Liu pointed his gun at Gu Chen, his face a mixture of helplessness and sadness. "You always act as if you are the epitome of justice, but often, extreme justice is just evil. Crossing that line, after the light comes darkness. We all know there is a lot of darkness in this world, and many criminals that you think deserve harsher punishment."
"But," Liu said firmly, "some people can be given a chance, while others cannot. If everyone could modify the laws according to their own will, this world would have descended into chaos long ago."
I looked at Gu Chen, whose face showed no emotion. I never imagined things would escalate to this point. If Gu Chen were the mole, everything would make sense. To be honest, I first met Gu Chen in the Special Operations Group, and we had a good relationship, but I couldn't understand why he would be an undercover agent.
Once I became a suspect and went underground, Gu Chen lost contact with me, and Wu Zui lost control over me as well. But when I reconnected with Gu Chen, Wu Zui regained control of my actions. I had previously thought it was Chen Bo who informed Liu, who then told Wu Zui. Now it seemed I had never suspected Gu Chen at all.
"Why did you do this? When did it start?" I asked Gu Chen, speaking each word carefully.
Gu Chen shook his head and replied, "Perhaps being a detective isn't suitable for me; perhaps I shouldn't have seen so much darkness. There is too much darkness in this world that leaves us powerless. Those criminals don't receive the punishment they deserve. Just look at the news reports: a man who kills his wife gets six years; someone who steals an electric bike gets four years. A person who disfigures another faces no consequences; children who commit murder don't bear criminal responsibility."
"This world has long been a filthy place. Only by breaking it down and rebuilding a new world can humanity be saved." Gu Chen's eyes were red; his voice was low but carried weight. "And we are just a step further than you."
I shook my head. "But you are killing people now—many people. And do you really think Wu Zui will help you? The world Wu Zui wants is one of slaughter; where is the order in that?"
"No," Gu Chen shook his head. "No matter when change occurs, there will always be bloodshed. Throughout history, every rebirth has come through blood and fire; every transformation has involved killing and death. This is an inevitable process. When the world descends into chaos and darkness, when everyone realizes that reform is necessary, rebirth begins."
"You've gone mad." I stared at Gu Chen, struggling to believe these words were coming from him.
Gu Chen stood up. "I'm not mad; I've always been moving toward this goal."
"Don't move," Liu said, pointing his gun at Gu Chen. "Don't think I won't pull the trigger. Once you allied with Wu Zui, you should have understood this day would come."
Gu Chen stood still without making any unnecessary movements. "Even without Wu Zui, I would have taken this step."
At that moment, Wu Zui finally spoke up: "That's right; everyone must take this step in their life. Once you cross that line, you'll realize this world is completely different. Gu Chen's choice isn't wrong; rebirth must accompany immense suffering, and the greater the pain, the more renewed the world will become."
"If at that time you hadn't let Gu Chen in but allowed someone else instead, the outcome would have been the same." Wu Zui licked his lips. "When you truly understand my thoughts, you'll see that everything makes perfect sense. Do you really know Gu Chen? Do you truly understand his background?"
Wu Zui shook his head. "You don't know; actually, Gu Chen has an older brother who shares no blood relation with him yet whom Gu Chen treats like his own brother. Before this, I only had a tiny clue; if Teacher Gao hadn't told me about it, perhaps we would never have known about this matter."
I knew that Teacher Gao had gone out on a rainy night, and it turned out he was indeed in contact with Wu Zui. Perhaps during the time I was unaware, Gu Chen and Teacher Gao had communicated. The words Teacher Gao said to me during the Suicide incident puzzled me, but now I finally understood.
Teacher Gao was wronged and had no way to defend himself. He might have hoped for a brand new world, one where he would not be wrongfully condemned to death.
Gu Chen nodded. "That's right, he was my neighbor. At that time, I was only twelve or thirteen years old. I was introverted and shy, not fond of talking. Besides being good at studying, I was thin and weak, knowing nothing at all. Our village had to go outside to attend school; my neighbor and I went to Middle School outside the village and could only return home once a month."
Gu Chen sneered. "Back then, all I knew was studying, and since I didn't like making friends, everyone isolated me. Because of one incident, I was cornered by a group of delinquents in the schoolyard. I even forgot what exactly happened; it seemed like I had asked a girl a question about studying, and one of the delinquents liked her."
"Perhaps to show off or to get the girl's attention, those people surrounded me after school. I was terrified and didn't know what to do. They hit me, cursed at me, and spat in my mouth to humiliate me; I had no way to fight back. At that moment, my brother came to rescue me."
"It was a tragic scene; heroes are always few in this world." Gu Chen's eyes glistened with tears. "He rushed into the crowd and fiercely attacked the leader. But soon, he was knocked down. Yet he didn't care about anything else; he bit down hard on the leader's arm."
"I lost track of how long they beat him." Gu Chen recalled. "All I knew was that the ground was covered in blood. Even after losing his teeth, he still held on tightly, refusing to let go. Those people were too busy with him; I ran out to tell the teacher. But when we got there, everyone had scattered, leaving only my brother lying on the ground."
"He passed away; we were from the same village, and he was just a year older than me—actually only a few months." Gu Chen rubbed his eyes. "Being older meant he had to take care of me. He promised my mother he would look after me, and he had to keep that promise. But then... he died."
Gu Chen snorted coldly. "Life can be so fragile sometimes; the Autopsy Report stated he died from severe head trauma. But there were over ten people involved in the fight at the scene; it’s unclear who killed my brother. At that time, I pointed out each of them one by one, but guess what? None of them were over fourteen years old. After being interrogated for a week, nothing happened to them; they just all transferred schools."
"Look at how interesting this is," Gu Chen said. "The reason they bullied others so recklessly is that they knew they wouldn't face any consequences. They understood there was nine years of compulsory education and knew they could go to school anywhere; they also knew that minors under fourteen wouldn't bear criminal responsibility—a clever bunch."
Gu Chen slowly stood up. "Back then, I was too young to remember their information. They might have moved to other cities; perhaps now they are husbands or Child's Fathers, maybe successful in their careers or doing good deeds now after being naive back then. But in my eyes, they will always be murderers."
His voice carried anger: "At that time, I was still too weak; I should have killed them all without leaving anyone behind. But since then, I've been training my body every day; I've grown stronger and no one dares bully me anymore. You see, in this world, it's always about whose fist is bigger that matters. I wanted to be a police officer; I wanted to catch all those bad people."
"But it's been over ten years now," Gu Chen walked towards Liu. "It's been over ten years—has anything really changed? Did Hu Ningning face any legal consequences for killing Gu Hui? Is it just like back then? After some time passes, her whole family moves away again; five or ten years later, everything seems as if it never happened at all. She might have gotten married and become a mother or even become a teacher."
"Is this fair?" Gu Chen questioned.
Wu Zui laughed softly. "This world has never been fair; ironically, people still try to cover it up and refuse to pull away this veil of shame. However, Gu Chen at least you don't need to worry—when we capture Wu Meng, Hu Ningning's family will have accidentally ingested rat poison and will reunite underground."
"You killed Hu Ningning's entire family?" I looked at Wu Zui in shock.
Wu Zui nodded. "Yeah, what's there to lie about? It's all for Wu Zui. You can raise a child like that; the parents have their responsibilities too."
"You're no different!" I shouted at Gu Chen. "Don't try to fool me, Wu Zui was just like Hu Ningning back then!"
Gu Chen shook his head. "Wu Meng, from the moment I walked in to rescue Liu Yinyan, there was no turning back. I know many people will die because of this, and that it might include many of our friends. But there's no way to go back now."
"Don't come any closer!" Liu shouted. "I'll shoot!"
Gu Chen stepped in front of Liu, pressing his chest against her gun, speaking slowly. "I thought you were like me, seeing through this world, but you're actually an undercover agent. Luckily, I never revealed my identity. Having come this far, my mission is already complete."
"Liu," Gu Chen took a deep breath. "You're smarter than Wu Meng, more patient than I am. Captain Shao really made the right choice with you. However, it seems he wasn't as strict with the selection for the armed police. My job has always been to capture people without showing my intellect, which is why I've been able to hide so deeply. Or maybe, in the Special Operations Group, I found my life's direction and understood why I'm alive."
Gu Chen's voice was calm. "Do you know why you're alive? What do you truly want? What does your heart desire?"
"Go ahead and shoot; I've already died a worthy death." Gu Chen closed his eyes.
Liu hesitated, unable to pull the trigger.
"Heart!"
