The air was a mix of heat and humidity, and Xu Nuan's back and palms were drenched in sweat. Her hand was clasped tightly in Gu Ze's dry one, causing his hand to become damp as well.
Her heart raced, as if it would leap out of her chest at any moment. Breathing became rapid and irregular due to her deliberate attempts to suppress her anxiety. Gu Ze's grip on her hand tightened slightly, just enough to reassure her that he wanted her to calm down.
She wished she could steady herself, but her body refused to cooperate. There were too few places to hide along this path; they had already lost the initiative. Continuing to run down this road would only make them easy targets for He Jun. Their only chance of survival was to find a place to conceal themselves and hope that He Jun would miss them.
However, the strategies they could think of were likely the same ones He Jun would consider. The person wielding powerful weapons would undoubtedly conduct a thorough search.
What frightened Xu Nuan was not just the lack of a hidden refuge, but also the fact that He Jun had a gun. Moreover, from the brief glance she had caught earlier, she sensed a true killer's aura emanating from him. In a previous Survival Game, although Gu Ze had confronted He Jun, she had only noticed Gu Ze and completely overlooked He Jun. It was the same this time; He Jun was skilled at concealing himself, allowing him to track them without being detected and ambush them in advance. If she hadn't happened to glance over just then, she might not have known who shot her until it was too late.
Believing that the disparity in strength between them was overwhelming, Xu Nuan failed to consider that if He Jun truly held such an advantage, he could have simply shot them from the shadows while tracking them earlier. After all, ordinary people like them, without special training, couldn't instinctively dodge bullets.
Xu Nuan felt extremely tense but dared not make a sound; she feared that even the slightest noise would attract He Jun's attention.
Before them lay a bush that barely concealed their presence; they could only be seen from about a meter away. Surrounding them were shorter herbaceous plants that offered no real cover. Although there were tall trees nearby, they were too sparse and too close to the cliff to be considered safe.
Xu Nuan's heartbeat quickened further as she prayed that He Jun wouldn't discover them, yet she felt it would be an easy task for someone like him. They couldn't rely on footsteps to gauge his approach; he had become powerful enough for that.
He Jun was the most formidable opponent they had encountered so far and also the best at hiding. Xu Nuan had never imagined that she and Gu Ze would find themselves at such a disadvantage. She believed she was dragging Gu Ze down with her; this thought intensified her anxiety and worry, causing beads of sweat to trickle down her cheeks and splatter onto the leaves below. She could almost hear the sound of their collision.
Unable to resist, Xu Nuan glanced at Gu Ze, wanting to convey her thoughts through her eyes, fully aware that he would not agree with her.
From her perspective, Gu Ze's expression was serious; his sharp gaze and tightly pressed lips showed no signs of the tension and worry she felt.
Was there a way to deal with He Jun?
Xu Nuan instinctively thought this but quickly concluded it was impossible. No matter how skilled Gu Ze was, he couldn't match up against a gun, especially when He Jun appeared to be an exceptionally trained fighter. The combination of He Jun's skills and weaponry made him nearly invincible.
She reached out with her other hand to cling to Gu Ze's shoulder, just as she was about to catch his attention. However, Gu Ze quickly pulled her hand away and pressed her head down.
Xu Nuan's heart raced even faster. She complied, but the sight of the damp ground beneath her, with no other scenery in view, left her feeling helpless.
Sweat dripped from her chin onto the ground, and she noticed that the hand resting on her neck felt very hot. She tried to grip Gu Ze's hand tighter, but the overwhelming sense of powerlessness almost made her let go.
The short height brought immense pressure that her mind struggled to bear. As dizziness washed over her, she nearly cried out in panic; fainting now would only trouble Gu Ze, which was the last thing she wanted.
She moved her lips, wanting to say something, but in the end, not a single word came out.
Though not much time had passed, it felt to Xu Nuan like she had endured a long century. Her mind grew increasingly tense and uncooperative. She even dug her free hand into the ground, using the cool earth beneath her to stay awake. Gu Ze beside her was fully focused on sensing their surroundings and did not notice this subtle movement.
Just as Xu Nuan swallowed hard due to her anxiety, Gu Ze suddenly yanked her up and pulled her in another direction. In their haste, they neglected the trees on either side and inevitably got scratched.
“Ze?”
Xu Nuan hadn’t fully processed what was happening; she stared blankly at Gu Ze when suddenly she heard hurried footsteps behind them. Turning around sharply, she realized that He Jun had somehow circled behind them and was now chasing them with all his might, his gun swaying with his movements. Although she didn’t understand why He Jun hadn’t shot at them yet, Xu Nuan still couldn’t detach herself from the perilous situation.
If it hadn’t been for Gu Ze’s quick reaction just now, they would have been silently taken out. While acknowledging He Jun’s strength, she also became acutely aware of Gu Ze’s unfathomable depth.
The intense running left Xu Nuan’s already weak body struggling to keep up. As she stumbled slightly, she nearly fell.
No matter how much she wished otherwise, she still dragged Gu Ze down with her.
Xu Nuan felt even more guilty; she even mustered the courage to suggest that Gu Ze abandon her. But instead, he pushed her into a nearby bush, beyond which lay a cliff.
“Just don’t expose yourself completely in his line of sight!”
Gu Ze could only leave behind this one sentence. He quickly rushed towards He Jun, and before He Jun could raise his hand, Gu Ze delivered a flying kick that sent He Jun sprawling.
Xu Nuan's heart raced as she stumbled into the bushes, falling to the ground. Once she sat down, it became difficult for her to stand up again, and her fading consciousness prevented her from clearly seeing Gu Ze's movements.
Gu Ze moved swiftly. After kicking He Jun away, he lunged forward, ready to deliver another kick. He Jun's strength was indeed formidable, just as Xu Nuan had analyzed. For some unknown reason, He Jun did not attack Gu Ze with his gun but instead engaged him in hand-to-hand combat.
The fight between Gu Ze and He Jun was brutal, with each strike drawing blood. After a flurry of punches and kicks, both men drew short knives. Gu Ze's cheek was grazed several times due to his evasive maneuvers, while He Jun's shirt was slashed open at the chest.
It seemed like they had been fighting for a long time, but when Xu Nuan regained her senses and struggled to rise, He Jun and Gu Ze had already begun targeting each other's vital points with their knives.
As Xu Nuan shakily stood up, she noticed that He Jun was actually at a slight disadvantage—provided he wasn't using his gun.
When Xu Nuan appeared in He Jun's line of sight, he disregarded the knife that Gu Ze thrust at him and, blinded by rage, pulled out his gun to shoot Xu Nuan.
Xu Nuan's reflexes were slower than usual; she clumsily dodged to the side. However, He Jun failed to shoot successfully. Just as he assumed his shooting stance, Gu Ze charged at him recklessly and tackled him from behind in an attempt to throw him off balance. The suddenness of the move caused Gu Ze to lose his footing, giving He Jun the opportunity to execute a shoulder throw on him.
Gu Ze crashed heavily to the ground. Before he could even lift his foot to kick out, He Jun lunged at him with the short knife.
Just as Xu Nuan regained her balance, she witnessed He Jun stab Gu Ze. The sight of Gu Ze's pained and contorted face brought tears to her eyes. A surge of strength suddenly welled up within her; she cast aside all fatigue from the drugs and quickly grabbed a short knife, stabbing it into He Jun from behind. In pain, He Jun had no choice but to release his grip on Gu Ze and use one hand to restrain Xu Nuan while reaching for his gun with the other.
Seeing this, Gu Ze, still lying on the ground, struggled to pull the knife from his abdomen but managed to charge at He Jun and stab him fiercely.
"Nuan, jump down!"
While trying to control He Jun with all his might, Gu Ze shouted at Xu Nuan.
At that moment, Xu Nuan finally found it easier to breathe. Upon hearing Gu Ze's words, she instinctively shook her head and even pushed the knife deeper into He Jun’s wound while twisting it slightly.
He Jun was already covered in blood. Perhaps provoked by the two, his gaze turned even more ferocious than before as he made a move to grab the gun.
Seeing this, Gu Ze had no choice but to release his grip and go for the gun. However, injured He Jun was quicker than the equally wounded Gu Ze, swiftly pulling out the gun and aiming it at Xu Nuan, who was trying to attack him again.
“Nuan, get away!”
Gu Ze abandoned his hold on He Jun and lunged towards Xu Nuan, wrapping his arms around her as they rolled together.
But He Jun did not fire. As Xu Nuan attempted to push Gu Ze away, she caught sight of a reminiscent smile at the corner of He Jun's lips.
“Ze, Xin!”
Xu Nuan urgently pushed the injured Gu Ze aside and drew the knife hidden in her leg, charging towards He Jun. In her eyes, He Jun's gun seemed heavier than theirs combined, and she feared he might not have the strength to shoot.
Yet as she rushed forward, her body stumbled again, a momentary lapse of consciousness that felt nearly fatal.
She didn’t reach He Jun; instead, she was shoved aside by Gu Ze as he rushed to confront He Jun. In that instant of falling down the cliff, she saw Gu Ze pick up her knife and stab it towards He Jun. In a fit of rage, He Jun finally fired at him. The last scene she witnessed was Gu Ze plummeting from the other side of the cliff.
“Gu Ze!”
