Shen Yunchong also spotted Zhou Xuanyu and, originally planning to get back into his car, paused instead.
"Mr. Zhou," he greeted warmly, with a hint of intentionality.
Zhou Xuanyu shifted his gaze from Junxi and nodded at Shen Yunchong.
He had already heard from Galen about Junxi's move from Hengfu Group to Zhongyuan Group. Zhou Xuanyu had also noticed Shen Yunchong's fondness for Junxi long ago.
However, he did not expect these two to become involved so quickly. A sense of displeasure welled up within him.
After exchanging pleasantries, Shen Yunchong did not linger.
"You two take your time; I’ll be on my way," he said, bidding farewell to Junxi once more.
"Alright. Be safe on the road," Junxi reminded him deliberately.
Zhou Xuanyu watched the seemingly reluctant parting between the two, his patience wearing thin. Fortunately, Shen Yunchong got into his car and drove off immediately.
"What are you doing here?" Junxi asked, looking up at Zhou Xuanyu.
His expression was somewhat intimidating in the darkness, but she maintained her composure.
"I told you to stay away from Shen Yunchong," Zhou Xuanyu said through clenched teeth as he stepped forward and grasped Junxi's shoulders tightly.
Her indifferent expression sent a chill down his spine.
"Why should I listen to you?" Junxi pushed Zhou Xuanyu's hand away. "If you came just to say these things to me, then you might as well leave."
After saying that, Junxi turned to walk down the hallway.
Zhou Xuanyu blocked her path.
"What should I say for you to quietly listen to me until I'm done?"
"I just need you to be honest about the evidence you've gathered."
Zhou Xuanyu let go of her.
He knew that continuing the conversation would only lead to a deadlock. She had her stubbornness, and he had his concerns; they were indeed not suited to meet at this moment.
Junxi watched Zhou Xuanyu fall silent, feeling a coldness in her heart. What shocked her even more was that after she finished speaking, Zhou Xuanyu turned and walked away.
She was stunned.
Zhou Xuanyu's steps were disordered, tinged with impatience as he quickly made his way to his car.
"Zhou Xuanyu!" Junxi shouted.
Zhou Xuanyu stopped but did not turn back.
"Is this your sincerity?"
Was he really here just to walk away after waiting for her?
Zhou Xuanyu stood still, contemplating for a few seconds, which felt like an entire day to Junxi. Suddenly, he turned around and strode toward her.
Junxi was taken aback, watching his slightly haggard yet handsome face magnify before her eyes.
She guessed his intentions and struggled wildly against his grip. Even so, Zhou Xuanyu easily captured her lips with his.
The kiss was heart-stopping and intense.
They were not kissing in the traditional sense; it was more like a battle, one attacking while the other defended, advancing and retreating.
In the end, Zhou Xuanyu finally managed to kiss her.
Yet at the moment their lips touched, tears welled up in Junxi's eyes.
"My sincerity is you. What about you?" Zhou Xuanyu said, gently tracing her tear-streaked face with his fingertip, coldly adding, "What about you?"
Junxi pressed her hands against Zhou Xuanyu's chest to keep him from coming closer.
Hearing his words, she scoffed.
"Your sincerity is me? Just me?"
Zhou Xuanyu glared at her, unwilling to respond to the mockery written all over her face.
"In my opinion, what you truly care about is how to protect your brother, Zhou Xuan Yong."
It ultimately ended on a sour note.
After leaving Junxi, Zhou Xuanyu headed straight to Wang Tianhai's studio.
Wang Tianhai had called earlier, saying that the investigation had yielded results and requested Zhou to come in person. He didn’t ask what the results were; he just wanted to see Junxi one last time before learning the truth.
To his surprise, he found her with Shen Yunchong…
This was Zhou Xuanyu's first visit to Wang Tianhai's studio. The location was secluded, lending it an air of mystery.
"Mr. Zhou," Wang Tianhai greeted him as he waited in his office.
Zhou Xuanyu was not in the mood for small talk. He sat down directly in the chair opposite Wang Tianhai's desk, slamming his hand down on the table. "Get to the point."
Wang Tianhai was straightforward as well. He pulled out several documents from a file and placed the one showing the final results in front of Zhou Xuanyu.
"The Corruption Case from back then was indeed a setup against Wen Wei and Yang Tingfang," he stated, observing Zhou Xuanyu's expression before pointing at the name on the paper.
Zhou Xuanyu stared at the name, suddenly standing up and crumpling the paper into a ball, clenching it tightly in his fist.
"I’m taking this with me. Don’t do anything yet."
Wang Tianhai nodded, patting his chest. "Don't worry, Mr. Zhou. I have a strong sense of professional ethics."
Zhou Xuanyu gathered the remaining files on the desk and turned to leave.
His car was parked right at the entrance. He tossed the documents into the vehicle and pulled out his phone to dial a number.
On the other end, someone quickly responded. As he started the engine, he asked, "Is the master asleep?"
The person on the line confirmed.
"Go wake him up and tell him I'm on my way," he instructed.
Zhou Xuanyu tossed his phone onto the passenger seat, not bothering to listen to the response from the other side.
Half an hour later, Zhou Xuanyu's car had arrived at the entrance of Zhou Family Courtyard. Perhaps hearing his arrival, lights flickered on in the second floor and spread down to the first.
Before long, the main door swung open, and the butler rushed out.
"Second Master, what brings you here in such a hurry?"
Zhou Xuanyu did not answer but simply asked, "Is he up?"
"He is up, but he's quite angry..." the butler replied softly.
Angry?
Perfect. He was feeling quite irritable himself.
Zhou Xuanyu hurried up the stairs.
Zhou Xuan Yong was already dressed and waiting for him in the study. Just as the butler had said, he looked displeased due to being abruptly awakened.
"What’s the rush? Tomorrow will be too late to talk about it," Zhou Xuan Yong couldn't help but complain as soon as he saw his brother.
"Yes," Zhou Xuanyu replied.
If this matter didn’t get resolved, he didn’t know how he would spend the night. Since he was destined for a sleepless night, he might as well get everything out in the open.
"What is it?" Seeing his brother so determined, Zhou Xuan Yong decided not to delve into the fact that he had been woken up.
He knew that if there wasn’t something important, Zhou Xuanyu wouldn’t have rushed over like this.
Zhou Xuanyu didn’t speak but instead threw a few file folders onto Zhou Xuan Yong’s desk.
"What’s this?" Zhou Xuan Yong didn’t immediately look through them; he just stared at his brother.
"Aren't you going to take a look first?"
"Just tell me. It’s late, and my old eyes aren’t up for anything too complicated," Zhou Xuan Yong said.
"Alright." Zhou Xuanyu took out a crumpled piece of paper from his pocket and smoothed it out on the table. "Big Brother, I want to know the truth about Director Wen Weiwen and the Corruption Case from back then."
"What?" Zhou Xuan Yong squinted, glaring at Zhou Xuanyu. "What are you talking about?"
"I’m asking what the truth is regarding Junxi's father and Director Wen Weiwen’s corruption!" Zhou Xuanyu repeated slowly and clearly.
"You brat!" Zhou Xuan Yong slammed his palm on the desk. "You come here in the middle of the night just to ask me about something so pointless? If that’s the case, get out!"
"Yes. But I won't go out, so please answer me!" Zhou Xuanyu's gaze was resolute.
Zhou Xuan Yong looked at his brother, who was so aggressive, and his anger flared even more.
"On what grounds do you question me now? I see that woman has truly bewitched you!"
Zhou Xuanyu remained silent, merely glaring at Zhou Xuan Yong, as if he wouldn't relent until he got a response.
The atmosphere in the study was tense, with the two of them locked in a standoff, neither willing to compromise first.
After a long while, Zhou Xuan Yong finally deflated.
"I don't know about this matter; you've asked the wrong person."
Zhou Xuanyu sneered.
"Eldest Brother, you say you don't know? Shouldn't you be the one who knows best?"
"Zhou Xuanyu! What exactly do you want to say?" Zhou Xuan Yong had completely lost his patience, pressing his hand against his chest, clearly agitated.
"I just want you to tell me in your own words whether or not you are involved in that case from back then."
"No."
Zhou Xuan Yong denied it without a second thought.
"Really not?"
Compared to the moment he learned the truth about that case, the lack of remorse in his brother's concealment left Zhou Xuanyu feeling even more desperate.
"No!" Zhou Xuan Yong shouted, his voice filled with a sense of desperation.
Zhou Xuanyu sighed and pushed the piece of paper in front of his brother. "Then tell me, what is this?"
Just moments ago, Zhou Xuan Yong had been dismissing him, claiming his eyesight was failing. Now he grabbed the paper from the table and glanced at it quickly.
"Zhou Xuanyu, have you lost your mind? How dare you send someone to investigate me?" Zhou Xuan Yong crumpled the paper into a ball and hurled it at Zhou Xuanyu.
Zhou Xuanyu did not dodge; the weight of it barely registered on him. What truly pained him was his brother's furious reaction.
If he weren't guilty of something, why would he be so agitated?
"I didn't send anyone to investigate you. I only had someone look into Director Wen's Corruption Case from back then. But I never expected it would be related to you."
Zhou Xuanyu felt a twinge of regret for getting involved in this matter. If he had remained ignorant of the truth, he could have lived happily with Junxi without a care.
But now, this truth had destroyed everything for him.
"Big Brother, tell me, did you do it?"
