A handsome young man cautiously approached the cute girl playing by the lake.
Although the little girl was engrossed in her play, she had already sensed someone approaching. Years of training were not for show; her close bodyguards and masters had imparted all their knowledge to her. Moreover, she had never relaxed even a little in her quest to become stronger.
Before the young man could get closer, he heard the girl suddenly say lightly, "Brother, is that you?" After saying this, she let out a soft laugh.
The young man stood there, facing the wind, his gray robe billowing around him. He smiled at the girl, feeling a mix of excitement and a desire to remain calm. "Yes," he replied.
The little girl suddenly pouted playfully and whispered, "But Mom never mentioned you."
The young man's expression turned slightly astonished before he smiled in understanding. His unexpected visit today must have seemed abrupt to her. He couldn't help but secretly follow his father, who often disguised himself when leaving the palace. To his surprise, he discovered a new world here—one that was entirely different from what he had known for years. The warmth of this world made him feel a sense of longing.
This was seemingly contrary to everything he had been doing for the past few years. Suddenly, he began to understand that perhaps his father had always known about his actions but chose not to stop him—or maybe he simply didn’t want to. It seemed his father was eager for someone else to take charge of the kingdom so that he could escape and live the life he desired. The thought made him feel a surge of resentment.
Unbeknownst to him, he was becoming his father's substitute. The realization furrowed Sima Shao's brow.
However, in the next moment, he found himself smiling again. If his father could take such steps, then why couldn’t he?
With that thought, a serene smile blossomed on his lips, reminiscent of autumn lotus flowers—somewhat eerie yet beautiful.
Sima Shao walked over and gently said, "It's okay; when she returns, she'll tell you."
"Then..." The little girl, who had been facing away from him, furrowed her brow in thought before suddenly turning around and looking up at the handsome young man with a radiant smile. Sweetly and obediently, she called out, "Brother."
The young man was instantly captivated by her bright smile; it was like a rainbow appearing suddenly in the sky—a delightful surprise, like a beautiful dream. He found himself lost in it, standing there dazed as if his soul had left his body.
At that moment, the little girl pouted playfully and said, "Brother, look! My little ball fell into the water. Can you help me find it?" She gazed at him with her clean and innocent eyes sparkling like water.
The brief hesitation in his heart vanished as he replied earnestly, "Where is it?" He moved closer to the water's edge to look around with a serious expression.
If the young boy had seen the glint of cunning and shrewdness in the little girl's eyes, he might have thought twice. However, he seemed oblivious to her clear, water-like gaze and her beautiful, charming face that had him entranced.
Suddenly, the boy behind him smiled strangely, a grin that was entirely different from her usual innocence. In an instant, she kicked him sharply on his most vulnerable calf. The boy stumbled in pain, losing his balance and falling into the lake under the bright, joyful smile of the girl.
The girl stood happily on the shore, watching the floundering figure in the water who couldn't swim. She shook her head with a sigh, seemingly resigned to the fact that such a foolish person was beyond help. Bored, she began to play with her fingers.
At that moment, a figure appeared at the stone gate leading this way. Upon seeing the familiar silhouette, the girl joyfully ran over and leaped into his broad, warm embrace, rubbing her head against him and letting out a comfortable sigh. Her voice was sweet and satisfied as she said, "Uncle Daddy, you’re here! Where’s Mom?"
Sima Rui looked at the lovely little girl with rosy cheeks and affectionately rubbed his nose against her cheek. With a slightly hoarse voice, he replied, "Yes. She's inside."
The girl rolled her eyes impatiently at this. She knew it would be like this; every time her mom went traveling with this inexplicable Uncle Daddy, the first thing they did upon returning was sleep like there was no tomorrow. Nothing could stop them from collapsing into bed for two whole days and nights. Only after devouring everything on the dining table like a hungry wolf would things return to normal. Everyone in this household, from her down to an ordinary cleaning girl, knew about their master’s habits.
Sima Rui watched this beautiful little girl, feeling moved by each of her small actions and smiles. He remembered waking up in this villa for the first time and seeing her curious big eyes gazing at him as she asked innocently, "Didn’t many doctors say you wouldn’t survive? Why are you still alive?"
Looking at this girl filled with curiosity yet unceremoniously questioning why he was still alive, he felt she looked somewhat familiar.
When she noticed he wasn’t speaking, she boldly reached out to touch his handsome face without hesitation—sharp features exuding an innate nobility. She pouted disdainfully and complained, "Although you look pretty good, you're still a mute and always make my mom sad. I really don’t like you." Seeing her pink cherry lips curl up slightly as she spoke made Sima Rui unable to suppress a chuckle.
"Mom?" Sima Rui's ears perked up at this familiar term; it sounded like something he had heard before. After thinking for a moment, he recalled that in the palace, the prince seemed to always call that person 'Mom'... Why would she call her 'Mom' too? Sima Rui felt a bit surprised.
For some reason, even though he had never met this inexplicably appearing little girl before, it felt as if they had known each other for a long time. Suddenly, Sima Rui pulled her into an embrace and gazed seriously into her sparkling eyes as she struggled to rise up from his hold. He said in a deep voice, "Perhaps one day you will really like me very much."
"Is that so?" Looking into his amusingly serious eyes made the little girl burst into laughter suddenly; her smile was radiant and dazzling like a brilliant star appearing in the sky. It left Sima Rui momentarily stunned because that smile resembled someone else's—someone from long ago during their brotherhood ceremony—a boy whose clear and beautiful smile was equally unforgettable.
While he was lost in thought, the little girl suddenly lowered her head mischievously and planted a kiss on his thin yet sensual lips.
Sima Rui stared in shock at this bold girl while she looked back at him with satisfaction before turning away to make a funny face. As Mom had said, using such Western customs here would surely startle people! With a few playful giggles, the mischievous and adorable An Yijun skipped away.
Sima Rui was left in shock, his fingers brushing against his lips, yet a sweet smile lingered on his face.
He never expected that upon waking from a nightmare, he would find himself face to face with a Fairy.
Recalling the firm voice that had threatened him in his hazy state before he lost consciousness—someone who had made it clear he could not die—he paused for a moment. He attempted to rise, only to realize he was completely immobilized.
Even now, he felt a lingering fear from that time when he had awakened, terrified that the person would vanish. The dread had nearly overwhelmed him, but the Fairy's smile eased the gloom that filled his heart.
It was only later that he learned the dreadful truth: that woman had kept from him the fact that they already had a daughter—his child, Sima Rui's child. When he discovered this, the joy he felt surpassed even that of ascending to the throne. This was his child, the offspring of him and Little Jin. The realization drove him nearly mad; he could hardly believe it was real.
Thinking of this, Sima Rui couldn't help but nuzzle closer to Xiao Yi Jun in his arms. An Yijun unabashedly took advantage of the moment, playfully teasing him.
Just then, he heard a strange sound—a faint cry for help. Glancing at An Yijun's face, which still bore an almost wicked expression, an uneasy feeling washed over him. He wondered who had become her latest victim. He remembered how well they had gotten along since he had said those words to her, but fearing it might frighten her, they had never revealed to An Yijun that he was her biological father. He found their current relationship quite satisfactory; moreover, soon he would be able to...
As thoughts of his son potentially becoming the next sacrifice crossed his mind, Sima Rui felt a twinge of reluctance. Yet seeing An Yijun's innocent and sweet smile, along with the warmth radiating from her, made him feel there was nothing in this life he could abandon.
He now possessed something far more important, didn't he?
This was his home.
An Yijun hugged his head and leaned close to his ear, whispering, "Just now, a fool claiming to be my brother came in, so... heh heh." She chuckled mischievously. "I just let him cool off for a bit as a greeting gift."
"Brother..." Sima Rui paused for a moment before realizing what she meant. He took her hand and walked toward the lake, where Sima Shao was struggling helplessly in the water. Suddenly unable to contain himself, he burst into laughter.
Sima Shao glared resentfully at the two onshore who were doing nothing to help him. Water splashed into his mouth as he fought against the waves, desperately praying not to sink.
Sima Rui looked at him with glee and no sympathy whatsoever as he turned away with An Yijun in his arms. He remembered how badly An Yijun had once tormented him; anyone seeking her approval had to endure such trials. Sima Rui sighed inwardly; they were completely at the mercy of this mother-daughter duo.
Still, he calculated that when they encountered someone else, he'd notify a servant to rescue Sima Shao from the water... If this child were lost, how could he implement his plans for leaving the palace? He thought about it and smiled wickedly again.
As they walked, casually enjoying the candy he had brought back, An Yijun nonchalantly asked, "Junjun, do you want to go to the palace with Uncle Daddy?" The name made him sweat for quite a while...
An Yijun showed no particular reaction or curiosity, only asking lightly, "The palace? Is it fun there?" In her heart, she merely scoffed: that place was nothing but a source of pain and sorrow for her mother, leaving behind countless scars. Asking her to go there was simply a huge joke.
Sima Rui nodded obliviously, "It's fun."
"Is it more fun than Anfu?" Her voice remained innocently pure.
"Of course," Sima Rui promised. "If Junjun likes it, we can even make you a princess." Their conversation was bizarre and nonsensical.
"Princess?" An Yijun paused slightly, murmuring, "I wonder how different it is from the princesses in the fairy tales my mom told me?" Then she couldn't help but chuckle. How could it be possible? Her mom had said those were just simple and beautiful fairy tales.
"What's wrong?" Noticing her momentary distraction, Sima Rui asked.
An Yijun snapped back to reality and immediately raised a purely innocent smile. "A princess? I don’t want to go. Mom said that princesses are the most cowardly people in the world, just staying in their castles waiting for a prince to rescue them. I don’t want to be a coward."
Sima Rui's face instantly darkened. His facial muscles twitched slightly; what kind of theory was this...
