Everyone reacted immediately, rushing towards the stairs. Chen Rui remained at the stairway, alert after hearing the noise, but he didn't make any moves, merely staring wide-eyed as he waited for the others.
Yu Shiming and Liu Xiwen were the first to reach the stairs, but they were stopped by Chen Rui, who gestured for them not to descend just yet.
"Why? Are we just going to wait here to die?" Yu Shiming asked, puzzled.
"Do you think if it were some giant beast that had found us, it would make this kind of noise?" Chen Rui's response was off-topic but revealed the crux of the issue.
Yu Shiming understood: if it were a giant beast, it would likely have demolished the entire building without giving them a chance to react. Moreover, such a massive creature would create tremendous vibrations when moving, making it nearly impossible for it to approach silently. So far, they hadn't encountered any such monsters; thus, the sound might not have been caused by a creature breaking through glass. Even if there were a monster, it might not be without its fighting chance.
After a while, everyone gathered at the stairway. They didn't go downstairs but hid in the stairwell. "Well, I'll go take a look. If I don't come back, don't go wandering around. Of course, if any monsters come in, you should hurry to the underground parking lot and drive away."
With that, Chen Rui stepped out of the stairway. Behind him, Xu Tao said, "Five minutes. If we don't see anything by then, we'll head to the underground parking lot."
"Hey~ take this." Zhang Shi handed Chen Rui the fire axe that had been stored in the fire cabinet.
Chen Rui accepted the axe and gave Zhang Shi a faint smile before walking out of the stairway with an air of nonchalance.
"He's definitely gay!!!"
"Seriously! It's utterly mind-blowing!!!"
Chen Rui re-entered the mall. Unlike in movies where special forces move quickly to hide behind shelves and observe their surroundings, Chen Rui moved casually like an ordinary customer, weaving through various aisles—though one couldn't overlook the axe in his hand.
This wasn't due to his bravery; rather, he felt no fear because among this group of people, he knew this was all a dream—a 'dream.'
The sound grew closer and closer. Chen Rui's brow furrowed more deeply—not from tension or fear—but because he simply couldn't accept the aesthetic sense of those behind this script. They always created various bizarre-looking bosses that they thought were impressive.
A black squid appeared before Chen Rui. It was similar to a squid but not quite; it floated above the ground about two meters high. Its body was covered in various scales and muscles. What resembled legs—or perhaps appendages—hung down towards the ground in strands that seemed disconnected from its movement.
Suddenly, a voice came from behind Chen Rui. "Hey boss, what's the point of what you're doing? This is supposed to be a challenge for players. You shouldn't interfere; otherwise, it won't be fun."
Chen Rui regarded the Squid as inconsequential and turned to face Peng Hao. "Now that I'm here, what are we going to do? It's not my style to just kick the bucket like this."
"This is easy to handle!" Peng Hao snapped his fingers, and in an instant, the Squid exploded in mid-air, blue blood spraying everywhere, even splattering onto Chen Rui. "According to the storyline, after a player tricks it into dying, there shouldn't be any consequences. However, players definitely wouldn't let its blood get everywhere. This is actually a trap; these creatures have a toxic obsession with the blood of their kind, which means..."
"Which means you're trying to set me up again!" Chen Rui swung the Fire Axe at Peng Hao. "Get lost! And stop calling customers players; not everyone is here for fun."
The Fire Axe sliced through the air and passed right through Peng Hao's body. He grinned mischievously. "Look at the window."
Chen Rui turned to glance at the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the mall. Even though it was still dim outside, he could clearly see a dark mass approaching, like a swarm of moths drawn to the only light nearby.
When he looked back at Peng Hao, there was no trace of him left. Chen Rui hurriedly picked up the Fire Axe and dashed toward the stairwell with the urgency of a student rushing to school.
The anxious crowd in the stairwell finally heard a voice. Although they recognized it as human, it was not what they had hoped for. The sound of polished shoes rapidly striking the ground accompanied the words every movie hero would say: "You all need to run!"
"You all need to run! Go to the parking lot, hurry! It’ll be too late soon!" Chen Rui shouted desperately. His tone carried a hint of heroic bravado, but his current appearance had nothing to do with those two words.
He charged straight into the stairwell, not looking back as he raced down. "Stop dawdling! If you keep standing around, you'll die here."
Watching Chen Rui's figure disappear into the distance, Liu Xiwen was the first to react, but instead of rushing downstairs immediately, he yelled, "Don't use a coward's actions with a hero's line! Idiot!"
"Stop complaining and hurry up," Yu Shiming said as he grabbed Liu Xiwen's wrist and strode down the stairs.
Guo Luxing crouched down and picked up Lin Yan, smiling at her. "Let's go too."
"This guy," Xu Tao said with frustration, unable to describe Chen Rui at that moment. "Let’s go; something might really be happening." Xu Yao patted his shoulder and hurried away. "He’s really hard to figure out." Xu Tao chuckled self-deprecatingly and followed the others.
In the parking lot, cars were still haphazardly parked everywhere, some with keys left in their ignitions and doors ajar. If it weren't for that group of monsters outside, this world wouldn't be so bad.
"What’s going on? Why are we in such a rush?" Zeng Zhi asked.
Without looking back, Chen Rui climbed into the driver's seat of a Mercedes. "A whole bunch of monsters are coming!"
"Don't think of it as some kind of game..."
This time, due to the rush, there was no time to organize things. It was basically a one-on-one match of cars. Xu Yao and Xu Tao were driving a Ford Mustang, while the other couples were surprisingly together. Zhang Shi was driving a Toyota alone, and then there was Chen Rui and Zeng Zhi in a Mercedes.
The convoy of four cars was led by Chen Rui, speeding down the road with a serious twelve-point deduction, but of course, no one was concerned about the points at this moment.
Before they even left the street, a dense mass of black shadows surrounded the shopping mall behind them. However, it seemed they had no intention of stopping and were heading straight for them.
Looking at the dense swarm of black monsters in the rearview mirror, Zeng Zhi swallowed hard. "Did you take out their leader or something? Otherwise, why would they react so strongly?"
"It's all Peng Hao's fault; it has nothing to do with me."
"Come on, you and Peng Hao are cut from the same cloth."
"That's unfair! Peng Hao is so fat; there's no way I could fit into the same pair of pants as him."
Zhang Shi frowned as he looked in the rearview mirror. "At this rate, something bad is going to happen..."
Under Chen Rui's leadership, the convoy headed towards the ring road. Before reaching the overpass junction, there was a Sinopec gas station. Chen Rui hurriedly stopped the car and kicked Zeng Zhi out. "You lead now; head towards the airport."
Chen Rui's sudden stop caused a four-car pile-up behind them. Fortunately, none of the vehicles sustained serious damage; only their bumpers were severely damaged—a small blessing amidst misfortune.
After Zeng Zhi got out of the car, Chen Rui hit the gas without even closing the passenger door. This left everyone behind momentarily stunned; no one expected Chen Rui to abandon them and take off alone.
Perhaps based on previous experiences, Chen Rui felt that this person was a bit different from those he had encountered before.
Once everyone snapped back to reality, they immediately took off as well. However, they were already very close to the Squid gang behind them. In fact, the Squid's speed wasn't faster than theirs, but they could move in a straight line through the air, which meant that despite everyone's frantic escape, they couldn't shake them off too far.
Zeng Zhi stumbled into Xu Tao's car, looking quite dazed.
Xu Tao couldn't help but feel angry. "Are you okay?"
"Don't worry, just drive," Zeng Zhi said, the glow at the corner of his eye flickering under the car's interior light.
"That bastard!" Xu Tao slammed his hands on the steering wheel and pressed down hard on the accelerator as the three cars continued toward the Overpass.
As the three vehicles entered the Overpass, a Mercedes sped down the bridge in the opposite direction, barreling through the convoy.
The convoy came to a sudden halt once again, but this time everyone hit the brakes almost simultaneously, avoiding a collision. Although they had escaped damage last time, luck might not hold out forever.
Not far ahead of Chen Rui loomed a dark mass of Squids. "Really," Chen Rui sighed, suddenly pressing down hard with his foot. "What an eyesore."
The Mercedes charged like a roaring lion, letting out a desperate wail as its engine gave out, signaling it would never run again.
The height of the Squid mass began to drop, their 'gurgling' sounds seemingly expressing their hunger. The Mercedes did not crash straight into the Squids; instead, it swerved sharply at the moment of contact and crashed directly into a gas station.
Chen Rui stood up and immediately spotted Peng Hao's 'melon seed' face. "What a waste of your impressive physique to have such a face," Chen Rui couldn't help but feel annoyed with him; after all, he had been quite frustrated in his dreams.
Looking at Peng Hao's face from another angle really did make it resemble a melon seed—no doubt about it!
"Get lost," Peng Hao laughed. "Do you know that in the settings, those kinds of monsters aren't afraid of flames? So..."
"I just died for nothing?"
"Of course not! To save your pride, that Support Team adjusted the data just for you, giving you an American hero's ending. Those monsters were wiped out."
"Who do you think you are?" Wang Conghui walked over from behind. "You're amazing! You should just go be a hero from now on."
"Come on, Boss Wang, how could that be? People like me are meant to survive until the end; this time was just an accident."
"Then every time will be an accident from now on~ You'll definitely become famous in the hearts of our compatriots." Wang Conghui said while cupping his fist in salute and nodding occasionally.
"Don't say that~"
Chen Rui ignored the two lively characters and walked to the Record Office located at the back of the Cabin.
"Where's Xiong Kai?"
"This way!" A guy in a tracksuit raised his right hand, holding a can of soda.
"What's the plot progression?"
"It's almost over, but I don't know whose script it is; it's just terrible..." Xiong Kai stared at the three Crystal Display Panels in front of him.
"Don't use any special vocabulary!!!"
"K!K! They're getting close to the airport. The plot should be that after they approach the airport, they encounter the aliens' Mothership parked there, and then they just happen to run into the military launching an assault. The military is actually just guiding the coordinates for the Missile, so no matter how close they get to the Mothership, they'll all end up dead."
"Missile?"
"Fusion Weapon."
"That's indeed..." Chen Rui was already too exhausted to comment further.
