Inside the Autopsy Room, red lanterns hung outside, casting a warm glow, while inside, the cold white light illuminated the scene. The intersection of lights created a soft radiance, and in the distance, the sound of firecrackers could be heard. Due to the severity of the injuries from the fall, we were unable to remove the clothing from the female corpse and had to resort to scissors to cut through her garments.
It was winter, and the girl was dressed in layers, making our task quite laborious.
Guan Zengbin began the autopsy while Gu Chen and I carefully examined each piece of clothing, hoping to find clues that might identify the deceased. From the pocket of her Red Down Jacket, I pulled out a neatly folded Origami. It was made from pink stationery, exuding a romantic charm typical of young girls.
As I unfolded the Origami, two large characters appeared on the Pink Stationery—Suicide Note.
The note was filled with writing on an entire page. The handwriting was delicate and elegant, clearly penned by a young girl. I instructed Gu Chen to continue searching through her other clothes for any additional clues while I focused on this so-called Suicide Note.
The Suicide Note read:
"I never dreamed that this would happen to me. Whenever I close my eyes, the events of that day replay vividly in my mind. But I cannot speak of it; after all... I don’t even know what happened or why it turned out this way. Perhaps it’s all just fate.
But I won’t harbor any resentment; after all, I should have died ten years ago. To have lived an extra ten years is already a stroke of luck. Meeting these people has brought me great satisfaction. I know he didn’t mean it; I know he has always been gentle and kind; I know he loved me.
I realize that my actions are an escape, but it’s all I can do—escape. My departure may be the best choice. So be it; no more pain or entanglement with being alive. So be it; no need to bear all the consequences. So be it; I just want to sleep peacefully.
But after I'm gone, I will never again sit on my father's bicycle and share stories from school with him. After I'm gone, I will never again pester my brother to buy me my favorite romance novels. After I'm gone, I will never again playfully tease in the rain.
I am leaving on a special holiday.
Perhaps on this joyful occasion, after I'm gone, you will feel less sorrow.
Love you all, Qi."
After reading this Suicide Note, I furrowed my brow tightly. The tone suggested it was written by a teenage girl. There were several key points in the note that might help us analyze some useful information.
The girl named Qi had experienced something she could not accept, leading her to choose suicide. The question then arises: what was it that she could not accept? The use of "he" in the note indicated that the person responsible for her distress was someone she knew—likely an acquaintance.
Moreover, Qi mentioned that she should have died ten years ago. Given her age at death, she must have been just a child back then; what could have happened to her? Lastly, Qi was still attending school—presumably high school—and importantly, she seemed to have chosen to end her life on this special holiday.
We can imagine a scenario where someone familiar to Qi did something utterly unacceptable to her—something she felt she could not reveal to anyone else. Overwhelmed by inner turmoil and suffering, she ultimately chose to end her life on this Universal Celebration day.
It is highly likely that she encountered this acquaintance again on New Year's Eve, which left her unable to face reality.
However, all of this was revealed to me by the Suicide Note. As for whether this Suicide Note was written by Qi, it remains uncertain. If someone pushed Qi off the Rainbow Bridge and forged this Suicide Note, it is certainly a possibility.
To verify the authenticity of this Suicide Note, we need to examine some handwriting to see if it matches Qi's.
At that moment, Gu Chen nudged my arm, prompting me to look at what he was holding. I turned to see a green short-sleeve shirt that looked rather outdated. However, when Gu Chen showed me the front of the shirt, I understood his intention. There was a school badge on the left chest and a line of text—Yumu City Second High School.
It seemed that Qi was a student at Yumu City Second High School.
From the clothes Qi wore, it was evident that her family background was likely not very good. Both her outer down jacket and the sweater and even the underwear she wore showed no brand names, and their styles were quite plain, indicating they had been worn for some time.
I looked at the clothes while Gu Chen focused on the Suicide Note.
After a while, Gu Chen said to me, “From this Suicide Note, it feels like it could be someone familiar. But what could be something so unacceptable for a girl that she wouldn’t want to share with others?”
I sighed and replied, “If I’m guessing correctly, it should be sexual assault.”
“Sexual assault?” Gu Chen asked.
I nodded and glanced at Guan Zengbin, who was still performing the Autopsy on the body, and answered, “Yes, if I’m not mistaken, it should be sexual assault. In Our Country, education regarding these matters for both girls and boys is severely lacking. Many adults who have been assaulted choose to remain silent and do not dare to report it.”
Upon hearing this, Guan Zengbin expressed his deep feelings: “Some netizens online are truly infuriating. When they hear about a girl being raped, instead of condemning the Murderer, they start picking apart the victim’s faults. They say things like her clothing was too revealing or that being out late at night means she’s not a good girl.”
Guan Zengbin snorted coldly: “We’re all in this line of work; we know that those Murderers don’t choose girls like that. They often go for those who dress traditionally and appear weak. Conversely, those who look tougher give off an impression that they are harder to deal with, so clothing has little to do with it!”
“And what about those who are out late at night?” Guan Zengbin continued angrily: “If we police officers are out on duty at night, does that mean we’re not good people?”
I shook my head and said, “Fortunately, these people are in the minority. For me, they simply do not understand the reasoning behind it; they are purely evil. They deliberately shift public opinion onto women as if the fault lies with them. Once a rape occurs and such opinions dominate, some women subconsciously feel they are at fault and thus do not dare to report it.”
Gu Chen frowned and asked, “But why do they do this?”
I scoffed softly before sighing again: “Because deep down in their hearts, they already have thoughts of wanting to assault others. Once such public opinion becomes mainstream, even if they commit rape, women won’t dare to report it. If it weren’t for those firmly defending women’s rights, they would have long since embarked on a path of crime.”
I glanced at the body on the Autopsy table and said, “Such people existed fifty years ago, exist now, and will exist fifty years from now. Anyway, let’s not dwell on this matter; how is the body Autopsy coming along?”
Guan Zengbin sighed as well and replied, “The Autopsy is nearly done; the cause of death has been determined as fatal injuries from a high fall. Don’t be fooled by how there doesn’t seem to be much wrong with her abdomen; her internal organs are almost completely shattered. The broken spine was the fatal injury; she died almost instantly upon impact.”
As he spoke, Guan Zengbin showed us the female corpse's internal organs.
I looked over, and just as Guan Zengbin had said, Viscera was nearly completely shattered. Moreover, her abdomen was almost filled with blood, making it unbearable to witness. The sight of her broken arms and legs sent a shiver down my spine. This was perhaps the most brutal death I had ever seen.
Guan Zengbin continued, "The time of death was around three hours ago, approximately eight forty in the evening. At that time, there should have still been cars on the Rainbow Bridge; perhaps someone witnessed this scene. However, there are no cameras on the Rainbow Bridge itself because the bridge isn’t very long, although there are cameras at both ends."
Gu Chen said, "I'll go check the surveillance footage to see how Qi got here."
We nodded in agreement.
Guan Zengbin began to stitch up the body and asked me, "What do you think about this matter?"
I tugged at my hair and slowly replied, "Based on the current situation, I believe the likelihood of suicide is quite high. If I were to commit murder, I certainly wouldn’t choose this place. As you mentioned, at eight forty, there could have been cars or pedestrians passing by; it would be far too risky."
"But not all murderers are like you," Guan Zengbin looked at me and said. "Not every murderer has such skill; could it be a crime of passion?"
I fell silent for a moment and then said, "That is a possibility as well. However, we currently know nothing; it's time to ask about Qi at her school. She has been missing for three hours now, and at this hour, her family might be looking for her. But she doesn't have a phone on her; perhaps she comes from a poor family."
Guan Zengbin shook his head, dismissing it.
I added, "Check Qi's school, Yumu City Second High School; we should be able to find more information about her there."
Finally, glancing at the fireworks outside that showed no signs of stopping, I added, "However, this New Year’s celebration will likely be difficult for many."
