The dark mass ahead was a swarm of Bloodsucker Worms, those demonic creatures moving as swiftly as cockroaches. When Jiao Ba and I saw them, we both panicked, slamming against the cabin walls even harder. Jiao Ba shouted, "Ah~~ I don't want to die! I don't want to die!"
I yelled back, "Damn it, if you don't want to die, hurry up and push harder!"
The Bearded Man was desperately swimming toward us, continuously shouting, "Help me! Help me!"
In moments of life and death, a sudden wave of compassion can arise. I wanted to help him, but I couldn't even save myself; how could I find time for him? As the Bloodsucker Worms drew closer and closer, Jiao Ba and I still couldn't break through the cabin. At one moment, I found myself ready to accept death. I gave up the futile struggle; it seemed that luck could not always be on my side. Since God had decided for me to die here, no matter what I did would be in vain.
Seeing me give up, Jiao Ba was stunned as well. He supported Shunzi and waited dumbly for death to arrive. We exchanged a glance and shared a helpless laugh; perhaps neither of us had expected this place to be the end of our lives.
But just at that critical moment, a loud crashing sound came from above the cabin, as if someone was smashing the Wreck. In less than ten seconds, a large hole was broken through the cabin ceiling, followed by the beam of a flashlight shining down.
A deep male voice called out, "Loyalty and Righteousness! Jiao Ba! Where are you?"
It was Mai Lao's voice—he had come to rescue us! The Old Man was indeed still alive. Jiao Ba and I felt a surge of hope: "Mai Lao! We're down here! Hurry, get us out!" My mind was filled with questions, but there was no time for that now; we needed to leave this cursed place first. Everything could wait until we were safe outside.
Then, Mai Lao's hand reached down from above. "Quickly! Loyalty and Righteousness! The Wreck is about to sink!"
I urged Jiao Ba to take Shunzi and go first while I covered their escape. The Bloodsucker Worms were already right in front of us; at this moment of life and death, every life mattered! Jiao Ba carried the unconscious Shunzi on his back and grasped Mai Lao's hand as he painfully crawled out of the cabin.
Just as I prepared to climb out myself, suddenly the Wreck lurched downward. Water surged over my head before I could grab Mai Lao's hand. I was submerged in the sea; thankfully, I had braced myself for sinking; otherwise, this would have surely drowned me.
The seawater had turned murky, and I could clearly feel the Wreck sinking rapidly. The cries of the female corpse had vanished, and the entire cabin was filled with water. It was too dark to see anything, but I knew for certain that Bloodsucker Worms were lurking around me.
As the Wreck continued to sink, I attempted to burst out of the cabin several times, but the force of the incoming water pushed me back each time. After about half a minute, I felt a heavy impact; it seemed the Wreck had finally reached the seabed. I had no time to linger or worry about what Bearded Man was holding; my life was at stake. If I didn't get out soon, I would surely die.
Just as I was about to leave, I heard that 'squeaking' sound again. This was bad; the Bloodsucker Worms were closing in. I aimed for the opening that Mai Lao had broken and summoned all my strength to swim upward. I could distinctly feel something chasing me from behind, getting closer by the second.
As soon as I felt pain in my calves, I finally burst out of the cabin. Turning around, I saw two Bloodsucker Worms clinging to my legs, gnawing at them. I quickly drew my dagger and killed those two wretched creatures.
Enduring the pain, just as I was about to leave, Bearded Man's head suddenly popped out of the opening. To my surprise, he was still alive; I had thought he would have been devoured by the Bloodsucker Worms by now. However, due to the narrowness of the cabin opening and his large frame, he was stuck at his waist.
Bearded Man struggled desperately, bubbles escaping from his mouth as he gasped for air. Floating above him, our eyes met when he looked up. He reached out his hand, mumbling something through gritted teeth, his face etched with agony. Although I couldn't understand what he was saying, it was clear he wanted me to save him.
I had always wished for his demise, but at that moment, I found myself unable to let him perish. Damn it, fine! I'll save him! I dove down and grabbed his arm, pulling with all my might upward. Yet, there was a powerful force pulling him down.
Bearded Man writhed in pain as I noticed that the water around him had turned red. Gripping his arms tightly, I mustered all my strength and yanked him upward until he finally broke free from the cabin.
But when he emerged, I realized he only had an upper body; everything below his waist was gone. Aside from blood, there were some intestines floating around. Bearded Man stared at me with eyes wide open in terror. In an instant, he succumbed to death.
Holding onto his half-corpse, just as I prepared to swim away, a pale hand reached out from the cabin and grasped Bearded Man's body fiercely, pulling it back in. Turning my head in horror, I saw two blood-red eyes peering out from the cabin—those of the female corpse in the coffin.
I felt electrified; every hair on my body stood on end. In a panic, I discarded Bearded Man's corpse and swam desperately toward the Sea Surface. The severe lack of oxygen made it feel like my lungs were about to explode; dizziness overwhelmed me as hallucinations began to set in.
Finally breaking through the Sea Surface, life returned to me once more. Floating on the ocean's surface, resting my weary body, everything had come so suddenly. Surviving multiple brushes with death taught me one crucial lesson: when it's not your time to die, you won't; but when it is your time, no matter how hard you try to live, you simply can't escape it.
The sea was shrouded in darkness, with no moonlight tonight. The breeze was gentle, pleasantly brushing against my skin as I lay flat on the surface of the water, like a floating corpse. I was exhausted, utterly drained, and all I wanted was to fall asleep immediately. What frustrated me the most was that in the end, I still hadn’t obtained what the Bearded Man had in his possession; everything felt futile.
The Bearded Man was now dead. The treasure he had taken from the mouth of that female corpse seemed to have returned to its rightful owner. The identity of that female corpse and the man in black had become even more enigmatic. It appeared that unraveling these mysteries would require some time.
I didn’t know where Jiao Ba and Mai Lao were at that moment, but at least I knew they were still alive. I also wondered how Jenny and Li Xin were faring. After resting for about ten minutes, I prepared to swim toward the direction of our fishing boat...
