In a situation where they were waiting for rescue, how could one get along amicably with someone they had a rather ordinary relationship with?
This was the thought running through Xu Nuan's mind at that moment.
A few steps away from her, scanning the snowy landscape, stood Deng Yinyin.
All around was a vast expanse of white, and a few meters away loomed the cliff. The only companion she had was the impatient-looking person nearby.
This was Xu Nuan's current predicament, and she couldn't help but sigh.
Just yesterday, they had successfully reached the summit. Despite enduring unbearable cold, they had failed to find any trace of the Special Tree. Disheartened, they had to descend, hoping to discover a Miracle.
Today, as they made their way down, they encountered a black bear once again. Unlike the last time when it merely announced its territory, this group of bears charged at them in a frenzy. Their massive bodies sent everyone scattering in panic. The men had initially planned to divert the bears while the women rushed down the mountain first. However, those bears indiscriminately chose to chase after the clustered women instead.
In the chaos, Deng Yinyin and Xu Nuan stepped onto a patch of loose snow at the edge of the cliff and fell down. The height caused the wandering bears to lose interest and leave, while the other four stayed behind to search for Xu Nuan and Deng Yinyin, slowly making their way down from another slope.
This ensured that they wouldn't miss each other in the snow, but now Xu Nuan faced the challenge of spending a long time with someone she barely knew.
Feeling awkward, Xu Nuan simply sat down in the snow, resting while pondering why the bears only attacked women and why they had quickly retreated after she and Deng Yinyin fell.
After the blizzard, brilliant sunlight once again graced the earth. Unfortunately, this sunlight brought no warmth to those playing this game.
The cold sunlight perfectly described the rays that shone at that moment.
With one hand propping up her chin and her elbow resting on her knee, Xu Nuan's calm gaze occasionally drifted towards Deng Yinyin, who stood still without making any further movements as time flowed by.
It was the girls who had attracted the bears' pursuit; it was also these two who caused them to abandon their chase. One of them had drawn in the bears.
Xu Nuan withdrew her palm and instead pointed her index finger at her chin, suddenly realizing something as she looked at Deng Yinyin.
"I remember, you brought honey, right?"
Deng Yinyin, lost in her own thoughts, furrowed her brows and responded to Xu Nuan's words with a rather unpleasant tone.
"Yes, I did. Are you hungry now?"
Xu Nuan blinked, somewhat confused by Deng Yinyin's attitude. She simply attributed this demeanor to their lack of familiarity and didn’t think too much about it.
"I'm not hungry," Xu Nuan replied seriously. "I just thought that bears love honey."
"Huh?" Deng Yinyin's voice suddenly rose, and her beautifully shaped brows twitched.
"Are you saying that those black bears were attracted by me? That it's my fault you fell?"
"Huh?"
Sitting on the ground, Xu Nuan looked up slightly at Deng Yinyin, whose elevated position added a touch of disdain to her expression.
"I just wanted to ask if the jar of honey was opened," Xu Nuan said, rubbing her sore neck with an expression as calm as still water.
"After all, I can smell the honey from here."
"..." After a moment of blankness, Deng Yinyin snorted and continued in a loud voice.
"That's none of your business!"
Xu Nuan, who was somewhat oblivious, finally realized that Deng Yinyin did not like her. Previously, it might have just been indifference, but now it had turned into outright dissatisfaction.
What could make such a lively girl treat her with such hostility? Xu Nuan smirked slightly; she wasn't interested in finding out. After all, the day they would part ways was not far off.
However, her seemingly emotionless smile took on a different meaning in Deng Yinyin's eyes.
"I," Deng Yinyin suddenly threw down her backpack, the heavy bag sinking into the snow and kicking up a flurry of snowflakes.
Despite the commotion, Xu Nuan remained seated in the snow, appearing unaffected by the outside world.
"You have a boyfriend, right? I heard from Tang Jing Shu that his name is Qin Yaojie, isn't it?" Deng Yinyin's eyes seemed to ignite with anger, which only fueled her irritation.
"Yes," Xu Nuan replied coolly, "but that has nothing to do with you."
Her heart was in turmoil; the name Qin Yaojie had become almost taboo for her.
"Hmph," Deng Yinyin scoffed as she strode toward Xu Nuan, wearing an unmistakable mocking smile as she looked down at her.
"You really are shameless. You clearly have a boyfriend but still flirt with other men. How can you do this to your boyfriend? What about Gu Ze?"
The anger that had been building up in Deng Yinyin over the past few days erupted at that moment.
"You’re just an indiscreet woman. I really don’t understand how your boyfriend could fall for you. And Gu Ze too—how could he possibly like you and always defend you? Hmph!"
Deng Yinyin perfectly embodied what it meant to speak her mind without restraint.
Xu Nuan no longer maintained her calm facade; she stood up directly and met Deng Yinyin's gaze, a sarcastic smile playing on her lips.
“Deng Yinyin,” Xu Nuan's voice was soft, but Deng Yinyin still shivered slightly. From her perspective, Xu Nuan's light brown eyes had brewed into an unfathomable deep sea.
“Being straightforward is a good trait, but speaking without thinking is just ridiculous.”
“You!”
Deng Yinyin widened her eyes, pointing a finger at Xu Nuan. She took a step forward as if intending to strike Xu Nuan, but abruptly halted her movement.
The smile at the corner of Xu Nuan's lips remained intact. “Pointing at someone is impolite. If you want to challenge me, that would be foolish.”
Xu Nuan was satisfied to see Deng Yinyin retreat a few steps because of her words, the mocking smile on her face tinged with malice.
“Let me clarify a few points. First, your feelings for Gu Ze are your own business. Please don’t act like a dog and lash out at others; I don’t want to see such an ugly display. Second, if you like Gu Ze, go confess your feelings. Aren't you always bold and straightforward? Don’t back down on this matter.”
Perhaps due to the excessive malice in Xu Nuan's words, even though she stood still, Deng Yinyin kept retreating until she tripped over herself and fell to the ground, her terrified gaze beginning to fade.
“Third,” Xu Nuan continued relentlessly, “please don’t utter those three words again; you have no right. If you do, I won’t mind your filthy language. Fourth, I am currently single and have the right to seek another partner.”
Xu Nuan was pleased to see Deng Yinyin’s pupils constrict and her chest rise and fall violently. Her lips moved as if trying to speak but no sound came out. She couldn’t imagine that the seemingly quiet and easy-to-bully Xu Nuan could be so merciless when angry.
“Of course, I like Qin Yaojie and won’t be with any other man. So please don’t consider me your imaginary rival; I can’t afford your constant targeting. As for you, go after whoever you like; that’s your right. Ah,” Xu Nuan deepened her smile.
“However, I think you only dare to act behind someone’s back and can’t face the person you like directly. Tsk tsk, what a failure.”
Every word struck Deng Yinyin hard. It was precisely because Xu Nuan spoke the truth that these bluntly mocking words caused Deng Yinyin to gradually crumble until she covered her face and began to cry uncontrollably.
The actions she had taken in the company and in the game, using friends and innocent people, had all failed to achieve her goals.
Xu Nuan had no idea what Deng Yinyin had done. Her last words were merely a reflection of her distaste for someone she had encountered in college, whose personality resembled Deng Yinyin's and whose actions had made her feel nauseous. Thus, her comments today were tinged with misplaced anger.
Shrugging her shoulders, Xu Nuan's expression returned to calmness as her gaze swept past the sobbing Deng Yinyin and landed on Gu Ze and the others who had just appeared nearby.
The four of them had initially breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing Xu Nuan and Deng Yinyin safe, but their expressions changed drastically when they noticed the pained figure of Deng Yinyin sitting on the ground and the composed Xu Nuan standing nearby. Each of them began to speculate in their minds.
Xu Nuan remained steadfast, watching as the four hurried over. Xu Hang, Xie Huai, and Tang Jingshu surrounded Deng Yinyin, either asking what had happened or offering gentle comfort.
Only Gu Ze approached Xu Nuan directly. He smiled and said, "It's great to see you both are okay," before softly inquiring, "What happened to her?"
Xu Nuan and Gu Ze locked eyes in silence for a few seconds, ignoring everyone else around them.
"She must have been affected by my crying," Xu Nuan finally stated with remarkable calmness.
Gu Ze was taken aback but showed no anger.
This reaction caused a flicker of light to flash quickly in Xu Nuan's eyes.
However, the others did not react as calmly.
The first to lose his temper was Xu Hang. This usually reserved man stood up abruptly and strode toward Xu Nuan. But seeing Gu Ze silently standing beside her made him pause slightly before he leaned down to look at Xu Nuan, his voice heavy with anger.
"What is going on? I thought we were all comrades."
Xu Hang's gaze was firmly locked onto Xu Nuan.
"If you think we are companions, then speak the truth. I do not want to keep someone with ulterior motives in the team."
"Hang, that's a heavy accusation. You should take that back until we clarify the situation," Gu Ze interjected, worried about what irreversible consequences might arise. Moreover, he didn't think Deng Yinyin's tears were such a big deal.
Xu Hang's face darkened ominously.
Even the usually bold Xie Huai stepped forward.
"Deng Yinyin is a very strong girl. If you hadn't done something so outrageous, she wouldn't have lost her composure like this."
Xie Huai's gaze was also fixed on Xu Nuan.
"Hah," Xu Nuan chuckled lightly, drawing surprised looks from Gu Ze and anger from the other two men.
"You all, are you still minors? How can you have such naive thoughts?"
