If we had known about this earlier, if we had known that the despicable Liu was doing this for a colleague's sister, perhaps we would have had a different view of Liu. Perhaps with Mary's abilities, she could have arranged for this sister to receive good medical treatment.
But now, everything is irretrievable. If Liu accepted the money, and especially such a large sum, it proves that he has already gone all in. Wu Zui once said something quite insightful: humans are a strange species. Just for the sake of a promise, the powerless Liu finally walked into the abyss of crime.
And once exposed, no matter the reason, Liu is doomed.
I rubbed my head, feeling an unbearable headache. The once close-knit Special Operations Group has completely fallen apart under Wu Zui's manipulation. Liu has fully become one of Wu Zui's people, while Guan Zengbin has been captured for over two months, Gu Chen has also been taken away, Mary is missing without a trace, and Captain Shao has yet to show up.
And I am now also a fugitive.
All of this is thanks to Wu Zui. Aside from Wu Zui's subordinates Lai San and Old Zhang, I have faced Wu Zui directly four times. The first encounter was a woman's case, and to this day I still cannot understand why all the evidence pointed to me in the end, making me feel as if I had done everything myself.
In the end, I arrested myself and ended up in the psychiatric hospital in Dongxing City. It was during that time that I realized my Criminal Profiling ability, while strong, also had severe side effects. Once I delved too deeply, it would lead to Self-Blame Delusion and turn me into a mental patient.
After more than a year of treatment, Captain Shao pulled me out of the psychiatric hospital.
Once out of the hospital, I rarely entered Criminal Profiling mode unless I truly couldn't think of any leads; otherwise, I avoided using it altogether because I knew my mental state could collapse at any moment.
The second real confrontation was during the Liu Yinyan kidnapping case when Wu Zui first appeared on everyone's radar. In that operation, we suffered another crushing defeat. We were subsequently pushed out of Dongxing City, and during this process, Liu gradually solidified his position as the head of the Qingcheng Criminal Police Team in Dongxing City.
All of this was orchestrated by Wu Zui; his control over human nature is meticulous. He found Liu, who was in desperate need of money, and gradually pulled him into the depths of crime. By this time, there was already a rift between us and Liu; however, during the Twelve Zodiac Signs murder case, we had no choice but to ally with Liu to rescue Guan Zengbin.
This was our third direct confrontation with Wu Zui. This time, Wu Zui kidnapped Guan Zengbin and killed a police officer while escaping from an underground pit in a way that I still do not understand. He framed me for the murder. Meanwhile, Liu became the replacement for Captain Shao and took over as the captain of Dongxing City's Qingcheng Criminal Police Team.
As a result, our Special Operations Group truly lost everything; each member was like a clay statue crossing a river—unable to protect themselves. At this moment, Wu Zui could utilize Liu's power to carry out his plans. Even when we realized that Liu was an insider, it was already too late; after all, no one would believe the defense of a murderer.
To this day, I still do not know what exactly Wu Zui is planning. However, since Guan Zengbin was captured over two months ago, we have not seen any movements from Wu Zui. Yet during these two months, I believe Wu Zui has certainly not been idle. What could this typical ****** Personality be plotting?
The fourth confrontation is happening right now.
In this confrontation, Wu Zui had directly brought both Gu Chen and me here. However, one question lingered: how did Wu Zui know we were in this place? The only ones who knew our whereabouts were me, Gu Chen, Mary, and Chen Bo. Gu Chen and Mary shouldn’t have gone out, so could it be Chen Bo?
I ran my hand through my hair, contemplating a possible scenario. Chen Bo must have figured out my identity and reported it to the City Bureau. The Qingcheng Criminal Police Team under Liu was responsible for this, which meant Liu must have notified Wu Zui, leading him to wait for us on the road.
I had considered before that Chen Bo might be trying to kill two birds with one stone—waiting for us to solve this case before reporting it upward. Now it seemed quite plausible.
At this moment, aside from Mary and Captain Shao, all the original members of the Special Operations Group were under Wu Zui's control. Our team's purpose was to capture Zhao Mingkun. Yet now, Zhao Mingkun's whereabouts were unknown, and I had no idea what she was doing.
Finally, I felt a sense of control returning to my body. I glanced at Wu Zui, who was currently facing away from me. If I could seize control of Wu Zui at this moment—or at least catch a glimpse of his face—then everything would be fine. After all, from Wu Zui's words, I knew he wouldn’t easily kill me.
Wu Zui had targeted me in so many cases; he had countless opportunities to kill me but chose not to. I didn’t understand why, but I knew that anyone who stayed by my side ultimately met a bad end. I remembered a fortune teller once told me that I was a star of calamity.
A calamity brings destruction; a solitary star signifies loneliness. When the star of calamity descends, those close to me will die in every direction.
This meant that anyone who was with me could not end well—be they family, friends, or lovers.
Perhaps on that snowy day over twenty years ago, I should have died.
My heart was in turmoil, and my head throbbed painfully.
With these thoughts in mind, I decided to take a risk against Wu Zui. I suddenly rolled off the bed and charged toward him. But just as my hand was about to touch Wu Zui, he turned around and kicked me down to the ground. Before I could struggle, he stepped on my head.
Standing on my head, Wu Zui slowly spoke, “What’s wrong? Do you still want to do something?”
I shouted angrily, “Where is Gu Chen? What have you done with him?”
Wu Zui smiled lightly; his voice remained soft as he replied, “Gu Chen is where he should be; you can’t see him yet. However, I can let you meet someone you’ve been longing for. How about that?”
"Who?" I asked. "Guan Zengbin?"
Wu Zui burst into laughter and said, "You're quite clever."
With that, Wu Zui clapped his hands.
Moments later, someone pushed open the door, and the person who entered was none other than Guan Zengbin.
"Guan Zengbin!" After such a long time, seeing Guan Zengbin again stirred a whirlwind of emotions within me, and tears streamed down my face. But soon after, my heart sank. Logically speaking, after not seeing me for so long, Guan Zengbin should have been just as excited.
But she wasn't; there was nothing at all.
Guan Zengbin looked at me coldly, as if I were a complete stranger. The sparkle in her eyes had long since faded; they seemed lifeless as they stared at me.
"What have you done to Guan Zengbin?" I struggled to look at Wu Zui, shouting in anger.
I knew Wu Zui had taken Guan Zengbin away, and that she was not in any real danger. However, I could only imagine the kind of torment and suffering she would endure at the hands of someone like Wu Zui. Despite having thought about this scenario thousands of times in my mind, facing it in reality made it impossible for me to accept.
Wu Zui sneered and said, "What did I do to her? Just a simple hypnosis. You see, I'm a disciple of Wei Demian. That old man has incredible hypnotic abilities. As his top disciple, I've naturally learned quite a bit. In an isolated environment, over the course of two months, hypnotizing a twenty-year-old girl with no professional training is actually quite easy."
"Guan Zengbin," Wu Zui called softly, "you know what to do when the time comes, right?"
Guan Zengbin nodded and replied, "I know what to do. I will definitely help you, Wu Meng."
"Huh?" Hearing Guan Zengbin's words left me utterly confused. "Guan Zengbin, I'm right here!"
Wu Zui laughed heartily as he walked over to Guan Zengbin's side. He gently cupped her face in his hands and kissed her cheek through his mask. "Shall we get married when we go back?"
"Alright." Guan Zengbin nodded and said, "Wu Meng, I knew you cared about me the most."
As I lay on the ground, watching Wu Meng rub her strange mask against Guan Zengbin's face, my mind went blank. I never expected Wu Zui to hypnotize Guan Zengbin, and it seemed that now Guan Zengbin believed that the masked person in front of him was Wu Meng, completely forgetting who I was.
"Who is she?" Wu Zui pointed at me on the ground.
Guan Zengbin took Wu Zui's hand and said, "This person is the one who brought me here, Wu Zui. She's a bad person."
"Me?" I pointed at myself, unable to speak for a long time.
Wu Zui laughed heartily and said, "Very good, Wu Zui. As long as I have her, my plan is halfway to success. I will become the hero Wu Meng who rescues her, while you will become that Wu Zui. Do you understand?"
I felt dazed and truly did not understand what Wu Zui meant.
"You mean you want to replace me and become me, while I become you?" I said in disbelief. "Just because of this mask you're wearing? Can you hypnotize Guan Zengbin? Can you hypnotize the whole world? Sooner or later, Guan Zengbin will recover. What will you do then?"
"Who said I want to escape?" Wu Zui laughed. "I just want to play one last game with you, and this time it concerns our lives. As for how I can become you, listen closely."
With that, Wu Zui slowly removed her mask but did not set it down; it still hovered in front of her face.
"I am Wu Meng."
That was my voice, or rather, it was almost indistinguishable from mine.
