Xin'er didn't know where she was going. At that moment, her heart was in turmoil, and all she wanted was to find a deserted place to hide away.
However, the streets were crowded with people. It felt as if everyone's gaze was fixed on her, making her feel utterly exposed.
The strange looks from those around her and the chaotic noise made Xin'er feel like she was about to lose her mind.
So, she kept running and running.
She didn't know where she was headed; she just wanted to get far away from these people.
Time passed, and she had no idea how long she had been running or where she found herself now. The cacophony around her gradually faded into the background, and Xin'er felt exhausted.
Yet, her legs seemed to have a mind of their own, continuing to propel her forward.
In her chaotic state of mind, she blindly ran ahead without noticing that a shimmering lake lay directly in front of her.
By the time Xin'er realized this, it was too late.
Her feet lost control, and she hurtled toward the lake.
As she stared at the glistening water, Xin'er's heart leaped into her throat.
The worst part was that she couldn't swim!
So, as she was about to plunge into the lake, Xin'er could only stare in shock, her eyes wide open in disbelief.
She thought for sure that this time she would fall into the water.
With no knowledge of swimming, she would surely drown.
But just at that critical moment, Xin'er felt herself lift off the ground.
She spun in mid-air before landing safely on solid ground.
"Uh..."
Everything happened too quickly and suddenly. For a moment, Xin'er was left in a daze, and it took her a while to regain her senses.
When she finally realized what was happening, she found herself tightly embraced by a man. Xin'er felt her mind go blank with shock.
Her first instinct was to push the man away forcefully and step back.
However, just as she pushed him away, he immediately wrapped his arms around her waist, refusing to let her go.
Seeing this, Xin'er couldn't help but gasp in surprise. Without thinking, she raised her small hand and slapped the man hard across the face.
The crisp sound of the slap echoed, accompanied by Xin'er's furious accusations.
"You scoundrel!" Xin'er exclaimed angrily.
Her gaze was fixed firmly on the man before her.
The man, having received the slap, turned his cold face slightly askew. A clear five-finger mark quickly appeared on his tanned skin, revealing just how much force Xin'er had put into that slap.
However, after being struck, the man merely paused for a moment before slowly turning his face back to her, quietly watching Xin'er.
He said nothing, simply pursed his red lips and continued to gaze at her in silence.
Seeing this, Xin'er furrowed her dark eyebrows in confusion.
At that moment, she felt an odd sense of familiarity with the man, as if she had seen him somewhere before.
At this moment, Xin'er finally took the time to examine the man before her.
He was clad in tight-fitting black clothing, his black hair cascading like a waterfall, held back by a black headband that accentuated his chiseled features as if sculpted by a master craftsman.
His facial features were strikingly deep-set, with sword-like brows arching sharply, deep black eyes that seemed to hold a mysterious depth, a high nose bridge, and thin lips pressed together lightly.
It had to be said that this man was exceptionally cold and captivating.
However, there was something very strange about him.
Even after she had slapped him hard just moments ago, his expression remained unfazed, his eyes calm as still water, as if that slap had not been directed at him at all.
Moreover, his hands were still firmly wrapped around her slim waist. No matter how much she struggled or twisted her body, he held on tightly.
His grip was so strong and powerful, like a pair of iron pincers, binding her in place!
Thinking of this, Xin'er furrowed her brow and glared at the man with intense anger. Her red lips parted as she spoke.
"Let go of me!"
Xin'er exclaimed angrily.
After all, she had never encountered a man like him before.
Though he gave off an icy demeanor, resembling a block of ice, he could act so shamelessly.
It was broad daylight; how dare he be so bold!
The thought only fueled her anger further.
And she had expected that even after saying this, the rogue would not let go.
Unexpectedly, this time, she guessed wrong.
As her words fell, the hands that had tightly gripped her waist suddenly loosened.
Feeling this change, Xin'er sighed in relief and quickly stepped back.
However, at that moment, Xin'er felt her foot slip off the edge, and she lost control, falling straight backward.
The sensation of falling made her heart leap to her throat, and it was only then that she remembered the bottomless lake behind her!
But thinking about it now was useless.
Xin'er felt herself tipping backward, completely unable to control her fall.
She thought for sure that this time she would definitely plunge into the lake.
To her surprise, once again, her slender waist was caught by someone.
However, it was different from before.
The man in front of her gently held her waist with one hand but did not pull her back to shore entirely.
He left her suspended in mid-air; if he withdrew his hand, she would surely fall into the lake.
Seeing this, Xin'er felt a mix of confusion and anxiety.
After all, behind her was that unfathomable lake, and she couldn’t swim.
Whether she would fall depended entirely on whether this man would let go.
Xin'er thought about this as her wide-eyed, panicked expression slowly turned to the man who was expressionless yet effortlessly holding her waist with one hand.
The man was quietly watching her, his deep black eyes resembling a thousand-year-old lake, unfathomably deep, making it impossible to discern his thoughts.
As Xin'er gazed at him, unsure of his intentions, he finally spoke, his red lips parting.
"Don't you think you should apologize for what just happened?"
"Uh..."
Xin'er was taken aback by his words.
However, she quickly realized what he was referring to.
Earlier, in her haste, she hadn't noticed that she was about to fall into the lake. It was this man who had saved her at the critical moment.
Yet, she had mistaken him for a rogue, not only scolding him harshly but also slapping him across the face!
Her gaze fell on the man's cheek.
Though his expression remained impassive, making it hard to tell whether he was in pain or not, the cheek she had slapped was now red and swollen, looking quite alarming.
Seeing this, Xin'er couldn't help but gasp in surprise.
She hadn't expected her strength to be so great that it could leave a mark on someone’s face.
And this man had only acted to save her...
A wave of regret and guilt surged within Xin'er as she thought about it.
Her delicate little face reflected her remorse.
She looked at the man with a deep sense of apology in her eyes.
As soon as her small mouth opened, she spoke.
"Sir, I truly apologize for what happened earlier. I was in such a bad mood that I mistook you for a rogue. I'm really sorry, truly sorry."
Realizing it was her mistake, Xin'er didn't hesitate to offer her apology.
Upon hearing Xin'er's words and seeing her little face filled with regret and guilt, the man's deep black eyes flickered slightly.
At that moment, it was noon.
The sun shone brightly in the sky, with not a cloud in sight.
The enchanting sunlight poured down onto the earth, illuminating the lake behind them as if it were covered with a layer of shimmering gold, dazzling and beautiful!
However, at this moment, in his eyes, all the beautiful scenery in the world paled in comparison to the woman before him.
Her black hair flowed like a waterfall, cascading down her back.
With the gentle breeze blowing softly, it swayed lightly behind her, accentuating her little face—delicate and fair, with brows like ink, a charming nose, and lips like petals.
What captivated him most were those clear deep black eyes!
Her eyelashes curled and fanned out like two black fans, so beautiful that one couldn't help but want to reach out and touch them.
In those deep black eyes seemed to gather all the brilliance of the world.
Even the golden shimmering surface of the lake behind her appeared to dim in comparison, losing its luster.
Such a woman was so beautiful, elegant, and ethereal, like a fairy who had mistakenly descended to the mortal realm—so stunning that it left one in awe.
The man's Deep Black Eyes flickered with a moment of astonishment, though it was fleeting and gone before anyone could catch it, including Xin'er.
At that moment, she was only filled with regret over her earlier actions towards him. She noticed the redness and swelling on his cheek, clearly indicating he must be in pain.
She shouldn't have acted so impulsively just now.
She wondered if he would be angry. But even if he was truly upset and let go of her, causing her to fall, it would be understandable, wouldn't it? After all, she had been a bit excessive earlier!
As Xin'er pondered these thoughts, the large hand that had been supporting her waist gently pulled her back to the shore.
Once she felt her feet firmly planted on solid ground again, Xin'er blinked in surprise and immediately said to the man before her without a second thought.
"Thank you."
