Rao Jie was momentarily stunned, instinctively thinking about the need to cook for Wu Rong. It was truly a reflex.
She found it somewhat amusing, but she indeed owed Long Yong a favor and had been wanting to treat him to a meal. This was an opportunity. After some thought, she decided she would let Wu Rong know later; it should be fine.
However, Rao Jie still forgot to turn on her phone. It wasn't until she and Long Yong arrived outside the school and found a satisfactory restaurant to sit down in that she remembered she needed to ask Wu Rong for leave.
When she finally turned on her phone, Wu Rong's WeChat message popped up first—it was sent half an hour ago!
"I'm waiting for you in the parking lot. Come over after you finish your exam."
Rao Jie gasped, then checked her missed calls. Sure enough, there was one call from him.
Her expression changed instantly.
Noticing Rao Jie’s unusual demeanor, Long Yong asked with concern, "What's wrong?"
Rao Jie wore a look of panic and said, "I just realized I didn't turn on my phone. Professor Wu seems to be waiting for me in the parking lot. How long has he been waiting?"
Long Yong's smile faded slightly. "Then call him back. If he doesn't mind, he can join us for dinner."
Rao Jie glanced around the nice environment. Although it was pleasant, based on her understanding of Wu Rong's standards, he wouldn’t come here.
Moreover, if Wu Rong was in the parking lot, did that mean he hadn’t left the school since dropping her off? Had he been waiting for her to finish her exam so he could take her home?
The thought of this possibility made Rao Jie feel both scared and touched.
Her emotions were extremely complicated as she hurriedly began packing her bag. "Professor Wu won't come here for dinner; I..."
Before Rao Jie could finish her sentence, Long Yong suddenly reached across the table and grabbed her arm, halting her frantic movements.
"Are you... really going back?" Long Yong's voice was calm and devoid of any humor now.
Rao Jie froze, realizing she was still in the middle of treating someone to a meal. How could she just leave? Although the situation with Professor Wu felt daunting and she hesitated to ask for leave, if she really walked away now, Rao Jie would feel guilty.
Though rationality had made its decision, Rao Jie stopped what she was doing and set her bag down. However, she couldn't control her expression.
Long Yong released her arm and sat across from her with an uncomfortable look.
Rao Jie felt anxious, furrowing her brows as she held her phone, contemplating whether to call or text back. Yet the guilt inside her grew increasingly uncontrollable.
For someone so proud to go this far for her while she considered ditching him... it simply felt wrong.
It was all her fault; if Bao Ming hadn't delayed her and she'd turned on her phone earlier, she would have seen Wu Rong's message right away.
Then she wouldn't have mindlessly gone out to dinner with Long Yong.
"I... I asked him to come over and try. If it doesn't work out, then forget it. I'll apologize to him later," Rao Jie said, her voice hoarse with nervousness.
Long Yong frowned slightly. He didn't want to see Rao Jie like this; he couldn't bear to put her in such a difficult position. Eating together was simple and could happen anytime, but making her feel awkward and upset might lead to her feeling bad for a while afterward. That was unnecessary.
Although Long Yong was unhappy, he was even more unwilling to see Rao Jie distressed. After thinking for a moment, just as she was about to dial the number, he said, "Ask him if he's still in the parking lot. If he is, you can go back and find him. If he's already left, then let it go."
