My first piece was a necklace, and on the day it was launched, it sold out in just one minute.
On my desk lay the first jewelry sale receipt, a gift from Pei Li.
He said that even though I was the designer, I deserved a reward.
Pei Li asked me why the necklace was named Nian Li.
I ran my fingers over the necklace, thought for a moment, and told him, "Because at eighteen, Nian Li is the most beautiful age of life. I wanted to commemorate it with this name."
But I didn’t tell him that Nian means longing and Li refers to Pei Li's gift.
I had been basking in the glory of my first achievement, thinking I was a natural talent, until one day I overheard Pei Li talking to his friend outside the door.
The sound of papers being tossed on the table.
"Look for yourself, does this thing look well-designed?"
"It looks pretty good."
The man couldn't believe it: "You've changed; you really have changed. You can lie with your eyes wide open now. I heard you bought all the necklaces under the guise of a customer?"
Pei Li lazily flicked his lighter and lit the cigarette he had between his lips. "That’s true."
"You never make a losing deal. How could you lose so much this time?"
Pei Li chuckled lightly, seemingly unconcerned. "So what if I lost?"
"Several hundred million! So many gems!"
Pei Li shook off the ash from his cigarette. "As long as the young lady is happy."
The man wore a complex expression. "You weren't like this before. I haven't seen you treat anyone this way. Are you spoiling that girl from the Jiang family too much?"
Pei Li replied calmly, "She's just a young girl; she deserves some pampering."
The man couldn't believe it. "You can't be serious! But then again, that girl is quite pretty and she's of age now."
Pei Li's gaze narrowed slightly. "You're overthinking it. She's just a child from the Jiang family; it's only right for me to look after her."
The man nodded. "That's true. She's still so young. Even if you like her, you should probably like someone older."
Pei Li didn't refute him.
At first, I felt a flutter in my heart, thinking that this man was truly domineering, but with the last sentence, it felt like a bucket of cold water had been poured over me.
Although I had known all along that it was because of Uncle Jiang that he took care of me, hearing it confirmed still made me sad.
Fortunately, it was my last day at the the Pei; otherwise, I really wouldn't know how to face him. He never had any extra thoughts, while I was sinking deeper and deeper.
In our interactions, he was always the one who remained calm and composed.
It was time to wake up from this dream; it had lasted long enough.
As soon as I entered university, I ended up with a nominal boyfriend.
Yes, a nominal boyfriend. Because I had only met him once.
In the first week of school, a photo of a boy went viral on the campus forum, earning him the title of the aloof type.
On the playground, he walked straight up to me and blocked my path.
At that moment, I was sipping a drink through a straw.
"Is there something you need?"
Before he could respond, my sharp eyes caught sight of someone hiding behind a building, taking pictures.
I pointed, "Someone is photographing you; they might have captured me too."
He slowly pressed down on my outstretched finger and leaned closer. "Classmate, can you do me a favor?"
"What kind of favor?"
"Help me stir up a rumor."
I looked at him in confusion. "So that person taking pictures is...?"
He whispered to me, "Don't make a fuss; it's someone I hired."
"Why me?"
He looked serious. "Because you're the most attractive person in this department; it will feel more genuine that way."
He really... knows how to speak his mind.
The next day, rumors about me and him were flying everywhere.
Having agreed to help, I didn’t bother to clarify anything.
I never expected this news would reach my home.
Uncle Jiang served a chicken leg to both me and my mom, while giving Jiang Huai and Pei Li a chicken wing each. He took the chicken head for himself.
"Are you and Tian Tian dating? A friend of mine teaches at your school, and he mentioned it to me a few days ago."
I was surprised by how extensive Uncle Jiang's network was. Just as I was about to explain, I caught a glimpse of Pei Li's indifferent expression, and for some reason, I nodded.
Pei Li paused while serving herself, her eyes darkening. Just when I felt a bit smug, she calmly said, "Yeah, it's nice. At this age, it's just right for dating. As long as Xiao Tian likes it."
I almost choked on my food, silently shoveling rice into my mouth.
Suddenly, a sharp sound interrupted my thoughts.
I looked up to see Jiang Huai with a dark expression smashing his bowl. He shot me a glance before silently heading upstairs.
He didn’t come out of his room until late at night.
