The simple three words made the faces of the other five change instantly.
Calmness turned into unease, seriousness into frivolity, and joy into despair.
This scene could be described as a perfect storm; originally, they humans had no way to deal with a shark armed only with cold weapons, and now even their means of escape had failed them. Wasn't this cutting off all their avenues for retreat?
After a moment of chilling realization, Xu Nuan began to think of a way out. She had to believe that there was always a way to survive, right?
Her gaze fell on several oars beneath the deck. Rather than confronting the shark, Xu Nuan pulled out the damp oars and waved them toward Xie Huai, Tang Jingshu, and Deng Yinyin.
"Do you know how to row? Even if it's slow, we can create some distance."
Xu Nuan tucked away her panic and reminded herself to stay calm, hoping to pass that calmness on to the others.
Tang Jingshu reacted the fastest, grabbing an oar and choosing a side before starting to row with all her might. However, she wasn't very skilled. Xu Nuan waved at Xie Huai and pointed at the clumsy Deng Yinyin before running over to Tang Jingshu's side.
Understanding what needed to be done, Xie Huai joined Deng Yinyin, who was also inexperienced, and they began to row together.
Surprisingly, the four of them quickly found their rhythm and started rowing in sync. However, those who were closer to the surface of the sea became prime targets for the intelligent shark.
Gu Ze and Xu Hang exchanged knowing glances and each chose a side to fend off the shark's attacks. The shark seemed to take a brief pause; after all, its injured eye was hindering its movements.
They had a plan that showed some effectiveness, but it paled in comparison to the shark's overwhelming strength and destructive power.
The continuous crashing and biting from the shark severely damaged the boat. As Xu Nuan rowed while keeping an eye on their vessel's condition, she realized that at this rate, they could barely hold out for fifteen minutes before either water began leaking into the boat or they fell into the sea at the mercy of the shark.
Xu Nuan began analyzing their current situation. The only way to resolve this crisis was to make the shark abandon its attack; only then could they use their boat and oars to find land.
Making the shark give up its attack?
That was no easy feat.
They would either have to kill the shark or severely injure it enough to render it incapable of fighting back—both options were incredibly difficult.
Xu Nuan paddled almost numbly, her eyes darting around as her mind raced.
When her gaze fell on Gu Ze, who was watching the shark with keen intensity, she spoke up.
"Have you thought of any way out?"
Gu Ze didn't turn his head, speaking slowly and deliberately.
"We can only get rid of it."
Xu Nuan agreed with this, but replied, "The disparity in strength is too great."
"Have we not faced situations with greater disparities before?" Gu Ze remained calm.
Xu Nuan fell silent. In this game, those who had once lived in bustling cities had created many miracles. They had overcome physical limitations, endured harsh environments, and fought fierce beasts, accomplishing things they had never imagined possible. The uncertainty lingered before success, and even after achieving it, there was still a sense of unease.
"So what should we do?"
Determined to take action, Xu Nuan decided that the six of them would create a miracle together. In this game, nothing was impossible.
Gu Ze glanced at Xu Nuan with some surprise before breaking into a knowing smile.
"That’s definitely your style."
With that, Gu Ze began to share his thoughts.
"We have to face the fact that we don’t have firearms and lack powerful weapons to inflict external damage on it. So how about we approach it from the inside?"
Tang Jingshu, sitting close to Xu Nuan and Gu Ze, didn’t understand and focused intently on paddling, eager to shake off the injured yet still formidable shark.
"Are you suggesting we drug it?"
Xu Nuan quickly grasped the idea and pulled out her well-prepared backpack. With one hand, she paddled, while the other rummaged through her belongings.
"What kind of drug could harm it?"
Xu Nuan realized that everything she had brought was beneficial to the body.
"I'm still thinking," Xu Hang replied promptly. "The medicines we brought are non-lethal, but perhaps a combination of a few might be toxic. Let me recall some methods I've seen before."
Xu Nuan nodded silently, but her suspicion towards Gu Ze deepened in her heart.
She knew Gu Ze was exceptional and could become a formidable person in many aspects. However, in everyday life, there wouldn't be opportunities to train in the sea or learn how to combine various medicines into poison, would there?
This person is too adapted to this game.
As Xu Nuan reached this conclusion, she discovered a canister in her backpack.
"I actually have concentrated sulfuric acid—wait, there's concentrated sulfuric acid in the Supply Station?"
Xu Nuan pulled out a bottle of liquid with surprise and met Gu Ze's equally astonished gaze.
"You want me to pour this into the shark's mouth? What then?"
"Burn its mouth and esophagus; it will either become more aggressive or give up."
Gu Ze answered sincerely.
"That sounds a bit risky."
Xu Nuan hesitated, shaking the bottle in her hand. Just then, the shark—whatever it meant by giving up—suddenly slammed against the boat. The waves were getting rougher, causing the entire vessel to tilt at a steep angle. With one hand holding the paddle and the other clutching the bottle, Xu Nuan had no support and was thrown off balance by inertia, tumbling overboard.
"Hiss."
Gu Ze had not managed to grab Xu Nuan before he noticed that the shark had lunged to the edge of the boat, its jaws clamping down on Tang Jingshu's leg, which was still dazed from the impact.
It wasn't until the pain shot through her leg that Tang Jingshu reacted, frantically swinging the paddle at the shark. However, it was futile; she couldn't control her body and could only let the shark drag her slowly toward the sea.
Gu Ze had no choice but to abandon checking on the fallen Xu Nuan and instead grabbed an axe to help Tang Jingshu.
Meanwhile, Xu Hang and Xie Huai also realized what was happening and rushed over to assist.
Xu Hang swung fiercely at the shark's jaw, each strike drawing blood. Finally, when the shark's jaw was a bloody mess, it released Tang Jingshu's leg.
Tang Jingshu's leg bore scattered bloodstains, injuries from where the teeth had bitten into her flesh.
At this moment, Xu Nuan stumbled back onto the deck, feeling the pain from her scraped skin. She scanned around, trying to locate the bottle containing concentrated sulfuric acid that had been thrown away, when she suddenly heard Xu Hang's shout.
"Someone come check if Tang Jingshu's bones are injured!"
Xu Nuan abandoned her search for the bottle and, along with Deng Yinyin, dragged the unconscious Tang Jingshu aside to begin an examination.
Deng Yinyin was still inexperienced in assessing injuries and hurriedly pulled out some medicine from her backpack, nervously watching Xu Nuan.
Xu Nuan carefully examined Tang Jingshu's right leg and then let out a heavy sigh of relief.
"It's just a deep bite; it hasn't damaged any bones. We need to stop the bleeding and bandage it up quickly, then give her some anti-inflammatory medication."
"Thank goodness."
Deng Yinyin clasped her hands together in silent prayer before starting to work.
However, the shark had become even more agitated. If they didn't deal with it soon, not only would their boat be lost, but they themselves would be in grave danger as well.
Xu Nuan was bandaging Tang Jingshu when she heard Xu Hang and Xie Huai's voices of persuasion.
"Gu Ze, this is too dangerous; you can't do this!"
The familiar name made both Xu Nuan and Deng Yinyin turn around simultaneously. They saw Gu Ze tying a rope around himself, with the other end attached to an axe. In his hand, he held a short knife, and he was standing on the edge of the boat, leaning forward, swinging the axe with one hand.
"Gu Ze, what are you doing?"
Deng Yinyin stood up in agitation, but after taking a couple of steps, she stumbled due to the waves and had to grab the railing to steady herself.
"This is dangerous! You can't handle the shark alone!"
Deng Yinyin joined in the persuasion.
Xu Nuan frowned; she still didn't understand what Gu Ze was planning to do.
She glanced at the axe and then at the width of the shark. Suddenly, a guess popped into her mind.
Was Gu Ze planning to go into the water and use the rope and axe to bind the shark so it couldn't move temporarily?
It was too risky! The chances of success were too low!
As Xu Nuan reached this conclusion, she fixed her gaze on Gu Ze, who was preparing to jump into the water. To her surprise, Gu Ze turned back to look at her and smiled.
"Find the injection in my backpack and mix it with concentrated sulfuric acid; it will have a strong lethal effect."
Xu Nuan pursed her lips, her expression complex, but she nodded nonetheless.
Seeing this, Gu Ze smiled again and jumped into the water without hesitation.
At the same time, Xu Nuan finished bandaging Tang Jingshu and pulled Deng Yinyin, who wanted to head toward the other side of the boat, instructing her.
"He will be fine. You take care of Tang Jing Shu and help me see where the bottle containing concentrated sulfuric acid fell."
Xu Nuan's words were quick and urgent, even carrying a hint of command. Deng Yinyin, caught off guard, could only nod in response.
With that, Xu Nuan felt reassured enough to rummage through Gu Ze's backpack, sifting through a pile of medicine bottles.
Meanwhile, Xu Hang and Xie Huai stood tensely at the edge of the boat, watching Gu Ze's movements. Suddenly, a large wave crashed over them, and Xie Huai lost his footing and fell into the water. Xu Hang frantically reached out to grab him, abandoning his role of distracting the shark.
Gu Ze, who had originally planned to dive into the water and sneak up on the shark from behind, instantly became the shark's primary target.
In the water, the shark was a king. Even though this particular shark wasn't very large, it still made Gu Ze acutely aware of the danger. Gu Ze rarely backed down; as the shark approached, he held his axe in both hands to block its gaping maw, skillfully maneuvering the axe around its massive teeth before pulling it back. As the shark swung its tail and changed direction, Gu Ze flipped onto its back, preparing to slide around to bind it from behind.
On the other side, Xu Hang finally managed to pull Xie Huai back up. Just as he intended to help Gu Ze, he noticed that the shark was suddenly darting up and down near the sea surface. Gu Ze, already exhausted from exertion, couldn't withstand such relentless movement; one hand slipped away, and he fell back into the water, where the agile shark clamped down on most of his body with its jaws.
"Gu Ze!"
Xu Hang screamed in horror.
Just as Xu Nuan found the medicine she was looking for, she froze in shock. Turning around, she felt as if she had stepped into a frozen wasteland.
