She was now sitting with Shen Yunchong, and what did that mean in Zhou Xuanyu's eyes?
"Um..."
"Alright, I won't disturb your meal any longer."
Junxi had just opened her mouth to speak when Zhou Xuanyu interrupted her directly. He nodded at Shen Yunchong, maintaining the last bit of decorum, and turned to leave.
"This uncle is really handsome," Minya commented softly.
Shen Yunchong patted her head, not feeling jealous; he merely said thoughtfully, "He is indeed quite a handsome man."
Junxi watched Zhou Xuanyu walk out of the restaurant. There were many people waiting for him outside; as soon as he stepped out, they surrounded him, laughing and chatting. In the blink of an eye, both he and his car disappeared from sight.
After finishing their meal, Shen Yunchong offered to take Junxi and Xue Waiwai back.
Junxi insisted it wasn't necessary, but in the end, since Minya had fallen asleep, Shen Yunchong did not press the matter further.
The last bus was just coming into view from a distance.
"Come on, let's hurry!" Junxi pulled Xue Waiwai along and waved quickly at Shen Yunchong.
"Slow down," Xue Waiwai hurriedly followed behind.
Shen Yunchong stood still, holding Minya in his arms, a smile unconsciously spreading across his lips. It had been a long time since a woman had acted so freely in front of him.
"Ah, it's really special," Wen Junxi said.
Junxi and Xue Waiwai often rushed to catch the bus together during their university days. Now that work had separated them, holding hands to chase a bus felt particularly meaningful.
Since it was a night bus, there weren't many people on board. The two of them sat side by side at the back, quietly chatting, as if the bustling city had nothing to do with them.
"I'll stay over at your place tonight," Xue Waiwai said, clinging to Junxi's arm.
"What's up? What did Gao Yuan say when he called you earlier?"
Xue Waiwai sighed softly. "He said he has to work late and might even pull an all-nighter, so he told me to go to bed early."
"Does he do this often?"
"Recently, it's been happening more frequently. But I understand; we just graduated, and we have less experience than others. If we don't work harder than everyone else, how can we establish ourselves in this society?"
Junxi patted Xue Waiwai's forehead. "It's great that you can think like this. Gao Yuan is lucky to have such an understanding woman like you."
Xue Waiwai smiled. "He better cherish it; I haven't seen him show any appreciation for me."
"Feelings need to be experienced personally."
Xue Waiwai rested her head on Junxi's shoulder, gazing out the window in silence.
Junxi glanced at her watch; it was late, and she feared tomorrow morning would bring another round of torment.
“Hey!” Xue Waiwai suddenly broke away from Junxi and jumped up from the back seat.
“What’s wrong?” Junxi asked.
Xue Waiwai didn’t answer Junxi. She quickly ran to the front of the bus, holding onto the back of a seat for support.
“Driver, stop the bus!”
“Miss, this is a public bus, not a taxi!” the bus driver replied with annoyance.
“Xue Waiwai, what’s going on?” Junxi followed her.
“Driver, please, let me out!” Xue Waiwai pleaded, banging on the bus door.
Seeing her anxious demeanor, the driver hesitated for a moment, and fortunately, the bus had just arrived at a stop.
As soon as the doors opened, Xue Waiwai jumped off.
“What’s going on?” Junxi asked as she followed her.
“Junxi, look over there!” Xue Waiwai pointed to the entrance of a KTV. “I saw Gao Yuan go in with a woman!”
“What? You must be mistaken from this distance!”
“I would recognize him even if he turned to ashes!”
Xue Waiwai burst into the KTV lobby.
"Miss, how many people are there? Do you have a reserved room?" a staff member approached to greet them.
"Yes, Room 204 on the second floor. My friends are waiting."
"Alright, you can enter through here on the second floor. Enjoy your time," the staff member didn't suspect their purpose at all and even kindly pointed them in the right direction.
Xue Waiwai thanked them and walked inside.
"How did you know it was Room 204?" Junxi asked curiously. Could it be that she had seen something from afar that provided such information?
"I just made it up," Xue Waiwai suddenly became calm, as if she had transformed into a different person.
"What are you planning to do then?"
"I'll search room by room until I find those two scoundrels."
As she spoke, Xue Waiwai headed upstairs with a stern expression. She pushed open the first room—empty. The second room—still no luck... There was no sign of Gao Yuan anywhere on the entire second floor.
Some customers began to express their dissatisfaction with Xue Waiwai's reckless behavior, but she acted as if she hadn't heard anything and continued up to the third floor.
The third floor was reserved for VIP rooms, and security was naturally much tighter than on the second floor. As soon as Xue Waiwai casually pushed open Room 301, she was stopped by a KTV staff member.
"Miss, may I ask who you are looking for?"
"I'm looking for Gao Yuan."
"Which private room?"
"I'm not sure!" Xue Waiwai was becoming increasingly impatient.
The KTV staff noticed her confrontational attitude and immediately grabbed the walkie-talkie at his waist. "There are two women causing a scene at the entrance of Room 301. Please send security to take them away."
"Who is causing a scene?!" Xue Waiwai shouted.
"Xue Waiwai, let's just go. You might have really mistaken someone," Junxi said, not wanting to escalate the situation. She gently tugged at Xue Waiwai's arm, hoping to lead her away before security arrived to throw them out.
"I'm not leaving, and I won't be mistaken," Xue Waiwai declared as she rushed over and pushed open the door to Room 302. "Gao Yuan, come out here!"
"This young lady!" The staff was now visibly angry; it seemed that there were important guests in Room 302.
"What’s going on?"
Sure enough, a stern voice came from inside.
The KTV staff quickly stepped forward. "I'm sorry, sir, we'll resolve this immediately."
"Xue Waiwai! Don't do this!" Junxi quickly grabbed Xue Waiwai's arm.
The KTV security had already rushed over, three burly men standing shoulder to shoulder, exuding an intimidating presence that could crush the two of them with just a lift of their feet.
"Take them away, and call the police if necessary," the KTV staff said with a furrowed brow.
"I'm not going! You’re harboring those scoundrels and you think you have a right to complain? Call the police! Go ahead and call them!" Xue Waiwai shouted loudly.
As soon as Junxi heard the words "call the police," she felt a headache coming on. Zhou Ziyan had just been released from the police station, and she didn’t want her friend getting involved with that again.
"Then take them away and let the police handle it!"
"I'm sorry, don’t call the police, we’ll leave right now!" Junxi shot Xue Waiwai a glare. "Let’s go, we can settle this later!"
"I don’t want to..." Xue Waiwai suddenly burst into tears.
Junxi pressed her fingers to her temples.
"What’s going on?"
A familiar voice came from behind, and Junxi knew without turning around that it was Zhou Xuanyu.
It turned out that Zhou Xuanyu was also one of the guests in Room 302. Junxi clearly saw several hostesses sitting inside the booth...
"Mr. Zhou. I’m really sorry; we’re dealing with these two crazy women. It’ll be over soon," the KTV staff said obsequiously before turning to the security guards and raising her voice. "What are you standing there for? Are you watching a show? Get them out of here!"
The security guards immediately moved in to restrain Junxi and Xue Waiwai.
"Wait a moment." Zhou Xuanyu walked over and signaled a few security guards to loosen their grip.
The guards glanced at their supervisor.
"Let go! Can't you understand what Mr. Zhou means? Are you blind?"
The guards immediately released their hold.
"What’s going on?"
Zhou Xuanyu asked again, this time looking directly at Junxi.
Junxi blinked; she had no idea what was happening and didn't know how to explain it to Zhou Xuanyu.
Before Junxi could say anything, Xue Waiwai had already rushed over and clung to Zhou Xuanyu's arm.
"Hey, you woman!"
A staff member stepped forward to pull Xue Waiwai away, but was stopped by Zhou Xuanyu.
"Mr. Zhou, can you help me? I'm looking for someone."
"Who are you looking for?" Zhou Xuanyu asked patiently.
"My boyfriend. I saw him come in with another woman," Xue Waiwai said, her voice trembling as she spoke.
Zhou Xuanyu did not expect it to turn out this way.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
"I'm sure," Xue Waiwai replied firmly. "I noticed something was off with him a long time ago. Junxi was still trying to convince me to trust him in the morning, but I saw him with another woman that night. How am I supposed to trust him after that?"
Zhou Xuanyu glanced at Junxi, as if the word "trust" had struck a chord within him.
"But can we check the reservation records for the private room?" Zhou Xuanyu turned to the KTV staff.
When the staff realized that the "crazy woman" he mentioned was a friend of Mr. Zhou, their attitude immediately changed.
"Of course, of course! Normally, we can't do that for just anyone, but Mr. Zhou, if you ask, we can do anything for you."
Junxi rolled her eyes. Was it really necessary to flatter him to this extent? What kind of important person was Zhou Xuanyu? Or was he just a regular here?
As soon as Zhou Xuanyu spoke, the staff sprang into action and rushed downstairs to check the registration records.
Xue Waiwai sat sobbing on the sofa in the hallway, leaving Junxi standing alone, exchanging glances with Zhou Xuanyu.
"Mr. Zhou! Aren't you coming in?" A charming voice called from inside.
Zhou Xuanyu ignored it and continued to look at Junxi.
Junxi's frustration boiled over; without even glancing at Zhou Xuanyu, she walked over to Xue Waiwai's side.
Xue Waiwai wrapped her arms tightly around Junxi's waist.
"Junxi, what should I do?" In just a short while, Xue Waiwai's voice had already become somewhat hoarse.
Junxi gently patted Xue Waiwai's back. "It's not certain yet, so don't think too much about it."
"Mr. Zhou..." A voice called out from the private room.
Junxi clenched her fists; that voice, sweet like spring, had pushed her sanity to the brink of collapse. But she couldn't lose control; she had to hold herself together.
Zhou Xuanyu remained calmly standing in place. His composure was impressive; most men would have rushed over upon hearing such a coy tone.
After a moment, a staff member from the KTV hurried over.
"Mr. Zhou! We found something!" He seemed eager to present his findings, completely unaware that this name was better left undiscovered. "There's someone named Gao Yuan who booked a small room."
"Which floor?" Xue Waiwai, who had just been crying like a docile kitten, suddenly sprang up as if she had been electrified.
"This guest and his friends left fifteen minutes ago."
"Left? Where did they go?"
"Ma'am, that's not something we can track after guests leave, is it?" The hotel staff chuckled lightly.
Zhou Xuanyu glanced at him, and he quickly stopped laughing.
Xue Waiwai took out her phone and began to call Gao Yuan, but the phone was already turned off.
"This bastard!" Xue Waiwai cursed, then dashed out like an arrow released from a bow. "I have to go find him."
"Where do you think you're going to find him at this hour?" Junxi grabbed her arm. "Come back with me; we can deal with this tomorrow!"
This was the first time Junxi had lost her temper that night. Xue Waiwai was taken aback and fell silent.
Junxi wasn't angry with Xue Waiwai; she was furious with that scumbag Gao Yuan. Additionally, she had strong objections to Zhou Xuanyu being out and about.
She pulled Xue Waiwai a few steps forward, only to turn around and see Zhou Xuanyu still following them.
"What are you doing?"
"Just making sure you get back safely."
"No need for that," Junxi firmly refused.
"Even if it's not for you, I can at least see your friend home," Zhou Xuanyu replied coldly.
Junxi glanced at Xue Waiwai, who had gone from sobbing uncontrollably to quietly sniffling. This subdued sadness was even more concerning.
In her current state, it wasn't appropriate for Xue Waiwai to be hailing cabs on the street.
Junxi no longer refused.
Zhou Xuanyu took the car keys to get the car, while Junxi held onto Xue Waiwai, waiting at the door.
The night was deep, but Zhou Xuanyu's figure seemed to shine. She began to understand why Xue Waiwai could recognize Gao Yuan in a crowd with such certainty.
Because when you love someone, that person shines in your eyes.
Once they got into the car, Xue Waiwai kept crying. Junxi couldn't say much in front of Zhou Xuanyu; she could only gently pat Xue Waiwai's back to comfort her.
After getting in the car, Zhou Xuanyu asked, "Where to?" and then fell silent. He was the type of man who couldn't stand seeing a woman cry, and Wen Junxi rarely troubled him in this regard.
But does not crying mean not caring?
The car stopped downstairs at Junxi's place, and Xue Waiwai got out first. By this time, she had calmed down and was trying to call Gao Yuan.
"Thank you," Junxi paused for a moment before speaking to Zhou Xuanyu.
"Mm."
Zhou Xuanyu responded dismissively. His face was hidden in the darkness, making it hard to see even his outline.
Junxi pushed the door open and stepped out with one foot but paused again. Unable to suppress her curiosity and jealousy any longer, she forced herself to ask, "Are you going back to find those women?"
Zhou Xuanyu glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
"What?" he echoed, unsure if he truly hadn't heard her or if he was deliberately provoking her to repeat herself.
"I asked if you're still planning to go back and find those sweet-voiced ladies!" Junxi raised her voice, clearly annoyed.
At what should have been a tense moment, Zhou Xuanyu unexpectedly smirked.
"Aren't we supposed to be apart for a while? Are you really trying to control me now?"
"I... couldn't care less about you." Junxi stammered, struggling to come up with a reason to stop him from seeking pleasure elsewhere. Finally, she blurted out, "I advise you to exercise some restraint. That place isn't exactly clean; you might catch something!"
"What kind of illness?" Zhou Xuanyu countered, amusement evident in his tone this time.
Junxi's face flushed as she glared at him through the rearview mirror. "You know what kind of illness."
"I don't know."
"Then forget it."
Zhou Xuanyu fell silent for a few seconds, the smile on his face gradually fading.
"Can't you just say that you don't want me to go?" His voice turned cold again.
"Go if you want."
"Wen Junxi, do you really trust me this little?" Zhou Xuanyu sounded defeated.
"Yes, I've always believed in you. My trust in you runs much deeper than your trust in me."
"You..."
"I'm leaving! If you have the ability, then go ahead!"
Junxi jumped out of the car and slammed the door shut.
Zhou Xuanyu sat in the car. Even though he was the one being dismissed, at that moment, he felt quite good.
A call came through on his phone, urging him to hurry back. After a few drinks, those people spoke rather casually, and someone even mentioned that a room had been booked for him...
Zhou Xuanyu pressed the phone to his ear, watching Wen Junxi wrap her arms around Xue Waiwai as they walked into the hallway. This woman, how could she act so manly in front of her girlfriend?
"I'm not going," he said.
Xue Waiwai took a shower and changed into Junxi's clothes. She walked into the room and lay down in the bedroom. She was in a bad mood, so much so that she didn't even notice how lavish Junxi's bed was compared to the rest of the room.
After Junxi finished washing up, he lay down beside her.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked, lying on her side and looking at Xue Waiwai.
"I'm thinking about how to break up when we meet tomorrow."
Junxi sighed, not wanting to offer much advice. When faced with a cheating man, there was nothing worth holding onto. It was best to cut ties quickly before getting in deeper.
"Do you want me to accompany you?" Junxi asked.
"No need," Xue Waiwai shook her head. "Gao Yuan is all show; I can handle him even if it comes to a fight."
Junxi felt a pang in her heart. Even at this point, Xue Waiwai still had the energy to joke around.
"Then get some rest," Junxi said as she leaned in and hugged her.
Xue Waiwai had clearly started to regain her composure, but the warmth of Junxi's embrace made the tears flow again.
"Junxi, you really need to open your eyes when it comes to people. Don't be like me; I was completely blind!"
"Don't say that. The heavens must have something better in store for you."
"I don't believe that. I've always been unlucky. When I met Gao Yuan, I thought, 'Why is the universe suddenly being so nice to me, giving me someone so good-looking?' Now I understand; the heavens were just playing tricks on me."
"Waiwai..."
"You’re different. Mr. Zhou is truly a good man; you mustn't let him go," Xue Waiwai suddenly shifted the topic back to Junxi.
"How do you know he's a good man?"
"Look at a man's eyes. Just by looking into Mr. Zhou's eyes, I can tell. Most of the time, his gaze is directed at you. It's just that you haven't noticed it. When a man silently watches a woman, isn't that love?"
"But he doesn't believe me," Junxi said, still feeling a bit lost and discouraged.
"Trust is mutual. Rumors often have some basis; my suspicion of Gao Yuan comes from the fact that there are indeed reasons to doubt him. Sometimes you should reflect on yourself and see if there's something you haven't done right," Xue Waiwai, who had just suffered emotional pain herself, spoke as if she had become an expert on love.
However, Xue Waiwai made a lot of sense.
Perhaps they should have a calm and serious conversation.
Junxi and Xue Waiwai talked all night. The night felt short, barely enough for them to discuss their experiences in life and love since leaving school. Most of the time, it was Xue Waiwai speaking while Junxi listened. Junxi knew that Xue Waiwai needed an outlet for her emotions, and being that unique outlet for her was a kind of fortune.
The next morning, Xue Waiwai left with a sense of openness. Although Junxi worried about her, she understood that this optimistic facade was likely just a front.
But she also knew that some dilemmas could only be resolved by the individuals involved.
If Xue Waiwai could remain so positive despite facing much harsher challenges, Junxi couldn't help but reflect on herself.
Perhaps she should take more initiative to address the issues standing between her and Zhou Xuanyu.
Before heading out, Junxi dialed Zhou Xuanyu's number...
