..."
"Save your breath. And stop bothering your uncle to take care of me. I'm not a three-year-old child."
Zhou Ziyan fell silent for a few seconds before responding, "When have I ever bothered my uncle to take care of you...?"
Suddenly, a sound came from the doorway.
