"I'm sorry." His smile was bitter. On his youthful face, there was a coldness and silence I was unfamiliar with, along with a hint of helplessness and self-mockery.
"Why?" I asked, puzzled.
He said softly, "You promised to treat me well for a lifetime."
I lowered my eyelids and smiled lightly. "Suda is my sister. If you treat her well for a lifetime, that is enough for my own lifetime."
He forced a bitter smile. "Firefly, Xie Weiying, did you ever love me? Even for a moment, even for an instant?"
I fell into a long silence.
Taking a deep breath, I looked at him seriously and finally smiled faintly, saying calmly, "Huan Wen, I don't want to deceive you. I'm sorry. I like you, truly like you. But that is the affection between friends, between siblings. I will always be grateful for your care and companionship; I will keep it in my heart. Huan Wen, the beautiful moments we shared growing up together are enough for us to remember. Those things are unrelated to others; we only need to remember them ourselves. From today onward, our future does not need to be remembered. I won't remember you, and you don't need to remember me. Let's forget its existence in our hearts."
He let out a light laugh, so desolate and helpless. Yet there was also a hint of relief, a glimmer of solace.
"That's fine," he sighed softly. "Firefly, from now on, just remember the beautiful Huan Wen of the past. No matter how strange or different the future Huan Wen becomes, you no longer need to remember him. I'm afraid that such a Huan Wen will become so unfamiliar that you won't recognize him anymore."
At that moment, I didn't understand the meaning behind his words. But later on, I came to realize it. After losing his father, Huan Wen had to shoulder the responsibilities of the entire family. The once indifferent and carefree Huan Wen began to formally enter the struggles of officialdom. He started his ascent in the political arena. He was right; that greedy, calculating, selfish, cruel, mercenary Huan Wen, who fought for power and engaged in deceitful schemes—this was someone I truly did not recognize.
That beautiful youthful love quietly faded away without a sound.
A few days later, the emperor arranged a marriage. Huan Wen was appointed as a Grand General and married the emperor's sister, Nankang Princess.
The silent family dinner was something I wasn't quite used to.
"Everyone, dig in! This is a meal I personally cooked as a wedding gift for both of you. Give it a try, is it good?" I said with a smile.
Huan Wen sat there silently, not saying a word. Suda lowered his head shyly, his face slightly flushed, unable to look at him.
I laughed, "What's wrong? Do you think my cooking is bad? I remember that Cloud Shadow Little Quanzi and the others always loved what I made. Huan Wen, didn't you used to enjoy it too?"
Suda shook his head and chuckled lightly, "How could that be? Your dishes have always been delicious. It's just—" He hesitated, glancing at the cold-faced Huan Wen.
After a long pause and several deep breaths, Huan Wen finally spoke softly, "How could that be? Your Highness's culinary skills have always been appreciated by me."
I smiled awkwardly; this Huan Wen was being rather difficult.
I decided to ignore him and continued eating. It was delicious. My happy demeanor made Suda chuckle softly, "Is it really that good?"
With my mouth full, I nodded and mumbled, "Yes, really. If you don't believe me, you should try it."
The two of them fell silent as they began to eat.
I sighed lightly, looking at my chopsticks, and suddenly said, "You know, love is like these chopsticks. A love like chopsticks is neither too tight nor too loose—just right. Each stick appears independent from the other; they don’t need to cling to each other or harbor grudges. They stand side by side in equal height and posture. But when two chopsticks come together to pick up food—like this," I demonstrated by picking up a piece of food with my chopsticks and taking a bite, then continued, "the two sticks become intimately connected, working together to accomplish something. No matter how difficult it may be, they won’t give up on each other. Love between two people is like this: simple and unadorned, yet it is the most genuine existence of mutual reliance."
As I spoke while eating, I kept my head down and didn’t see their expressions or reactions.
Suda suddenly smiled and said, "Firefly, thank you. Thank you for everything you've done for us."
I gently curled the corners of my mouth, "Let's eat. Today, we bid farewell. We will step out of each other's paths. Goodbye." My smile gradually blossomed, swaying like a flower.
Feelings and memories cannot withstand the passage of time.
We must cherish them.
