Duan Wei was on a business trip.
I was home alone, feeling extremely bored. I invited my best friend out for tea and to ask her some questions about preparing for pregnancy. She was very enthusiastic, sharing many tips with me, and teasingly said, "Bingxin, you really are lucky to have married such a wonderful husband."
I smiled but didn’t respond.
"By the way," my friend suddenly asked, "when do you plan to have kids?"
"I haven't decided yet," I replied. "I want to get my body in shape first."
"That makes sense," she nodded. "You need to take care of your health; otherwise, pregnancy can be quite tough."
We chatted and enjoyed our tea, the atmosphere very pleasant.
As we talked, something suddenly came to my mind.
"By the way, do you know about Pregnancy Pillows?"
"Of course," my friend said. "My cousin used one when she was pregnant; it’s said to relieve back pain."
I frowned. "So, does a normal person need to use a Pregnancy Pillow?"
She shook her head. "Generally speaking, no."
My heart sank.
"Why do you suddenly ask that?" my friend inquired curiously.
"Oh, it's nothing," I smiled lightly. "Just a random question."
I took a sip of tea, and a scene from six months ago flashed in my mind.
That day, I had passed by Duan Wei's office and decided to drop in for a bit. On the sofa, I noticed a pillow.
I was puzzled; Duan Wei never used pillows—why would there be one in his office?
I took out my phone, snapped a photo, and sent it to Duan Wei.
"What is this?"
Duan Wei quickly replied, "It's a Pregnancy Pillow."
"Why do you have a Pregnancy Pillow in your office?"
"Oh, I was really busy with work recently and my back was always sore, so I bought this."
"I see."
At that moment, I didn't think much of it.
But now...
"Bingxin? Bingxin?" My friend's voice pulled me back to reality.
"What's wrong?" She looked at me with concern, "You look so pale."
"It's nothing." I shook my head, "I might just be too tired lately."
After chatting with my friend for a while longer, we both went home.
That night, I took a shower and sat on my bed reading.
Suddenly, my phone on the nightstand vibrated.
I picked it up and answered the call, "Hello?"
"Miss Xu," a deep male voice came through the receiver, "the person you asked me to monitor has made a move."
I instantly became alert, "What kind of move?"
"He made a phone call," the other party said, "I eavesdropped."
"What did he say?" I quickly asked.
"I'll send it to your email; you'll know once you listen."
"Okay," I replied, "I'll check my email right now. Thank you."
"You're welcome; it's my duty."
After hanging up the phone, I quickly opened my laptop to check for new emails.
There was an audio file in the email.
I put on my headphones and clicked on the audio.
"There's really no way for me to get close to Yan Bingxin," Lin Yifeng's voice came through. "She hates me and avoids me at all costs!"
"Please, think of a way for me. I really can't take it anymore..."
Another voice chimed in. It was Duan Wei. His tone was calm and decisive. "You have half a month left. If you can't complete the task by then, I'll have someone else take over."
I stared wide-eyed at the computer screen in disbelief. That voice... it truly belonged to Duan Wei. But why was he doing this? What kind of deal had he made with Lin Yifeng?
I couldn't sleep all night.
The next morning, I went to school with dark circles under my eyes. I didn't go inside but lingered at the school gate. Sure enough, I saw Lin Yifeng again. He seemed surprised to see me and paused for a moment before walking over.
"Bingxin..." he said.
I looked up at him. "I want to talk to you."
A glimmer of hope flashed in Lin Yifeng's eyes. Perhaps, to him, I was his last lifeline.
