Xiao Ye trembled all over and exclaimed, "No, that's not it! I love Qi so much. How could I ever murder her?"
Dai Liu replied slowly, "Because you discovered that your wife was having an affair with another man, and she had already contemplated killing you. So you took advantage of the situation to kill her and frame both her and her lover, achieving two goals with one act."
Xiao Ye fell silent.
Dai Liu continued, "One thing I can be certain of is that you knew all along that Qi's sleepwalking was a ruse, and you had already anticipated that she would try to kill you. Therefore, you had prepared for it."
Xiao Ye remained quiet, but his gaze began to flicker.
"You didn't drink the water she gave you that was laced with sleeping pills. Instead, while making love to your wife, you found the opportunity to pour the water into her cup. As a result, after the act, she fell into a deep sleep due to exhaustion combined with the drug. Then you found that chef's knife in her room. However, since the sleeping pills had been diluted, she woke up shortly after. You took advantage of her moment of awakening and stabbed her to death. At that moment, the effects of the drug had mostly worn off, making it difficult for even an autopsy to detect anything unusual."
Dai Liu paused before continuing, "We all know that a knife piercing the heart doesn't cause instant death. But at that moment when Qi woke up, her body was still weak, which is why she couldn't get out of bed. Afterward, you placed the remaining half cup of drugged water on your bedside table and pretended to be asleep next to Qi."
Suddenly, Xiao Ye let out a cold laugh and mocked, "Officer, your imagination is quite rich. If you were to write this down, you'd surely succeed!"
Dai Liu ignored his scoff and pressed on. "Your plan was indeed clever and thorough. However, what you never anticipated was that the very evidence you left behind to clear your name would ultimately expose your scheme!"
Xiao Ye looked at Dai Liu, but the mocking smile on his face had vanished, replaced by astonishment.
Dai Liu continued, "First of all, there were only your fingerprints on that cup. Since you didn't drink from it, there are no lip prints on it either. This proves that you never drank from that cup at all. You took medication every night because you wanted Qi as well as Ling Yun and all of us to fall into your trap—believing that after taking the drug you'd be more prone to sleepwalking. Where did that half cup of water go? Can you explain? Second, after killing your wife, your pajamas were stained with blood. If you had just laid in bed waiting for Liang Miao to discover it, there would have been no flaws in your story. But you're just an ordinary person; I doubt you could manage lying next to your wife's corpse all night and only pretending to sleep again when dawn approached. The bloodstains on your pajamas are different from each other; we have verified this through technical analysis. If you were sleepwalking when you committed murder, how do you explain getting up after killing her and then lying back down in place while waiting for dawn?"
At this point, Dai Liu glanced at me again. I felt utterly ashamed; no matter how hard I tried, there were still oversights—quite a few!
Xiao Ye was now completely despondent; he seemed to have lost all strength.
"Dai Liu," he asked, "are you ready to reveal everything now?"
Xiao Ye remained silent for a long time before finally speaking up. "To be honest, I was skeptical about Qi's words from the very beginning, so I decided to test her on purpose. A few times, I pretended to be asleep. When Qi called me in the middle of the night, I didn't respond. Sure enough, the next morning she told me that I had been sleepwalking with a knife. The truth is, I was never actually asleep."
Xiao Ye continued, "When I went for treatment and overheard Qi talking to Ling Yun, my first reaction upon realizing their connection was to suspect that Qi wanted to kill me. She desperately urged me to take sleeping pills. When I found the knife under her bed that night, I knew she had made up her mind. So, I could only act first and used the method you just mentioned."
His face began to twist in anger as he spoke. "I loved her so much; we were together for so many years. I never expected she would betray me for a White Face. I'm truly unwilling to accept it! I hate it!"
"Xiao Ye, is there anything else you haven't disclosed?" Dai Liu interrupted him with a question.
Xiao Ye seemed lost in thought for a moment before replying, "No, that's all."
Watching Xiao Ye's back as he left, I pondered how such a deeply hidden and restrained man could run a successful business yet still fail to connect with his wife's heart.
After taking Xiao Ye out, I really wanted to ask Dai Liu how he figured out such a complicated relationship or noticed any clues. However, seeing Dai Liu lounging back with his legs crossed on the table, I held back my curiosity. Tentatively, I asked him, "Liu Team, are we concluding this case as Xiao Ye's intentional murder and Ling Yun's attempted murder?"
Dai Liu looked up from his cup of water and gazed at the ceiling. "Let's leave it at that; there's only so much we can do." His words were oddly vague.
Later, Xiao Ye was sentenced to death and executed immediately. Ling Yun's wife filed for divorce and demanded that he leave with nothing but the condition of hiring the best lawyer for his case. In the end, he was sentenced to five years for attempted murder.
After hearing Big Yellow's account, I remarked, "That Dai Liu is quite impressive. Why didn't you stay with him afterward?"
Big Yellow smiled wryly. "How could I? That case involving Yu—the Fat Cop you encountered—was him!"
I was taken aback; it seemed appearances could be deceiving. I had thought that hefty guy was just a bumbling fool! Suddenly, Big Yellow asked me, "Who do you think has deeper schemes between Xiao Ye and Ling Yun?"
“Honestly, I don’t know. I was thinking, how could Ling Yun, as a professional psychologist and such a cautious person, possibly make a mistake during the therapy process that allowed Xiao Ye to overhear his conversation with Qi? There’s only one possibility: he did it on purpose. After sending out the affair photos and seeing that Xiao Ye didn’t react, he had no choice but to use this method to further provoke him. He probably even pretended to be seduced by Qi to intensify the conflict between them, which is quite calculated.”
“As for Xiao Ye, he can be quite ruthless. Once he gets an idea in his head, he won’t hold back. I can’t imagine him spending a night with his wife’s corpse, even if they might not be on the same bed. So, between the two of you, I really can’t judge who is more formidable.”
We fell silent for a moment. I said to him, “Have you ever considered that there might be another possibility?” Big Yellow looked at me in surprise, and I smiled lightly. “I’m just throwing out an idea; it may not be true.” Big Yellow’s eyes sparkled with curiosity; I knew he was intrigued.
“Have you thought about Miao’s role in the whole incident?” Big Yellow’s eyes widened in shock.
I ignored him and continued, “Miao, I think she is crucial to the entire event. The knife that Qi hid belonged to her. With Qi dead and Xiao Ye sentenced to death, Miao stands to inherit Qi’s fortune and could get a large sum of money. According to your logic, the person who stands to gain the most is usually the prime suspect. I think Miao might have something to do with it. Oh, by the way, doesn’t Miao have Ling Yun’s number and call records on her phone? It’s possible that Miao has known Ling Yun for a long time.”
Once I opened my mind, more questions came to me. “Brother, my imagination is quite rich! I’m just guessing here. You see, Ling Yun was sentenced to five years, right? He’s a doctor with skills; if he performs well, he should be able to get a reduced sentence. After he gets out of prison, he could marry Miao, who just graduated from college. Doesn’t that mean he would gain both wealth and beauty?”
I continued without noticing Big Yellow’s increasingly pale face. “Ah, how could Miao know Ling Yun? Is it because Miao also has somnambulism? No wonder she doesn’t share a dorm with her university classmates and locks her door at home when she sleeps. If that’s true, I wonder if Qi and Xiao Ye know about this? Having two people in the house who sleepwalk is quite terrifying! No wonder Qi relied so much on psychologist Ling Yun. Actually, it would be easy to verify all this; just check if Ling Yun married Miao after getting out of prison.”
