That night, under the organization of Mai Lao, we set out to sea again. We made our way to the vicinity of the Wreck, and after quickly swimming up to the deck, the Hatch of the ship was opened, allowing us to enter one by one.
However, as soon as we stepped inside, the Underwater Light began to flicker incessantly. Then those ghostly shadows appeared, followed by the familiar face of a woman reappearing before my eyes. The corpse glared at me with blood-red eyes, its sharp fangs clearly visible. In that moment, I realized she wanted to kill me; she intended to put me to death.
I wanted to call for help, but when I turned around, I discovered that I was alone in the cabin. Where were Mai Lao and the others? Why had they all disappeared? The female corpse laughed at me with a chilling "huh huh," and that eerie smile sent shivers down my spine. I turned to escape, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't open the Hatch; it wouldn't budge at all.
The corpse drew closer and closer. I could see her tilting her head, blood flowing from her mouth—she looked utterly terrifying. Just then, she lunged at me with outstretched arms, and I screamed in a frenzy...
"Ah..." I gasped softly as I suddenly opened my eyes. The room was dark; the moonlight was dim. Jiao Ba's snoring sounded beside me. I was still in the Rest Cabin; everything had been a nightmare. For some reason, every time I saw that woman's face, I ended up having nightmares in the middle of the night. It seemed this woman brought me not only pressure but also severe mental torment.
I turned over and was about to go back to sleep when I faintly heard some voices—someone seemed to be talking in their sleep. The voice was intermittent and trembling; I couldn't make out what was being said. I quietly got out of bed and listened closely—it turned out to be Shunzi.
I walked over to Shunzi's bedside and saw him curled up on his side. He had his legs drawn up to his abdomen and his arms wrapped around them like a shrimp. He was shaking all over and mumbling incoherently.
I hurriedly sat down beside him and softly called out, "Shunzi, Shunzi, what's wrong?"
Shunzi didn't respond; he continued shaking uncontrollably. What was happening to him? Was he sick? I reached out to touch his forehead—it was hot, like a little furnace. It seemed he had a fever.
I gently pushed him a few times. "Shunzi, wake up, wake up."
After several attempts to rouse him, Shunzi still didn't open his eyes; he just kept mumbling something. Leaning closer to his ear, I heard him softly say, "Help me, help me..."
What on earth was going on? I quickly called out for the sleeping Jiao Ba. When Jiao Ba saw Shunzi's condition, he frowned and said, "What's wrong with him?"
"How the hell would I know? You keep an eye on Shunzi; I'm going to find Li Xin." Without waiting for Jiao Ba's response, I rushed out of the cabin.
I didn't care what time it was or whether it was midnight; saving someone was more important. I banged loudly on Li Xin's resting cabin door and shouted, "Li Xin! Li Xin! Open the door!"
"Just a moment!" came Jenny's voice from inside.
When the Hatch opened, Jenny asked me, "What's wrong, Loyalty and Righteousness? Why are you in such a hurry?"
"Where's Li Xin? Hurry and get him to come with me to save someone. Shunzi has a high fever and is unconscious," I said anxiously.
"What? Shunzi is unconscious?" Jenny also showed a look of surprise.
At that moment, Li Xin's voice suddenly came from inside, "Wait for me a moment; I'll put on my clothes and come right over."
After waiting outside the Hatch for a few seconds, Li Xin came out holding a medical kit and said, "Let's go; I'll check it out with you."
"I'll go with you too," Jenny said, glancing at me. I nodded, and the three of us quickly headed back.
However, when I returned to the Rest Cabin, I was completely stunned. The lights in the Rest Cabin were already on, but what I saw was that all the sailors except Jiao Ba were curled up on their beds, trembling all over, mumbling something. Their condition was exactly the same as Shunzi's earlier.
"Lao Ba, what's wrong with them?" I asked Jiao Ba, unable to believe what I was seeing.
Jiao Ba was sitting beside Shunzi's bed. He glanced at me but didn't answer my question. Instead, he said to Li Xin, "Li Xin, you need to check on them quickly; are they sick?"
Li Xin hurried over and took out medical instruments to examine them. I observed closely; Shunzi's face was pale, but his lips were slightly purple. He had not regained consciousness. I looked at the others; their symptoms were almost identical—pale faces and purple lips.
Jenny glanced at me with a worried expression and asked, "What happened to them? They were fine just a moment ago."
I shook my head gently and replied, "I don't know; I only realized it when I woke up in the middle of the night."
Li Xin first checked Shunzi; she frowned and shook her head. Then she examined the other sailors as well. I watched anxiously from the side but felt helpless since I had no medical knowledge.
"Li Xin, what's going on? Are they all okay?" I asked urgently.
Li Xin stood up and said, "I checked them all just now; their physical conditions are completely normal. They aren't sick at all."
"Not sick? Do they look like they're not sick right now?" I asked, trying to suppress my frustration.
"From a medical perspective, they are indeed not sick, but I am quite puzzled as to why they have a fever," Li Xin said, furrowing her brows.
"Damn it, this is ridiculous! Are you even a doctor? Can you actually diagnose anything?" I was getting a bit angry. After all this time, she just said they weren't sick. Anyone could see that it was more than just being unwell; they looked like they were on the brink of serious illness.
Li Xin shot me a glare and replied, "I'm just stating the facts. If you think I’m wrong, then you can take a look yourself."
"If I could diagnose them, why would I need you?" I retorted.
"Enough, Brother Yi. This has nothing to do with Li Xin. They don't seem sick to me either," Jiao Ba interrupted before I could finish my sentence.
"Lao Ba, what do you mean by that?" I asked, feeling a bit uneasy myself. If it were just Shunzi who was sick, it could be explained away, but now several people were showing similar symptoms, which felt off. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, but Jiao Ba's comment made me think there was something more unusual going on.
"Brother Yi, you should check if the other sailors are experiencing the same thing," Jiao Ba urged anxiously.
I nodded and turned to head towards the other Rest Cabins. Sure enough, just as Jiao Ba suspected, the other sailors exhibited the same symptoms; they were all curled up in their beds shivering. This was becoming serious. I called for Mai Lao and briefed him on the situation.
We rushed back to the Rest Cabin together. As soon as we entered, Mai Lao asked, "What’s going on here?"
At that moment, Jiao Ba was sitting by Shunzi's side, one hand feeling Shunzi's forehead while the other held his wrist. Without looking back, he muttered, "They must be possessed..."
