As Principal Zhang of Key High School, his death was not a trivial matter. We certainly had to inform the vice principal of Yucai High School and all the teachers immediately. When we conveyed this news to them, their reactions varied greatly.
The vice principal's expression flickered with joy for a moment before being replaced by deep sorrow. It seemed that after Principal Zhang's death, he would become the head of Yucai High School. Most of the male teachers appeared indifferent; it made no difference to them who was the principal. Many of the younger female teachers seemed relieved, as they would no longer have to worry about harassment.
Hu Jiajia's expression was particularly interesting. Upon hearing the news, she seemed frightened, then displayed a worried look, as if afraid of being discovered for something. She stood out from the rest.
In fact, when I asked Hu Jiajia yesterday whether Principal Zhang had ever harassed her, her eyes had darted away. I was convinced she was lying; at that moment, I thought her evasiveness stemmed from a girl's shyness. However, it now seemed more complicated.
Gao Rui was currently in class, and through the glass, I realized he was a biology teacher.
After class, when we informed Gao Rui about Principal Zhang's situation, his expression became quite complex.
Principal Zhang had always valued Gao Rui highly; his abilities were indeed commendable. Logically speaking, Principal Zhang treated Gao Rui well. Yet, secretly, Principal Zhang was a stalker and a pervert. This complicated mix of emotions was vividly displayed on Gao Rui's face.
Gao Rui seemed to want to say something but ultimately shook his head and swallowed his words.
"Gao Rui is quite suspicious," I said upon returning to the police station.
"How is Gao Rui suspicious?" Guan Zengbin shot me a glare and crossed his arms. "Are you jealous that he's better looking than you?"
I touched my face and replied, "It's not like I have a beard or anything. Am I really going to be jealous of him? Principal Zhang valued Gao Rui the most; if anyone knew about Principal Zhang's whereabouts, it should be him. Besides, Principal Zhang had been missing for three days, yet Gao Rui showed no reaction at all."
"As far as I know, the first person to report it wasn't Gao Rui but a female teacher," I added.
"Do you have any evidence?" Guan Zengbin asked.
I spread my hands. "No evidence."
"Then what are you talking about?" Guan Zengbin retorted.
"All we need to do is check Gao Rui's recent activities!" I said to Guan Zengbin. "If Gao Rui was in the principal's office that night or at the construction site, a lot of things could be resolved. By the way, do you think the Old Zhang he saw could have been Gao Rui?"
At that moment, Gu Chen spoke up, "It's simple. Just let Old Zhang take a look at Gao Rui, and we'll know. Even if he didn't see his face clearly, he should have an idea of his general appearance and build."
"Someone has turned themselves in," Xiao Liu pushed open the office door.
"What?" I was taken aback.
"Someone has turned themselves in," Liu Jixu confirmed.
I frowned. Just moments ago, we had informed the teachers that Principal Zhang's body had been discovered, and now someone was turning themselves in. This meant it had to be someone from the school.
I asked, "What is this person's name?"
"He said his name is Gao Rui," Xiao Liu replied.
"What?" I was stunned again.
"He said his name is Gao Rui!" Xiao Liu exclaimed.
The three of us exchanged glances, seemingly unable to believe that the murderer was Gao Rui. Although I had my suspicions about him, I had no evidence at all. Besides, from what I knew of Gao Rui, he was a mature and composed person. How could he have lost his cool in just a short hour?
I pulled out a cigarette and lit it. "I need to sort through my thoughts."
Guan Zengbin asked for one too. "I need one to calm my nerves."
"What are you doing smoking? You're a girl," I swatted her hand away.
"Even though I smoke, drink, have tattoos, and curse like a sailor, I know I'm a good girl..." Guan Zengbin said lightly.
After a cigarette.
We met Gao Rui in the interrogation room.
"Are you going to confess?" I asked cautiously.
Gao Rui let out a long sigh and then began to tell us a story.
One night, Principal Zhang asked Gao Rui to prepare a document.
When Gao Rui returned to the apartment he shared with Hu Jiajia, he realized he had left the materials in the principal's office, so he went back to retrieve them. On the way, he noticed that the lights in the Principal's Office were still on from a distance. Gao Rui found it odd; usually, at this hour, the principal had already left.
Before long, the lights in the principal's office went out.
As Gao Rui reached the school gate, Principal Zhang walked out.
The principal was dressed casually today, and most notably, he was wearing a hat. This attire made Principal Zhang appear quite young and energetic.
Gao Rui smiled, but his heart was bleeding.
"Do you know why I am valued by the principal?" Gao Rui said with a faint smile.
"Could it be that you know Principal Zhang's secret?" I boldly replied.
Gao Rui glanced at me. "You're very clever."
In fact, Gao Rui had long known about the principal's sordid secret. He was aware that Principal Zhang often abused his position to exploit new female teachers. Once, Gao Rui had witnessed Principal Zhang committing such an act firsthand; he had intended to expose it. However, later on, Principal Zhang and that teacher came to plead with him not to say anything about it.
Gao Rui felt a sense of sorrow; clearly, it was Principal Zhang who had violated that female teacher, yet the victim was begging him to spare the perpetrator.
So many people had been harmed, yet not one chose to report Principal Zhang to reveal his true nature.
Since those directly involved didn’t care, why should he make a fuss?
Thus, Gao Rui became Principal Zhang's most valued person, though it was merely to silence his own conscience. Gao Rui initially thought this arrangement was not too bad, until one day, a person appeared by his side and became his colleague. This person was none other than Hu Jiajia, who had just come here for an internship.
Gao Rui and Hu Jiajia were from the same high school, and he had always regarded her as his little sister.
Gao Rui naturally understood why Principal Zhang wanted to keep Hu Jiajia around.
He warned Principal Zhang that if he ever found out that Principal Zhang had harmed Hu Jiajia, he would expose everything.
Principal Zhang agreed.
But now there was a stalker involved.
At first, Gao Rui did not realize that the stalker was Principal Zhang himself, as he believed that Principal Zhang would not risk his future for a woman.
"Actually, that night when I went out, one reason was to gather some materials," Gao Rui said slowly. "The other reason was because of a note. I saw someone leaving a note for the stalker, but I left it there untouched. I wanted to see who the stalker really was."
I nodded and asked, "Do you know someone named Zhang Mingliang?"
"I don't know him," Gao Rui shook his head.
"That note was left for the stalker by Zhang Mingliang," I said.
I had intended to tell Gao Rui about Zhang Mingliang's feelings for him, but after some thought, I decided against it.
On one hand, Gao Rui despised the principal's character; on the other hand, he had to rely on the power given to him by the principal. He spent each day in turmoil, and seeing Principal Zhang out late at night made him wonder if he was once again involved with an intern in his office. However, he noticed something unusual about Principal Zhang today.
There was a glinting knife in his hand.
Gao Rui often helped Principal Zhang retrieve things from his home; he even had a key to Principal Zhang's house. Thus, he knew that the direction he was heading was not towards home.
Gao Rui decided to follow him and see what was going on.
Soon, Gao Rui discovered that Principal Zhang was heading towards an abandoned construction site.
"Principal Zhang is that Stalker!" Upon witnessing this scene, Gao Rui felt a surge of anger; Principal Zhang had clearly deceived him.
It seemed that Principal Zhang had scouted the site in advance, hiding a knife inside a paint bucket.
"That's dog blood, not paint," I reminded Gao Rui.
Then, Gao Rui spotted someone and was taken aback. It was Hu Jiajia. But how could Hu Jiajia be here when she was supposed to be at home? There was only one possibility: this person looked almost identical to Hu Jiajia, but she wasn't her.
The "Hu Jiajia" stretched out her hand, signaling Principal Zhang to follow her.
In the pitch-black night, a man and a woman slowly ascended the stairs.
Gao Rui knew this person wasn't Hu Jiajia and realized who the Stalker was. He didn't know what the man and woman were up to, but in this environment, he felt fear. Gao Rui understood that Principal Zhang had a knife—what was it for?
He left the construction site but didn't go far before feeling uneasy and returning.
It was around ten o'clock, and Gao Rui knew the two hadn't left yet. He decided to go take a look.
However, Gao Rui stepped into a trap.
Fearing he might alert Principal Zhang, he struggled to escape. At that moment, Old Zhang arrived.
Gao Rui hadn't actually left; he was hiding on the other side of the building. He saw no one come out; Principal Zhang was still upstairs, and moreover, he had a knife in his hand.
A knife.
Clearly meant for killing.
Around eleven o'clock, an object suddenly fell from above, landing on the sandy ground with barely a sound.
It was a corpse, a headless corpse.
Gao Rui held his breath, realizing that Principal Zhang had committed murder.
Around eleven-thirty, the old man left with a bucket in hand.
At midnight, Principal Zhang emerged from the building.
He still held the long knife, glinting coldly in the moonlight.
Principal Zhang approached the body and hoisted it up.
Gao Rui was on the other side of the pile of sand.
He witnessed Principal Zhang open a manhole cover at the construction site and throw the body inside, then he followed suit and stepped in himself.
"So when did you kill him?" Even though Gao Rui came forward to confess, Guan Zengbin still couldn't believe that Gao Rui was the murderer.
Gao Rui suddenly burst into laughter, only to be followed by tears: "Seeing this scene, I understood. The Stalker is Principal Zhang; he left a message at Hu Jiajia's house. He must have mistaken that person for Hu Jiajia, which is why he killed him. This corpse has no head, and the Stalker threatened to cut off Hu Jiajia's head."
"And so, I came up with a plan."
