“Gunshot Wound?”
Xu Nuan slightly reined in her burning gaze and followed Gu Ze's line of sight to look at the wound on her right hand. To her, it was merely a scrape; more than the injury itself, she was concerned about the man who was disinfecting it for her.
That long-missed profile occupied all her thoughts, leaving no room for anything else.
“That person silenced the gun and used the night as cover. How despicable!”
Gu Ze was cleaning around the wound, and whenever he accidentally touched a bloodstain, it would cause Xu Nuan to shudder, involuntarily drawing in her breath. Their long-awaited reunion had turned into a scene of Xu Nuan being injured, which made him somewhat irritable.
Irritable as he was, his hands remained gentle, as if he were polishing a precious treasure. In the next moment, unable to contain herself any longer, Xu Nuan placed her hand on Gu Ze's head. His hair was somewhat disheveled, and being in a desert environment meant it inevitably harbored a lot of sand. In the faint moonlight, she could see those dirty grains.
Xu Nuan didn’t mind the dirt; instead, she found it endearing.
Only with this person by her side could she truly feel at ease. If seeing him came at the cost of being shot, she felt it was worth it. She should be grateful to the guiding Zombie. Without it, she might still be trapped in that previous town, worrying about He Min and Deng Yinyin. At that moment, she had no time to analyze the peculiarities of that Zombie, nor did she care about the few people trapped in another mechanism.
“It’s so nice.”
Xu Nuan murmured softly.
“It’s so nice that you’re here.”
She couldn’t help but smile, like a girl who had just received the greatest happiness in the world. At least for that fleeting moment, there was no shadow in her eyes, and her mind was free from any sinister plots. She was simply a girl joyfully reunited with the man she loved, displaying her most genuine smile.
“If only we could find a doctor to stitch you up; handling it this way is too careless.”
While Gu Ze continued tending to the wound, he didn’t hear Xu Nuan’s murmur. But when he looked up, he saw a gaze from Xu Nuan filled with an unprecedented affection—one he had always longed for and the motivation behind all his elaborate plans to reach this point.
“I’m sorry for leaving you alone again.”
Gu Ze felt incredibly fortunate to have Xu Nuan standing before him. Every time they parted, Xu Nuan seemed to change in some way. The woman he loved had taken on too many responsibilities that did not belong to her, leaving her perpetually in a state of crisis.
His greatest concern was Xu Nuan's physical condition. Remembering this, Gu Ze hurriedly checked other parts of her body, his usually cool voice now carrying a hint of warmth.
"Have you felt anything strange lately?"
Gu Ze quickly pulled out a vial from his pocket. Just as he was about to reach for a syringe, he hesitated, recalling the side effects of the medication. That person was still lurking nearby; this was not an entirely safe place. He couldn't guarantee that he could evade that person's attack while carrying an unconscious Xu Nuan. Yet, three days would soon pass, and if he didn't administer the medication, Xu Nuan's condition would deteriorate significantly.
Xu Nuan was completely unconcerned about the medication in Gu Ze's hand. Being with him and the things they shared were far more important than any secrets regarding the drugs. She wouldn't question anything at this moment; instead, she answered truthfully.
"There were a few times when I felt..." Xu Nuan frowned, trying to find the right words to describe her condition. "I couldn't quite control my body, and there were moments that felt like withdrawal. But in the end, it was nothing serious."
In truth, recalling the madness of that craving now frightened Xu Nuan a little. However, as her gaze fell upon Gu Ze, who was looking down at the vial, her expression softened, and she forgot her fear.
Her explanation did not elicit an immediate response from Gu Ze.
He kept his head down as moonlight danced across his hair and lightly brushed against his clothes, casting soft shadows on the ground. From Xu Nuan's perspective, she could see the tips of his slightly longer hair brushing against his face, with his prominent nose casting a gentle shadow on his features. Below that were his thin lips, their contours clearly defined, and beneath them lay a chin adorned with a hint of stubble. Compelled by an impulse, Xu Nuan reached out to touch his chin; the stubble tickled her fingertips just as it stirred something within her heart.
Gu Ze lifted her hand and placed it against his face while gazing deeply into her eyes. His gaze held emotions that made Xu Nuan's heart race—his eyes sparkled like cold stars. Knowing Gu Ze well, she recognized the seriousness in him at this moment; she could always see sides of him that others could not. She understood that this openness was a reflection of Gu Ze's heart laid bare before her.
"Warm."
Gu Ze uttered a simple word that always carried an enchanting power when it came from him. Aware that this was not the right moment for romance, Xu Nuan found herself unable to suppress her feelings and instinctively stepped closer, pressing her face against his to feel his breath.
"I'm here."
He was there; she felt at ease. She was there; she hoped he could relax a little more.
"I hope you won't ask me for the reason regarding this matter for now."
Gu Ze started off, using one hand to tuck Xu Nuan's hair, which had fallen due to her long run, behind her ear.
"This medicine should be taken every three days if possible, and only in a completely safe environment."
Gu Ze pulled out the medicine bottles from his pocket, first stuffing one into Xu Nuan's hand and then filling her backpack with the rest.
"Don't ask anything. Trust me, I won't hurt you. I will explain everything to you later."
Xu Nuan had her face pressed against Gu Ze's chest, so she couldn't see her expression at that moment. He felt a bit nervous inside, his breathing slightly quickening.
One of the conflicts between Gu Ze and Xu Nuan was suspicion. Due to past experiences, Xu Nuan found it hard to trust others easily, and to some extent, he was no exception. He understood this and felt a pang of sympathy for her. Yet occasionally, he felt a bit disappointed. As a man who wanted to create a beautiful future for the two of them, he wouldn’t show such emotions. However, it seemed he rarely appeared brave in front of Xu Nuan. He had to admit that he was somewhat unsuccessful in pursuing her.
Gu Ze revealed a bitter smile from an angle where Xu Nuan couldn't see him, his attention still on her while his peripheral vision caught sight of something outside the alley.
"Understood."
Xu Nuan's voice was very soft, so soft that it was hard to discern her tone. Gu Ze couldn't help but deepen his bitter smile as he watched Xu Nuan directly open the medicine bottle and look up at him.
"Is this considered a safe time?"
Even though the moonlight was cool and thin, Xu Nuan's eyes were filled with only Gu Ze.
In those light-colored pupils, there was no reflection of anyone else.
The momentary daze in Gu Ze's eyes brought a fleeting smile to those light-colored irises.
A warm current flowed through Gu Ze's heart as he couldn't help but hold Xu Nuan tightly, his voice filled with overflowing love.
"Not yet, just hold on a little longer."
The night was thick, and the stars were few. There were no lights along the streets, and to keep Well-Meaning Person from knowing where they were, Xu Nuan and Gu Ze couldn't even turn on their flashlights.
The two of them hid in a dilapidated house, watching each other through the light that filtered in from a broken window.
Though their feelings ran deep, danger lurked everywhere. Apart from gazing deeply into each other's faces to alleviate the longing they had felt for so long, there was nothing else they could do.
Finally coming back to her senses after the overwhelming surprise, Xu Nuan glanced at her bandaged right arm and asked the crucial question.
"Who was ambushing you?"
As Rationality gradually returned to Xu Nuan, she pieced together what had happened. Someone must have been lying in wait for Gu Ze, and he had realized it. They had been locked in a struggle in the darkness, while she had inadvertently disrupted that balance by arriving due to a Zombie's guidance.
It seemed that both Gu Ze and the person hiding in the shadows had mistaken her for the other, thinking that the sounds of footsteps had revealed their positions when they actually intended to take advantage of the situation.
However, when she saw Gu Ze and couldn't help but call out to him, it gave the person in the shadows an opportunity. At that moment, Xu Nuan felt grateful that Gu Ze had reacted quickly; otherwise, that bullet might not have hit her right arm but could have struck her heart—or perhaps Gu Ze himself.
Realizing this made Xu Nuan feel a wave of fear; their flesh and blood bodies were no match for firearms.
"He doesn't really want to get rid of me."
Gu Ze's expression was complex as he noticed Xu Nuan trembling slightly. He pulled her into his embrace and gently patted her back in an attempt to comfort her.
"The person he wants to kill is you. Therefore, I need to tell you everything I know about him. You must be cautious of this person."
Xu Nuan felt a momentary contraction, her body trembling again before quickly calming down under Gu Ze's soothing presence.
She knew that her days in the game wouldn't remain peaceful for long. She was aware that there were three groups of people targeting her from the very beginning, whether it was Zhang Xiao, who wanted to uncover the secret passage, or Dong Keyong, who sought the items left by Su Zihang. Then there were those few who consistently put her in peril; they were the demons she faced in this game.
"Is it only Zhang Xiao's group that has guns?"
No matter how wealthy, powerful, or influential someone was, it was difficult to gain privileges in this game, and firearms represented those privileges. It was no wonder she suspected a connection between Zhang Xiao and Another Founder, which made her wary of Zhang Xiao and eager to eliminate him.
Xu Nuan's mood suddenly turned heavy, while Gu Ze had not felt at ease since learning about this situation.
"That person is called He Jun," Xu Nuan said, lowering her head and missing the flash of murderous intent and ruthlessness in Gu Ze's eyes. "The gun he has is Ning Han's."
This served as a roundabout way to reassure Xu Nuan that there weren't many more people for her to fear in this game.
"I encountered him in this town. There was a mechanism that required communication with the System, and he inadvertently revealed his identity, giving me an opportunity."
At that moment, Gu Ze's expression was anything but relaxed.
"He has no ties to Zhang Xiao and his group; he came solely for you, and it was he who killed Chi Ming."
