We ran all the way back to the place where we had rested before, finally stopping to catch our breath. All three of us were panting heavily; it felt more exhausting than being on the battlefield, and we were in quite a state.
“Did those... damn bugs follow us?” I bent over, hands on my knees, looking at Shunzi.
Shunzi wiped the sweat from his forehead and said, “I don’t know. I didn’t dare to look back the entire way.”
“Damn it, we almost died! What the hell were those things?” I cursed.
“A terrifying creature. Old Wang’s death is a prime example,” Changshan said, glancing at me.
I knew they were terrifying creatures, but what kind of bugs could be so horrifying? That was the crux of the matter.
“Do you know what kind of bugs those are?” I tentatively asked Changshan.
Changshan squatted down, his face looking somewhat pale as he replied, “I can’t be sure. I remember hearing about similar creatures before. They’re not ordinary bugs; it’s said they might be... a consequence of a curse from ancient emperors.”
A curse? What did that mean? Where did this curse come from? I still didn’t quite understand. “What do these bugs have to do with this so-called curse?”
Changshan slowly shook his head. “I can’t explain it clearly. It seems to be a curse related to the dead. Whether it’s true or not, I wouldn’t dare to say.”
It seemed this small island indeed harbored unspeakable secrets. Did this so-called curse have anything to do with the Shriveled Old Man? And how did Changshan know about such things? Was he merely a sailor, or was there more to him?
“Brother Yi, what are you thinking about?” Shunzi nudged me.
I glanced at both of them and said, “Let’s go back and check again to see if those damn things followed us.”
Since we entered this jungle, it seemed that the swarm of strange bugs hadn’t followed us. If they truly wanted to kill us, they could have easily chased us down; their speed was unimaginable.
“Huh? Brother Yi, are we really going back? Forget it; I think we shouldn’t go there again. It’s too dangerous,” Shunzi said, sounding a bit scared.
I shot him a glance. “You two stay here and wait for me. If I’m not back in twenty minutes, go find Mai Lao. Don’t wait for me.”
Just as I finished speaking and was about to leave, Changshan suddenly stood up and said, “Loyalty and Righteousness, I’ll go with you. It’s better to have someone else around in case something happens.”
He had a serious demeanor, his face set in determination. Seeing Changshan's attitude, Shunzi could only respond gallantly, "Damn it, fine, I'll go too. Let's go, Brother Yi."
The three of us quietly made our way out of the jungle. We walked slowly, not daring to make a sound. One reason was to avoid attracting the attention of those strange insects, and the other was that we had no lighting tools.
The flashlight was with Jiao Ba, and we had no torches left, so we could only proceed cautiously. If we accidentally stepped into a pile of bugs, it would truly be the end for us.
As we neared the edge of the jungle, we didn't encounter a single strange insect. We exchanged glances, all feeling a bit odd. How could there be no bugs at all on this path?
I whispered to them, "Something's off. Stay alert; these damn bugs are clever."
But when we reached the entrance of the jungle, we were all stunned. The area by the shore was eerily quiet; aside from a few unburned torches on the ground, there was nothing else. The group of red insects had vanished without a trace. All we could hear were the sounds of the waves and the wind.
I glanced at them and said, "Let's go check it out."
We quietly stepped out of the jungle, moving towards the shore while observing our surroundings. "This is really messed up," Shunzi muttered. "Not only are the bugs gone, but even Old Wang's body is missing."
Changshan's words reminded me that Old Wang's bones were also nowhere to be found, as if none of this had ever happened. The bloodstains on the shore were the only evidence of what had just occurred.
Our raft was still anchored by the left side of the small island. This was an opportunity; as long as we boarded the raft, we could leave. But if we just walked away now, we'd never find answers to these bizarre happenings.
While I was deep in thought, Shunzi suddenly exclaimed, "Hey, Brother Yi! Do you... do you see that person next to the raft?"
Changshan chimed in, "Yeah, it looks like there's someone over there."
What? A person? I quickly looked over towards the raft and indeed saw someone standing by its edge. In the dim moonlight, I could make out a figure; it was none other than the shriveled old man from before.
His hair was unmistakable. His frail form seemed weak against the shore's breeze, as if it could blow him away at any moment. But I knew his abilities far surpassed his appearance.
"Here he is again." What did this old man want? At that moment, I felt a mix of anxiety and unease.
"Who is this person?" Shunzi asked me.
"I don't know, but I've seen him a few times before." I stared at the shriveled old man; he stood completely still against the wind, like an ancient tree rooted in place, with only his hair flying wildly in the air.
"I feel like this person is unusual. Where did he come from?" Changshan said as he pulled a dagger from his thigh.
"I don't know. I saw him when we first landed on this island. He seems to have been following us, like a ghost," I replied, my tone somewhat somber as I sensed the environment around us shifting.
"Damn, playing tricks and scaring us. Let's go check it out," Changshan shot me a glance.
I steeled myself. "Alright, let's go."
I drew my Diving Knife, and the three of us headed toward the Old Man. Fear turned into anger, and madness clouded my reason. At that moment, I had only one thought: regardless of whether he was human or ghost, he was going to feel my blade twice. I had to get to the bottom of this.
The Old Man seemed completely unfazed by our approach. We advanced with our daggers drawn and fury in our hearts, but just as we reached halfway, I suddenly heard a strange 'crunching' sound that was hard to identify.
I immediately stopped and asked, "Did you hear that noise?"
Shunzi listened intently and replied, "It sounds like some kind of 'crunching' noise."
At that moment, Changshan's expression changed dramatically as he growled, "Not good! It seems something is coming!"
As soon as he finished speaking, I turned to look back at the Old Man and was startled; my face paled in fear. A swarm of red creatures was crawling past the Old Man and heading straight toward us...
