After a busy afternoon, the people in the shelter finally settled down. The casualties received treatment, supplies had been distributed, and the temporary calm allowed everyone to catch their breath. Li Ming and Chen Yao finally had a moment to rest.
Li Ming sat in a corner, leaning against the wall, taking a deep breath as his weary body began to relax slightly. He turned to look at Chen Yao not far away; she stood drinking water, her face still showing signs of fatigue, but her eyes were filled with determination.
"Chen Yao, thank you for your help today," Li Ming tried to break the awkward silence between them, his tone filled with gratitude.
Chen Yao glanced at him and nodded slightly but did not say much more. Her demeanor remained distant, leaving Li Ming feeling somewhat helpless and awkward.
"Actually, I've always admired your medical skills," Li Ming added, trying to keep the conversation going.
Chen Yao set down her water bottle and replied softly, "I just did my best; it's what I should do."
Li Ming nodded, understanding that Chen Yao was not good at expressing herself, but he still appreciated her efforts. The awkward atmosphere lingered between them, making Li Ming feel a bit out of place.
"You must be tired too. Why don't you take a break?" Li Ming attempted to change the subject to lighten the mood.
"I'm fine," Chen Yao replied briefly, though there was a hint of softness in her tone.
After a moment of silence, Li Ming quietly asked, "Chen Yao, what do you think about our current situation?"
Chen Yao pondered for a moment before saying, "Our situation is very dangerous. The demon forces are becoming increasingly aggressive, and our reinforcements have yet to arrive. This worries me."
Li Ming nodded. "Yes, Master Han is also very concerned. We need to strengthen our defenses while finding a way to contact reinforcements from other cities."
Chen Yao frowned slightly. "I'm worried not just about the demon attacks but also about their motives. Why are they so intent on attacking us? There must be some conspiracy behind this that we don't know about."
Li Ming took a deep breath, filled with concern. "I feel the same way. We must be cautious and not let our guard down."
They fell silent for a moment, both lost in thought. Although the awkwardness between them remained, at that moment, they understood each other's worries and determination.
"Li Ming, you performed very well today," Chen Yao suddenly said, a hint of approval in her tone.
Li Ming looked at Chen Yao in surprise and then smiled slightly. "Thank you, Chen Yao. Your help means a lot to me."
"You're welcome," Chen Yao replied calmly, then turned to leave, continuing her busy work.
As Li Ming watched Chen Yao's back, he felt a warmth in his heart. He knew that although Chen Yao remained distant towards him, her inner self was not as cold and unfeeling as it seemed. Her strength and determination filled him with immense admiration.
The night in Southern Capital had temporarily returned to calm, but the atmosphere inside the shelter remained tense and heavy. As Li Ming and Chen Yao were called to attend an emergency meeting, they walked through a bustling area. Outside the tents, soldiers were nervously repairing their firearms and counting battle losses. Flickering flames illuminated the scene, and thick smoke filled the air; every face was etched with exhaustion and resolve.
A small group of cultivators dressed in robes were passionately discussing nearby, their expressions serious, clearly worried about the current situation. Li Ming looked at these cultivators with a mix of curiosity and respect.
"These cultivators seem to be individuals who have awakened special abilities," Li Ming whispered to Chen Yao, a glimmer of curiosity in his eyes.
"Yes, their presence is crucial for us," Chen Yao nodded before stepping into the tent.
Inside the tent, Master Han stood beside a makeshift table covered with a map. Several senior commanders and cultivators surrounded it, their expressions tense. Master Han nodded at Li Ming and Chen Yao as they entered, signaling them to join.
"Everyone, our situation is extremely urgent," Master Han stated bluntly, his voice filled with anxiety and determination. "According to the latest reconnaissance report, the demon army is rapidly gathering; they are likely to launch a new offensive by dawn tomorrow."
Li Ming furrowed his brow, filled with concern. "Master Han, can our defenses hold?"
Master Han took a deep breath, his expression grave. "Our defenses are already very weak; if we cannot reinforce them in time, we may not withstand this attack."
Li Ming's heart was filled with confusion and disbelief. "Master Han, why can the demon army continue to attack without end? How can they gather forces so quickly?"
Master Han frowned in thought for a moment before replying, "I strongly suspect that this is due to the Black Dragon Gang's long-standing presence in Southern Capital. They have established several Teleportation Arrays in many locations. These arrays allow the demon army to execute lightning-fast strikes and quickly gather forces for ambushes."
Chen Yao appeared quite shocked. "The sudden attack by the Black Dragon Gang must not be a coincidence; there must be some kind of conspiracy between them and the demon clan."
A chill ran through Li Ming's heart as he realized how crucial this information was. "We must destroy these Teleportation Arrays; otherwise, we won't be able to withstand their offensive."
Master Han nodded. "That's right, but we need to first determine the exact locations of these formations. This requires the efforts of our reconnaissance teams."
Inside the tent, Li Ming, Chen Yao, and other commanders were gathered around a map, anxiously discussing their defense plans. Suddenly, the radio on the table emitted a series of static noises, the harsh sound interrupting everyone's thoughts.
"What’s going on?" The military commander of Southern Capital, Chen Xiang, furrowed his brows and shouted loudly. Chen Xiang was an elderly man in his fifties or sixties, robust in stature with gray hair yet brimming with youthful energy, looking as if he could charge into battle at any moment. His voice was filled with urgency and anger. "What’s wrong with the radio? Our information is already scarce… we can’t have even the radio malfunctioning!"
Several soldiers quickly gathered around, urgently adjusting the radio's frequency and antenna, but the static persisted. The voice coming from the radio was intermittent and barely functional.
"Fix it quickly; we can't afford to lose this only means of communication!" Commander Chen Xiang scolded angrily, a flicker of unease crossing his eyes.
"Yes, sir! We’re working on it!" one soldier replied, moving even faster, but still achieving no results.
Li Ming watched this scene unfold with growing anxiety. He knew that in this battle, every piece of information was vital; losing communication would put them at an even greater disadvantage.
"This static seems to be intentional interference," Chen Yao said quietly, her brow furrowed. "It might be some kind of jamming device from the enemy."
Upon hearing this, Chen Xiang's expression darkened further. "Damn demons! They must be trying to cut off our communication so we can't coordinate with each other!"
