"Mother, as I said, you should stop spending money to support them. It's time they understand what life is like on just Father's salary!" Chen Qingyuan's tone was calm, but the words he spoke made Qing Luan wary.
Through their conversation, she learned some things.
The Zhu Clan came from a family of merchants, and the world looked down upon the vulgarity and scheming of merchants, which led to their wealth being disregarded due to their low status. As a result, the Zhu Clan was often looked down upon. Although Aunt Huang was a concubine of the Huang Family, she was still a lady from an official family and was quite favored by Old Madam Huang. This is why she went to great lengths to find a wife for her son who was a Merchant's Daughter, someone of low status, so that her own daughter could enjoy all the privileges of the main wife despite being a concubine.
Back in her room, Qing Luan lay on the soft couch, rubbing her slightly aching temples as she slowly processed everything she had learned.
The Chen Family was indeed not an ordinary kind of complicated.
Chen Qingluan, although a legitimate daughter, received no affection from her father and was of little use. With her own mother being looked down upon, how could she expect to fare any better?
Not wanting to die but finding herself reborn into such a home was hard for her to accept. Yet reality could not be changed; she had no choice but to accept it—her inherent pride would not allow even a hint of humility or cowardice. If she were truly humble or timid, she wouldn't have built her own Commercial Kingdom as an orphan.
"I need to think of a way to resolve the troubles at hand," she murmured softly, glancing at her frail figure and realizing it was time to take care of herself.
Originally, Chen Qingluan had a cold personality and felt somewhat inferior; she didn't like to talk. The maids and old women serving her were instigated by Aunt Huang, constantly reminding her how miserable her current situation was—having been rejected before marriage. Any proud woman would find it unbearable… This pressure ultimately drove Chen Qingluan to take her own life.
Those maids and old women had no idea that Chen Qingluan had already changed; they still thought she was the timid and insecure girl she used to be. They exchanged glances, plotting how to fulfill their tasks in order to gain more rewards.
After dinner, Qing Luan remained unwilling to move, simply closing her eyes to rest while her mind wandered in chaotic thoughts… A loud crash interrupted her reverie. She opened her deep black eyes and stared at the door that had been carelessly flung open. A delicate and slender maid entered with a basin of water. Upon meeting her gaze, the maid's heart skipped a beat; her hand trembled slightly as she smiled and said, "Fourth Miss, I am here to assist you with your washing."
With a slight raise of her brow, the sharpness hidden deep within her black eyes returned to calmness. She said nothing but shifted her small frame over to the bronze mirror, gazing at the disdainful expression of the maid reflected back at her…
“Fourth Miss,” the maid continued to chatter, her hands moving busily as she spoke. “Even though you are the legitimate daughter, your father is active in court. Now that you’ve been rejected, people will surely laugh at him.”
With her long hair casually draped over her shoulders, she gazed into the mirror at the person behind her who kept rambling on, subtly hinting at how embarrassing this was for her. It was clear that she should have ended this situation long ago.
“Qi'er, what nonsense are you talking about?” A sharp voice interrupted Qi'er’s incessant chatter. Qin'er stood at the door, holding a stack of neatly folded clothes, her eyes glaring with disdain and anger at Qi'er. “What’s got you so worked up?”
Qi'er’s expression changed instantly; she blinked and then smiled brightly. “Sister Qin'er, why are you so angry? I’m just here serving Fourth Miss as usual. What have I done to upset you?” She thought to herself that everyone had the same idea—if Fourth Miss were gone, they would all receive better treatment. Yet Qin'er chose to side with Fourth Miss and wouldn’t let them bully her. Hmph, she was just a girl; did she really think she was in charge?
