After a conversation with Gu Ze, Xu Nuan found herself confusedly admitting to his identity as the Pursuer.
But did the Pursuer even need to be acknowledged?
At that moment, Xu Nuan's mind was a jumble, and she couldn't sort anything out. Then she caught sight of Gu Ze's sly smile. When she rubbed her eyes and looked again, she saw a long-lost gentle smile on his lips.
Admitting to such an identity didn't seem like a big deal, Xu Nuan thought, and she decided not to dwell on it. It appeared that they had somewhat awkwardly returned to a state where they could talk freely, exchange information, and tease each other as they used to.
However, some things could never go back to the way they were.
"Let me lay down the ground rules," Xu Nuan was not going to let Gu Ze bask in his triumph so easily.
"What you do is your business, but if you overstep your bounds, you'll have to face the consequences."
Xu Nuan reached for the short knife at her waist, realizing that it was what gave her the most sense of security.
Knowing when to back off, Gu Ze smiled and agreed. After all, there were many days ahead; once he eased up, given this woman's soft-hearted nature, his future days would be much easier.
Seeing Gu Ze smile so brightly made Xu Nuan feel that a short knife might not pose much of a threat to him, so she added, "I will carry plenty of Muscle Relaxant with me."
Noticing Gu Ze's smile stiffen slightly at her words, Xu Nuan nodded in satisfaction and prepared to turn toward the shade. She realized that she had probably been under the sun for too long, which was why her head felt so muddled. What was she even doing?
She deliberately ignored the sudden lightness in her heart.
"Nuan, your face..."
As Xu Nuan turned around, she suddenly heard Gu Ze's surprised voice and the sound of him hurriedly approaching.
What was this guy trying to do again?
In Xu Nuan's mind, Gu Ze's image had already dropped to a negative value.
With no choice, she turned around, intending to throw a sarcastic remark at Gu Ze, only to find his hands already on her face, rubbing it with his fingertips.
Suddenly, she felt her face burning hot. Indeed, she couldn't trust this man who liked to take advantage of her.
Drawing her knife, Xu Nuan glared fiercely at Gu Ze.
"What are you doing?"
Her voice was chillingly sinister.
Gu Ze showed no fear of the short blade; instead, he asked sincerely and with confusion, "Nuan, you seem to have an allergy. There are red spots on your face."
Having lived in the wild for so long and still being lively and energetic, Xu Nuan believed she had a strong constitution and was not allergic to anything.
Initially thinking this was just another excuse for Gu Ze to take advantage of her, she hesitated. But seeing the seriousness on his face made her believe him a little. She swatted his hand away and lifted the knife, using its reflection to examine her face closely.
Gu Ze, forced to step back by Xu Nuan's swift movement with the knife, thought that his future paths might become somewhat difficult because of these weapons. Roses are lovely but come with thorns.
Using the blade’s edge, Xu Nuan could see her face more clearly and was horrified to discover many red dots scattered across it.
In reality, most of the red spots were below her nose, but as a woman who cared about her appearance, Xu Nuan defined it as a lot.
"What am I experiencing? But I'm not allergic to anything! What's with these red spots? Will drinking the Antidote help?"
From Xu Nuan's series of illogical questions, Gu Ze realized that her brain had completely short-circuited, unable to accept this reality.
"Actually," Gu Ze thought that as the Pursuer, he should comfort Xu Nuan properly at this moment.
"Even with these red spots, you still look beautiful and cute."
To make his words more convincing, Gu Ze even used Xu Nuan's favorite fruit as an example.
"Look at strawberries; even if they have a few blemishes, they still look great and taste delicious."
This was a failed attempt at consolation.
Gu Ze glanced at the red marks on the back of his hand and smiled contentedly.
Indeed, he enjoyed this mode of interaction; it was best if those who came to occupy Xu Nuan's heart stayed far away.
As Xu Nuan struggled with the red spots on her face, she suddenly heard Deng Yinyin's scream. This time, the scream was higher and sharper than ever before, echoing in the air. She covered her ears in distress, then lowered her hands to cover the lower half of her face. She exchanged a glance with Gu Ze before turning to run back.
As she ran back, Gu Ze playfully leaned closer.
"Don't cover your nose; you need to breathe."
"Hiss."
In response to Gu Ze, Xu Nuan shot him a fierce glare and kicked him with one foot.
When they arrived at their brief resting spot, Xu Nuan saw Deng Yinyin holding a mirror up to her face, screaming continuously, while Xie Huai and the recovered Xu Hang stood nearby, torn between wanting to comfort her and painfully covering their ears.
Why was Deng Yinyin screaming so terribly?
Xu Nuan felt a mix of emotions as she looked at Deng Yinyin's face covered in red spots, unsure of what to say.
It was truly disheartening that a woman who cared so much about her appearance had an allergic reaction while the rough men were completely fine.
In fact, Deng Yinyin's allergic symptoms were far more severe than Xu Nuan's; her forehead, between her brows, cheeks, and chin were all densely covered.
With a slight case of trypophobia, Xu Nuan found it hard to look directly at Deng Yinyin.
And with Deng Yinyin as a comparison, Xu Nuan calmly glared at Gu Ze, who was smiling at her.
At that moment, she certainly did not think Gu Ze was happy because she had acknowledged his identity as the so-called Pursuer; it was clear he was mocking her without restraint.
Perhaps noticing Xu Nuan's expression, the screaming Deng Yinyin suddenly threw down the mirror and burst into tears.
Xu Nuan noticed that as Deng Yinyin cried, she kept sneaking glances at Gu Ze.
She realized something: Deng Yinyin liked Gu Ze. Just moments ago, Gu Ze had declared himself her Pursuer, and just a few days prior, he had confessed to her.
Such complicated relationships within one team made Xu Nuan, who disliked dealing with complex matters, feel a headache coming on.
No matter how comforting Xu Hang and Xie Huai tried to be, Deng Yinyin, believing she had ruined her looks, could hear nothing.
In truth, Xu Nuan also cared about the state of her face. But upon reflection, all they had done together was fetch water by the lake; there must have been some infectious bugs or germs by the riverbank.
"From now on, we need to disinfect after going to the river, and we should disinfect again when we come back."
Xu Nuan had to remind Deng Yinyin of what they might have encountered, disturbed by her cries.
To her surprise, Deng Yinyin cried even harder upon hearing this.
Xu Nuan shrugged helplessly at Xu Hang, who was looking to her for help. After all, most women cared about their appearance, and they often did so without any principles.
During the time that Deng Yinyin was sobbing, Xu Hang, who had recovered, announced that they could set off again. Reluctantly, Deng Yinyin wrapped a handkerchief around her face and moved closer to Xu Nuan as they walked, asking softly, "Xu Nuan, what do you think we might have been infected with? Is drinking the Antidote effective? I'm afraid it might have adverse effects."
Her reaction mirrored Xu Nuan's own feelings. Xu Nuan intended to analyze the situation seriously for Deng Yinyin but soon realized that while Deng Yinyin was talking to her, she was secretly glancing at Gu Ze, who walked on her right side.
Suddenly, Xu Nuan understood why Deng Yinyin was crying so sorrowfully; it must be unbearable to let the person she liked see her in such an unflattering state.
Forcing herself to ignore the discomfort in her heart, Xu Nuan maintained a calm expression.
"It's better not to drink anything recklessly. However, this Supply Station should have the appropriate medication; we just need to endure for a few more days."
"A few more days?"
Deng Yinyin's voice rose suddenly. When she noticed Gu Ze's gaze sweeping over, she instinctively pulled up her handkerchief again. Her eyes reddened once more. Realizing that Gu Ze still had no intention of comforting her, she took a few steps forward to catch up with Xu Hang and Xie Huai.
That silhouette looked incredibly sad and lonely.
Xu Nuan felt a sudden discomfort. The feelings of youth seemed distant yet were actually very close; her chest felt tight, her nose tinged with bitterness. Her gaze kept wanting to drift toward someone while she struggled to restrain herself. With every step closer, her heart raced and her cheeks flushed. If she were to speak up, she would likely stutter.
"Ha."
She exhaled quietly, then adjusted her mood and turned to look at Gu Ze, half teasing and half mocking.
"The male god in the legend, it seems you've hurt a certain beauty's heart."
Gu Ze raised an eyebrow, smiling lightly.
"Whose heart is hurt? I'm more than willing to heal your wounds."
Then he moved in closer.
The rest of his sentence was left unspoken, fearing that someone might get angry and explode.
Xu Nuan shot Gu Ze a glare and continued walking, feeling once again certain that Gu Ze was the kind of person who could break someone's heart if he wanted to ignore them. The gentlemanly facade was merely a mask this man wore.
They walked from dawn until noon, and then from noon until around three or four in the afternoon. Their water supply was running low, and under the scorching sun, the group had lost their appetite for food and continued to walk in a daze.
The surroundings were too barren, with too many stone peaks and Gobi terrain. If there were a Special Tree nearby, they would have spotted it by now. They also had a telescope, which helped when searching the area.
In the end, Xu Nuan concluded that even if they walked tirelessly for several days like this, they still wouldn't find the Special Tree.
The Special Tree had yet to appear. This was Xu Nuan's intuition as a woman. After climbing to a high place to search with the telescope, she firmly held onto this conclusion and casually mentioned it to Gu Ze.
"I have some recollection of this level."
Gu Ze stroked his chin thoughtfully, then slowly responded under Xu Nuan's disdainful gaze.
"If I remember correctly, we need to trigger some mechanism to reveal the Special Tree."
Xu Nuan began to grind her teeth. "Why didn't you mention something so important earlier? Not using a cheat is just wasting resources."
Gu Ze raised his hands innocently.
"One Hundred Levels, and each Survival Game has multiple mechanisms. How am I supposed to remember all that?"
"Weren't you the one who claimed to have an eidetic memory?"
Xu Nuan started digging up old grievances, showing no mercy towards Gu Ze.
At this moment, with no outsiders around, Gu Ze didn't feel embarrassed at all; he even smiled shamelessly.
"I was too busy worrying about your issues to focus on clearing levels."
Xu Nuan expressed great skepticism about this. Who was it that suddenly activated cheats with a cold face during Cliff's level?
Just as Xu Nuan was contemplating whether to retort again, she heard Xu Hang's exclamation from ahead.
"Ze, you two come over quickly! We've discovered a Hidden Level!"
Meeting Gu Ze's somewhat triumphant gaze, Xu Nuan turned her head away in silence and ran forward, thinking about this man favored by the game.
