After stepping out of the café, I called Shunzi. He had no objections, repeating his usual line: wherever I go, he goes. Then I called Lao Chang. Since we were going out to sea, I couldn't continue working as a Diver. When Lao Chang heard that both Shunzi and I were quitting, he thought it was because of the shark incident today.
He tried every way to persuade us to stay, even offering to raise our pay, but I couldn't just tell him I was switching jobs. I had to steer the conversation back to the shark issue. Seeing my firm attitude, Lao Chang finally gave up and we settled on a time to settle our wages before wrapping things up.
With everything decided, there was nothing more to think about. I went home to sleep, resting up for next month's trip at sea. Around eight in the evening, Jiao Ba called again, saying his boss wanted to meet me. The two of them were waiting for me at a bar on Nanhu Road.
I didn't really want to go; what was there to see? A big guy like me wasn't exactly looking for a beauty contest! But there was no choice; Jiao Ba insisted that I had to go because it was the boss's request. Damn it, the boss thinks he's so important. Today, for the sake of money, I decided not to hold it against him and quickly put on my jacket and headed downstairs. I hopped on my motorcycle and rushed toward Nanhu Road.
About half an hour later, I arrived at the bar on Nanhu Road! Jiao Ba was waiting for me at the entrance. When he saw me arrive, he hurried over and said, "You finally made it! We've been waiting for you."
After parking my motorcycle, I replied, "Damn it, I came as soon as you called! I haven't even had dinner yet."
"Don't worry! I'll treat you later. Let's go." I followed Jiao Ba into the bar. This was a place I'd frequented before; I really liked the atmosphere here—elegant and comfortable. Whenever I felt stressed, I'd come here for a few drinks.
Jiao Ba led me to a spot inside where a woman was sitting with her back facing us. Jiao Ba approached her with a big smile and said, "Hey Brother Yi, let me introduce you. This is our boss, Miss Ma. Miss Ma, this is my buddy, Jin Zhongyi."
Our boss? I was a bit confused by Jiao Ba's words; what did this have to do with him? Was he also going to participate in this ocean venture? This guy had never been out to sea before! It struck me as odd.
I smiled politely and nodded, saying, "Hello, Miss Ma."
As I spoke, I discreetly took a look at her. Although the lighting was dim, I could see clearly that she was both beautiful and had an air of wildness about her. Judging by her appearance, she looked to be around twenty-five or twenty-six years old at most.
She had a pair of light blue eyes, and she looked like a mixed-race beauty. Her features were striking, and with her long hair cascading over her shoulders, she was incredibly charming—perhaps even more so than Maria Ozawa. Ah, forgive me for being a bit wicked, but it was the truth.
She smiled and said, "No need to be so polite. My name is Ma Jiahui; you can just call me Jenny."
As I expected, the name Jenny sounded like it belonged to a foreigner. This girl was indeed intriguing; do all beautiful women have such lovely names?
After I sat down with Jiao Ba, she ordered a bottle of beer for each of us. I felt she was being a bit stingy; as a boss, shouldn't she at least treat us to some Remy Martin? But while I thought that, I certainly couldn't say it out loud.
She looked me up and down and asked, "Jin Zhongyi, right? Heh heh, I heard... you used to be in the Marine Corps?"
From her tone, I sensed a hint of disdain. Although it wasn't strong, I could still pick up on it. I maintained my composure and replied, "Yes, I served in the Marine Corps for a few years before coming here."
She nodded naturally, still smiling as she said, "I really wouldn't have guessed! You don't look like someone who came from special forces."
Hey now, what are you implying? Just because I'm not built like Rambo or Schwarzenegger? Sure, I admit I'm under six feet tall and not particularly muscular; at first glance, I look as ordinary as they come. But even if I seem plain, you shouldn't say that! It's quite hurtful to my pride.
I kept my cool and said, "Well... that doesn't seem to have much to do with appearance."
"Exactly, Miss Ma—oh no, Jenny! Don't be fooled by his slender frame; if it comes down to it, four or five people wouldn't stand a chance against him," Jiao Bayi quickly interjected when he sensed the atmosphere was getting tense.
Jenny smirked slightly and took a sip of her beer. "Is he really that impressive? Excuse me for a moment; I need to use the restroom."
After she got up and left, I turned to Jiao Ba and said, "Damn it! Where did you meet this girl? She's quite arrogant! It seems she's not looking for sailors but rather for a husband!" I was getting a bit annoyed; it was the first time in my life that a woman had looked down on me like this while asking questions. I'd never experienced anything like it before—mainly because I hadn't interacted much with women.
Jiao Ba hurriedly explained, "Oh come on, brother, she's just like that. She speaks her mind, but she has a good heart. Otherwise, how could she have given me the contract? Don't you think so?"
Hearing this only made me angrier. "Damn it, don't use that to reason with me. It sounds like you're saying I owe you something because of your connections. Don't pull that with me. If it comes down to it, I can just quit. It's just a bit more money, right? I won't be begging her for anything!"
Jiao Bayi saw that I was getting fired up and quickly put on a smile, saying, "Brother Yi, listen to me. She's a young lady, spoiled by her family. You're a grown man; why are you being so petty? Are you really going to argue with a little girl? Isn't that embarrassing?"
I cursed under my breath at his words; they only made me feel more drained. I immediately changed the subject and asked, "Hey Lao Ba, do you think she looks like someone who can go out to sea and fish? I've been a sailor for years and have never seen such a young beauty out on the ocean. Can she really handle it?"
Jiao Ba shot me a glance and said, "Oh come on, weren't you just talking about her? What’s this? Now you think she's pretty? Feeling sorry for her?"
I glared at him. "Cut the crap; I'm being serious here! What's her background?"
I was genuinely curious. On deep-sea fishing boats, the crew is usually all men, and the youngest among them is around forty. This was the first time I'd encountered such a young beauty going out to sea. If her family really had that much money, why would she choose to endure this hardship? Going out to sea isn't child's play; it can last from a few months to several years, and there are real dangers involved.
Jiao Ba impatiently replied, "Why do you care about her background? As long as there's money to be made, that's all that matters. All I know is she's wealthy; a friend of mine introduced her to me at the Antique Market."
Just then, while we were talking, a waiter rushed over and said, "Hey guys, you should go check on your friend! It seems like she's in some trouble right by the restroom!"
Jiao Ba and I exchanged glances before I muttered a quick 'thank you' and hurried toward the restroom. Although this woman had an attitude, she was still a woman. If something happened to her, we couldn't just stand by and do nothing! After all, I was a soldier—at least I used to be one.
