She said with a hint of reproach, "Jing Shu, it's been seven years since you married Xiao An. When will I be able to hold my grandchild?"
"If you can't have children, you might as well step aside."
Those last words were heavy.
The mocking expressions on the faces around me pierced through me like sharp swords.
I could no longer endure such humiliation.
Suddenly standing up, the teacup in my hand tilted, and scalding tea splashed onto my hand, but I felt nothing.
Turning around, I took the divorce agreement from my bag, stepped forward, and with all my strength, threw it onto Shi Ann's face.
Holding back tears, I bitterly said, "Fine, I'll step aside for her now. Are you satisfied?"
Instantly, the large banquet hall fell into silence.
Ignoring the astonished gazes of everyone, I grabbed my coat and walked out the door.
With a loud bang, I shut out all the accusations behind me.
Since this was what he wanted, then so be it.
The night wind carried the chill of late autumn and blew against my face, yet it did nothing to cool the surging anger and grievance within me.
The sound of my high heels clicking on the stone path echoed sharply in the quiet night, making it feel particularly jarring.
Outside the villa, the streetlights elongated my shadow, making me appear lonely and desolate.
Shi Ann stared at Lin Jingshu's resolute figure, momentarily stunned.
On the dining table, spilled tea, overturned chairs, and the shocked expressions of everyone seemed like a still painting frozen before his eyes.
Then, as if suddenly awakened, he sprang up and hurried after me.
"Jing Shu!"
In the restaurant, Mother Shi erupted in anger after a brief moment of shock.
She slammed her hand on the table; the remnants of tea in her cup sloshed dangerously close to spilling over.
"This is outrageous! There’s no sense of decorum! To storm out over such a trivial matter—what kind of behavior is that?!"
Song Wan quickly got up, patting Mother Shi's back, and softly advised, "Aunt, please calm down. Jing Shu is just acting on impulse; don't take it to heart."
Mother Shi's anger intensified at her words. "Acting on impulse? I think she did it on purpose! She deliberately embarrassed us!"
"She has been married into the Shi Family for seven years and hasn't even given us a child. How dare she show us that kind of attitude? I’ve wanted her out of the Shi Family for a long time!"
Mother Shi's voice was sharp and piercing, echoing in the empty dining hall.
Hearing her speak like this, Song Wan could barely suppress a smile at the corners of her mouth. She feigned concern while patiently persuading Mother Shi.
I stumbled my way to the garden outside the villa. The cool night breeze tousled my disheveled hair and helped clear my muddled thoughts a little. Leaning against a tree by the roadside, I gasped for breath, feeling a dull pain in my chest.
"Jing Shu!" Shi Ann caught up with me, grabbing my arm. "Where are you going? Can't we talk this out?" His tone carried a hint of urgency and reproach.
I forcefully shook off his hand, turned around, and looked at him coldly. "What is there to talk about? If I let you have your way, won't everyone be satisfied?" My voice was hoarse and trembled slightly.
Shi Ann stood frozen for a moment, watching my retreating figure. Under the dim light of the streetlamp, his expression was inscrutable.
Then he stepped forward, his strides firm and resolute. I ran to the end of the garden and leaned against an ancient Phoenix Tree, coughing violently while clutching my chest.
This Phoenix Tree was one I had planted myself when I first married into the Shi Family; now it had grown lush and full. It stood as a silent witness to all my joys and sorrows, now bearing witness to my despair and heartbreak.
A metallic taste surged in my dry throat as I bit down hard on my lip, the taste of blood spreading in my mouth.
"Jing Shu!" Shi Ann chased after me again, reaching out in an attempt to grab my arm once more.
I sidestepped away from him, looking up with icy eyes. "Don't touch me!"
"I don't want to divorce you! Come home with me, okay?" His tone was almost pleading.
I stared at him blankly; his eyes were filled with a regret I couldn't understand.
In an instant, all kinds of thoughts rushed through my mind. I calmed down. "Alright, let's go home," I said calmly.
