When Samir lightly pressed the remote control, the large screen TV in the VIP room lit up, and the news report once again focused on the "Black Wall." A male anchor was reporting solemnly, with a large Black Wall image in the background and a prominent slogan above it reading "Black Wall Security Enhancement Plan."
"Recently, due to continuous attempts by external hackers to dig into and breach the network defenses of Night City, especially targeting this layer that we rely on to protect our Black Wall, Regulatory oversight has issued a warning again, announcing that they will strengthen monitoring of all network activities." The anchor's tone was so serious, making the atmosphere of the report also seem heavy.
Ren furrowed his brow and glanced at Samir. He had lost count of how many times he had heard the contents of this news, it seemed to be repeating in every corner, every place.
"Do you know, Samir?" Ren's mouth twisted into a wry smile, "This is the third time I've seen this news today. Every time it's the same content, the same warning. It's really boring."
Samir did not respond immediately, his gaze still fixed on the TV screen, as if waiting for a specific image or information. But when he turned around, his eyes were filled with a deep seriousness.
"I didn't call you here just to watch these," Samir said, his voice low and somewhat hoarse.
Ren widened his eyes and half-jokingly said, "So you want me to dig through that Black Wall? Bring back all those rebellious AIs and plunge the entire Night City into chaos?"
After hearing this, Samir revealed a hint of playful smile at the corner of his mouth. He took a deep breath and said, " Ren, I have always believed in your abilities and know your loyalty to this city. But some things are not as simple as they appear on the surface. Sometimes, we have to make some choices that are not by choice."
Ren blinked, as if recalling some dealings with the Voodoo boys. "The Voodoo boys?" he said, with a hint of disdain in his tone, "Of course, I know them. In the underground network world of Night City, who doesn't know them? They always consider themselves some kind of elite hacker group, with mysterious hacking rituals and advanced skills, but in my opinion, they're just a bunch of guys who love to play mysterious games."
He paused for a moment, adjusted his tone, and continued, "However, I have to admit that they do have outstanding abilities in certain aspects. Their skills and knowledge are top-notch in Night City, but because of this, sometimes they can be too arrogant, thinking they can do whatever they want in the cyber world, without any restraints."
Ren sneered, "Every time I face them, I can feel their self-righteous attitude. They always seem to think that as long as they have advanced enough hacking techniques, they can dominate the cyber world of Night City. But from my perspective, no matter how high your skills are, without principles and values, you're just an empty shell."
Samir looked at Ren with a hint of playful smile and said, "You seem to have some bias against Voodoo boys, Ren."
Ren stared at his glass, lost in thought, and didn't respond immediately. After a few seconds, he looked up and earnestly said to Samir, "It's not that I don't like them, I just can't quite accept their way of doing things. It's too cryptic, too mysterious. You know me, I prefer a more direct and clear approach."
Samir nodded with a smile, "Everyone has their principles and style, and that's also why Night City is so diverse. What do you think, Ren?"
Samir intentionally elongated his tone and a hint of cunning flashed in his eyes: "But, when it comes to the Voodoo boys, there's something you need to know."
Ren raised an eyebrow, feeling a bit uneasy, and looked at Samir with confusion.
Samir said leisurely, "Your next mission partner is from the Voodoo boys. I've already promised them."
Ren looked slightly surprised and asked hesitantly, "Are you serious? Why suddenly collaborate with them?"
Samir smiled slightly and turned his gaze to the night view outside the window: "You know about Night City, sometimes, certain things require certain special means. And Voodoo boys, they have the means we need."
Samir leaned back on the sofa, crossing his hands on his knees, and said leisurely: "You know, there are many organizations in Night City, but Voodoo boys is unique. They stand out."
Ren frowned and waited for Samir to continue.
Samir sighed and said, "Their technology, their secrets, and their beliefs have all secured their position in the online world. I know you have reservations about them, even some prejudices. But this time, I need you to set aside those prejudices."
Ren touched his chin thoughtfully and said, "Samir, I have no doubt about their skills. It's just their mysterious way of doing things that makes me uneasy. Especially when I heard they can control netrunning at will."
Samir gave a knowing smile, "Haha, that's just the rumors and legends of Night City. But it's undeniable that they do have some amazing abilities."
Ren fell silent for a moment, then nodded to indicate his understanding. Samir patted Ren's shoulder with satisfaction and said, "I know you are the most professional Mercenary, which is why I have always trusted you. I just hope that this time, you can cooperate well with Voodoo boys, after all, this mission is very important to both of us."
Ren took a deep breath, his eyes showing a hint of contemplation. He stared at the whiskey glass on the table, reflecting the amber liquid that shimmered enticingly in the light. Suddenly, he felt that the glass was like his current situation - alluring on the surface, but filled with danger inside.
Samir seemed to sense Ren's inner struggle. He flashed a sly smile and gently poured whiskey into the glass in front of Ren, allowing the liquid to rise slowly. He said, "In Night City, everyone has their own secrets, their own purposes. Everyone is dancing on their own stage. You see, Ren, Night City is like a big web, trapping everyone, making it impossible to escape."
Ren furrowed his brow, feeling as though he was caught in some kind of scheme. He sighed and said, " Samir, I know you're not just an ordinary fixer. I've seen your ambitions and plans, but I hope you understand that I am a Mercenary. I simply fulfill my missions according to contracts."
Samir laughed heartily after listening, reached out and gently patted Ren's shoulder, saying, "I know, Ren, that's also why I admire you. I just hope you know that sometimes, we can't choose the situations we face, we can only choose how to face them."
