Xie Huai was also a man. No matter how weak and useless he appeared on a daily basis, after being beaten by Xu Hang, he swiftly drew the short knife from his waist. Xu Hang, caught off guard and unarmed, received a long gash on his arm, blood splattering onto his face. To his surprise, this jolted him awake, and he quickly flipped over to pin down Xie Huai.
Seeing that Xu Hang seemed to have calmed down, Xu Nuan hurried to find Gu Ze.
Gu Ze was physically stronger than Zhang Xiao and had trained in combat sports. He initially launched a fierce attack, gaining the upper hand for a moment. However, Zhang Xiao was no slouch; his foundation far exceeded Gu Ze's, allowing him to defend well and counterattack appropriately.
Before long, both of them were bruised and battered. Fortunately, neither had drawn their weapons; it appeared that they only had some bruises and cuts on their faces, while their bodies were covered by their clothing.
Xu Nuan noticed that Zhang Xiao had no intention of using his weapon. Was it because he didn't want to expose himself, or was Gu Ze someone Zhang Xiao couldn't harm?
Xu Nuan felt a bit disdainful of herself for pondering this at such a critical moment. Just as she reached Gu Ze and Zhang Xiao, intending to pull them apart, Deng Yinyin charged at her with the short knife in hand, swinging it without hesitation.
With limited options for evasion, Xu Nuan found it difficult to dodge and ended up with a tear in her sleeve.
"That was close!"
Xu Nuan shouted as she circled behind Deng Yinyin and struck her hard on the back. Caught off guard, Deng Yinyin stumbled forward. Xu Nuan stepped up quickly, pressing one hand down on Deng Yinyin's hand while using the other to hold her body in place before turning to look at Xu Hang.
"What’s going on here? Why is everyone suddenly out of sorts?"
"I don't know," Xu Hang replied, feeling frustrated that he had been caught off guard and had inadvertently injured his own teammate. "Just keep Deng Yinyin restrained; don’t hurt her!"
"Got it."
Xu Nuan felt some frustration herself but knew she shouldn't act recklessly since she was still aware of her surroundings. Seeing Deng Yinyin pinned down and shouting continuously only added to her irritation but also provided some relief.
While venting her frustration, she kept an eye on the fight between Gu Ze and Zhang Xiao.
Zhang Xiao had no intention of drawing her weapon; she was quite pleased to see Gu Ze take a beating. Unfortunately, Gu Ze was also getting hit, and his once handsome face now bore several unsightly bruises.
However, she couldn't intervene at this moment, and she wasn't sure if Gu Ze would appreciate her stepping in once he regained consciousness.
Making decisions based on respect for others was the wise approach.
While the two were busy exchanging blows, Xu Nuan took a moment to ponder the strange behavior of everyone around her.
Had they all suddenly lost their minds? Were they drugged? Had they inhaled some kind of toxic gas?
Xu Nuan spun around, her gaze eventually landing on the shimmering butterflies nearby.
"Could it be that these butterflies are the problem?" she blurted out.
"Is that possible?" Xu Hang nodded, squinting as he observed the glowing butterflies while trying to restrain the still-fidgeting Xie Huai.
Suddenly, Xu Nuan recalled something and quickly asked, "How did you wake up just now?" She glanced around. "This fighting isn't going to solve anything; we need to get them back to their senses."
"I don't know," Xu Hang shook his head, equally puzzled.
"Why didn't you lose consciousness?"
Xu Nuan shook her head. She didn't believe she had a special constitution or a secret mission; it was clear that they had encountered something she hadn't, which led to this situation.
With that thought, the possibility of her guess seemed quite high. Xu Nuan quickly recalled everything they had come across since entering this stage.
After considering it all, Xu Nuan still found those butterflies suspicious.
However, before she could analyze the reason, a thick fog suddenly enveloped their space.
Everything around was shrouded in mist; nothing was visible. Xu Nuan realized that Deng Yinyin, whom she had pinned to the ground, was gone. Looking around, Gu Ze and the others were also missing, and the shimmering butterflies had vanished as well.
The ground was a vast expanse of white, leaving her all alone.
Xu Nuan remembered having a similar dream before—standing in a bustling city where everyone walked back and forth while she stood in a corner. Before she could gather her thoughts, everyone had disappeared.
A world of one, an adventure alone.
Just as Xu Nuan knew she was dreaming back then, she also understood that she was awake now.
So how could she explain her current predicament?
As Xu Nuan pondered this, the fog slowly began to dissipate. A smile appeared on her face, but before it could linger for even a second, it froze in place.
She finally saw the environment she was in.
She was standing on a large rock, looking around. The water stretched endlessly, a gray hue so close to transparent that it held no other color, and naturally, there were no other people in sight.
Fear replaced her smile.
She was afraid of the water, struggling to suppress her trembling. Yet the scenery around her resembled an ocean, oppressive in its color. She crouched down, hugging herself tightly, and told herself, "This is a dream; I am dreaming."
But a voice inside her insisted that this was not a dream; it was reality, and she needed to escape from here.
There were others like Xu Nuan who had similar experiences.
Xie Huai had completely forgotten about losing control and fighting with Xu Hang. The only memory he retained was of walking along when he encountered thick fog, and then in the blink of an eye, everyone had vanished.
He had always been timid. He understood that if he hadn’t been with Xu Hang’s team, his weakness would have led to his demise, becoming prey for the beasts. Suddenly left all alone, he felt utterly helpless.
He walked on, the fog showing no signs of dissipating. As someone who was nearsighted, his field of vision was shrinking further. Even so, he called out for the others' names as best as he could, longing to find his teammates quickly.
After wandering endlessly for a long time, he finally heard someone calling his name—a familiar voice, a woman’s voice. Xie Huai felt a surge of happiness; whether it was the girl he admired, Deng Yinyin, or the capable Xu Nuan, both brought him comfort.
“I’m here!”
As Xie Huai responded while running toward the source of the voice, he began to discern who it belonged to as he drew closer.
It was Tang Jingshu.
The deceased Tang Jingshu.
Xie Huai's face turned pale as a familiar scene unfolded once more.
Tang Jingshu was coiled by the giant python, calling out for help.
"Don't be afraid, I'll save you right away!"
In that moment, Xie Huai believed that Tang Jingshu was still alive and that he had a chance for redemption. But as he rushed toward Tang Jingshu and the giant python, the creature mercilessly swallowed her whole.
He still couldn't save Tang Jingshu.
"So it turns out, I was dreaming."
Xie Huai murmured to himself, watching as the mist around him gradually dissipated. Then, Tang Jingshu appeared again, wearing that familiar Tactical Jacket, still the elegant beauty he remembered, but her expression was unfamiliar.
"Xie Huai, I hate you so much, I hate you so much."
"Xie Huai, why didn't you save me? Why?"
Xie Huai shook his head and stepped back as Tang Jingshu floated toward him.
"No, I wanted to save you, but I was scared. I was scared... I was afraid of dying."
Then Xie Huai heard another man's voice, accusing him.
"Why aren't you the one who died, you coward!"
"No, no," Xie Huai shook his head, suddenly turning and running away quickly. "I don't want to die, I still don't want to die!"
The scenery around him began to warp into something bizarre. Memories of his time with Tang Jingshu flooded back—his childhood experiences, the cold treatment he endured, his introverted and timid personality, his parents' disappointment in him, his dislike for certain teachers, the exclusion from classmates, the reprimands from superiors, and the disdainful gaze of Deng Yinyin.
"Right, Deng Yinyin."
Xie Huai shouted her name as if it could bring him immense comfort.
He liked Deng Yinyin. When he first joined the company and was alone during his commutes, silent and withdrawn, he found himself drawn to her.
Even after entering society, Deng Yinyin remained lively and straightforward, getting along well with all the female employees in the company. She loved to laugh, and when she did, her eyes sparkled beautifully. She always thought she was overweight and controlled her diet, but to him, her figure was perfect. She never complained about promotions; she felt that working in a position she loved for a lifetime was more than enough.
Of course, Deng Yinyin had her flaws—she could be a bit infatuated with handsome men, got excited easily when seeing them, sometimes said hurtful things, and occasionally revealed others' secrets.
Yet even these flaws seemed endearing to him. However, there was one thing about Deng Yinyin that he couldn't accept: the person she liked was Gu Ze.
Of all people, it had to be Gu Ze.
Gu Ze was everything Xie Huai was not.
Gu Ze was eloquent and skilled with computers—a true technical expert—yet he was also handsome and charming. He was gentle and didn't engage frivolously with women nor resorted to underhanded tactics for promotions. To exaggerate a bit, eighty percent of the women in the company were captivated by Gu Ze's charm; yet he remained single and never toyed with anyone's feelings.
For instance, Gu Ze didn't like Deng Yinyin at all; he never gave her a chance. In doing so, he not only hurt her heart but also made her feelings for him grow deeper.
He was jealous of Gu Ze; he hated Gu Ze.
He wished he could end Gu Ze's life right then and there.
What Xie Huai didn't know was that the person he cared about, Deng Yinyin, was in the thick fog and did not see him.
At that moment, Deng Yinyin felt despair and betrayal.
She was surrounded by a group of grotesque beasts, while Gu Ze and Xu Nuan were a few dozen meters away, engrossed in their own world, completely oblivious to the danger she was in.
"Gu Ze, help me! Save me!"
Deng Yinyin screamed with all her might, but Gu Ze ignored her. That woman named Xu Nuan even turned to look at her provocatively, wrapping her arms around Gu Ze's neck and demanding a kiss from him.
"Ah! Why don’t you just die!"
She realized she had been performing a one-woman show all along, just a pitiful creature begging for help from others. No one came to her aid; she longed for Gu Ze's affection, yet he treated her like weeds.
"I won't accept this! I refuse to accept this!"
