“Oh my God, what... what is happening?” I said in a daze.
Jiao Ba looked up at the sky, murmuring softly, “Red... the sky has turned red. This is bad; something might happen. Brother Yi, we need to leave immediately.”
“What’s wrong, Lao Ba?” I was taken aback by Jiao Ba's sudden change.
“It might be a corpse transformation. I just remembered that black and red coffin is usually used to suppress evil spirits.” Jiao Ba’s face turned pale.
“Corpse transformation? What are we waiting for? Let’s hurry!” Changshan immediately ran to the side, placing his hands in front of his abdomen, ready to support us. “You go first, quickly.”
There was no time to waste. I urged Jiao Ba to go ahead. The tomb raider was indeed skilled; he stepped onto Changshan’s hands, and with a strong push from Changshan, Jiao Ba shot up like a rocket. The two of them coordinated perfectly, and Jiao Ba soared out effortlessly, demonstrating impressive escape skills.
“Changshan, why don’t you come up next? I’ll help you.” I intended to stay behind since he had accompanied me; I couldn’t just leave him behind.
“Stop hesitating and hurry up! I’m waiting here!”
Since he insisted, I didn’t argue any further. Almost like Jiao Ba, I stepped on his hands and with his help, I managed to shoot out as well. But once I emerged, I realized the entire sky had turned blood red.
The whole island was stained crimson; everything around us was drenched in blood red. Even the Tomb Mound, split open by lightning, appeared red. In my vision, there was nothing but that color—like hell itself. What the hell was going on?
“Brother Yi, stop dawdling! Come help pull Changshan out!” Jiao Bayi shouted urgently, prompting me to quickly lean down.
We extended our hands below. “Come on, grab on!”
Changshan surged upward and grabbed my arm. Just as I was about to pull him up, I suddenly saw the Male Corpse inside the coffin slowly sit up.
At that moment, I was so startled that my eyes widened, and I couldn't even speak. I almost let go of Changshan's hand. Jiao Ba, of course, noticed too and shouted, "Hurry up, Brother Yi, pull him up!"
I quickly regained my composure and pulled upward with all my strength. Changshan seemed to sense something was wrong. "What's wrong, Loyalty and Righteousness? Is there something behind me?" His voice trembled slightly, as if he had thought of something.
"Don't worry, there's nothing there," I lied, but I had seen with my own eyes that the Male Corpse had crawled out of the coffin and was slowly making its way toward Changshan.
I let out a loud shout, and together with Jiao Ba, we pulled hard upward. Changshan was quite agile; he climbed up following our force. But just as he was about to get out, I suddenly felt a powerful force from behind yanking at Changshan.
With a scream, "Ah~~," Changshan fell back into the pit. The moment Jiao Ba and I relaxed our grip, we were almost pulled down by that force. Thankfully, neither of us let go; otherwise, he would have fallen straight into the coffin.
Changshan hung there below us while Jiao Ba and I lay on the ground, stretching our arms down. We were all in a messy situation, caught off guard.
At that moment, I saw that it was indeed the Male Corpse holding onto Changshan's leg. It seemed to want to climb up as well. When Changshan turned to look back, he shouted in horror, "Oh my God, it really has turned into a corpse! Loyalty and Righteousness! Jiao Ba! Hurry up and pull me up! Quickly!" He yelled while kicking the Male Corpse's head with his other leg.
"We're trying! This damn thing is too strong; we can't hold on!" I shouted at the top of my lungs. The Male Corpse's strength was overwhelming; Jiao Ba and I could barely maintain our position.
"Get away from me! Damn it!" Changshan was going a bit crazy as he kicked the Male Corpse fiercely. But no matter how much he kicked, it had no effect; the corpse didn't feel pain at all. Its mouth gaped wide open as it stared with lifeless eyes, emitting a low growl from its throat.
At that moment, Jiao Ba hurriedly pulled out his gun and aimed at the Male Corpse's head. Bang! Bang! Bang! Three shots rang out. After those shots, the Male Corpse's head was nearly shattered, green viscous liquid bursting out from inside its skull as it finally released its grip on Changshan.
I gritted my teeth and shouted loudly as I pulled upward with all my might. Changshan was finally yanked out. Once he was up, we both collapsed onto the ground, panting heavily.
"My God, you finally made it up! That thing was incredibly strong!" I said as I slowly sat up from the ground.
Changshan seemed still dazed, staring blankly at the sky. "Are you okay? Is everything alright?" Jiao Ba asked while lying on the ground beside him.
Changshan shook his head lightly. After a moment, he sat up and said, "That was close. We almost didn't make it. This isn't a place to linger; we need to hurry and regroup with Mai Lao and the others."
The three of us immediately got to our feet, but just as we were about to leave, the sight before us froze us in our tracks. Surrounding us were nearly a hundred corpses that had just crawled out from the Tomb Mounds, and many more were emerging from other Tomb Mounds.
I surveyed the situation around us. The entire Cemetery's Tomb Mounds had cracked open. If I wasn't mistaken, this Cemetery would soon be overrun by these undead.
These corpses were almost identical to the Male Corpse we had encountered earlier. They showed no signs of decay; each body was emaciated, skin tightly clinging to bones, with various expressions on their faces.
Some had exposed teeth, others lacked jaws entirely, while some had disheveled hair. There were also those missing limbs or half a head. The corpses varied in size and gender, including children's bodies. Their twisted and broken forms evoked not only fear but also disgust.
They all wore ancient clothing, some even donned battle gear, though the degree of decay varied, making their attire appear ragged. They were covered in dirt and emitted a low, guttural growl from their mouths.
These undead even wielded weapons of varying lengths. Their bodies swayed as they slowly approached us.
"Damn it! These... these corpses are all alive! Lao Ba, what the hell is going on? Did they all turn?" We looked around anxiously since there was almost no way out; the group of Corpses was closing in from all sides.
"I've never seen such severe corpse transformation before. The entire Cemetery has turned; we're done for if we can't find a way out," Changshan gripped his spear tightly, his eyes darting around nervously.
"This doesn't make sense. Yes, there's corpse transformation happening, but not like this. The whole Cemetery is affected. Think, Brother Yi! We need to think!" Jiao Ba was equally frantic, scratching his head in thought.
"What are you thinking about? We need to figure out how to get the hell out of here!"
I growled quietly, not daring to raise my voice too much for fear that it might provoke them into action. Sweat trickled down my forehead, and my hand holding the spear began to tremble.
The number of Corpses continued to swell; there must have been at least a few hundred by now. If this kept up, it wouldn't be long before we were completely overwhelmed. If things were this dire for us, I feared Jenny and Mai Lao would be in no better position unless they had managed to escape up the mountain; otherwise, they too would be trapped in this nightmare.
"We need to find a chance to break out; we can't just sit here and wait for death," Changshan said quietly, appearing somewhat calmer now.
"Retreat, retreat, retreat, quickly." The three of us slowly backed away, trying our best to avoid the corpses that had just crawled out of the Tomb Mound. We dodged left and right, careful not to move too fast for fear of attracting their attention.
But it was still no use; the Cemetery was simply too vast. No matter how we retreated or which direction we took, there were endless corpses crawling out of the Tomb Mound, all heading straight for us.
"Damn it, damn it, we're finished; they're going to surround us."
I changed direction again and continued to back away. As we passed by those corpses, they would open their mouths wide and reach out with claw-like hands. A few times, I nearly got caught, but thankfully I was highly focused and managed to dodge them all.
These corpses weren't moving quickly; it was just that there were so many of them that there was hardly any space to walk. So when they failed to catch us, they wouldn't chase us down rapidly. Some merely stood in place and yelled at us loudly. The sound was not only grating but also terrifying.
As we fled, Jiao Ba suddenly said, "These corpses were all people from the Ming Dynasty. Anyone wearing armor is dressed in military attire from the early Ming Dynasty. I can confirm now that everyone buried here is from the Ming Dynasty."
"What the hell? Why didn't you say that earlier? What good does it do now? The most important thing right now is figuring out how to get out of here. What should we do? If we can't think of anything, then I'll have to use a grenade."
At this point, using a grenade seemed like the only option left. We had tried everything else but still couldn't find a way out. We ended up making a large circle and nearly returned to where we started. Now it was a matter of running as far as we could; those with strong luck would survive, while those with thin luck would perish.
"Brother Yi, don't use the grenade yet; let me think for a moment. They've already suffered enough in death; I don't want to blow them to pieces so that they don't even have a complete corpse left." At this moment, Jiao Ba surprisingly felt sympathy for these corpses. He didn't consider whether they would feel sympathy for us when they tore us apart—by then, it would be too late...
